Ellipsis does not recall, nor can Ampersand, when Elli arrived at the Wicke estate. Originally Elli resisted the slavery the Wicke family chained him to. Over time and with enough "conditioning", Elli became complacent and developed Stockholm's Syndrome.
Elli recalls that when it was time for Master Ampersand to be shipped off to the military something inside him hurt deeply. Master was the only one who treated him kindly; Elli would be sad without Master. In a moment of emotions Elli was unfamiliar with, he may or may not have caused the fire, with or without the intent to end his life because without Master there was no life. Elli's attempt or non-attempt, was thwarted when Master came to rescue him from the flames. Unfortunately Master collapsed just after getting Elli out the door. Thankfully Elli isn't small in stature. Elli scooped up Master and brought him to a safe place far, far from the estate. Elli walked until he was too exhausted to go further.
Eventually Master came too and Elli was excited. Master explained to Elli that he was not Master, but just Ampersand now. Ampersand released Elli from his slavery. Elli rejected this. Ampersand will always be Master. Elli follows Master everywhere.
Eventually they would meet Asterix and Alinea. When Master is near Asterix and laughing Elli gets jealous and has a tendency to interrupt at any given chance by offering tea. Sometimes it is good tea, other times it is tea made from whatever Elli finds lying around, and that is not always good. Elli looks up to Obelus and sees her as a teacher.
