Profile

Physical Appearance

  • Long black hair usually in a ponytail over left shoulder
  • Blue eyes
  • Tall in height
  • Physically fit with a decently muscled build
  • Light brown skin, although he usually has a thorough tan
  • Piercing in right ear
  • Gill slits in neck
  • Razor sharp teeth
  • Rough patches of skin on arms where fin ridges can grow out of

Clothing Style

Cornell tends to stay within the traditional pirate style, usually dressing in more extravagant or embellished "pirate lord" looking jackets and accessories. His favorite colors for his outfits are reds and blacks with gold and white accents. He has a rather large collection of coats and hats, most of which are over the top like his personality. However he doesn't wear these regularly and saves them for special occasions or for times when he just feels like being a little more ridiculous than usual. His most common outfit (and also his simplest outfit for day to day activities) includes a white shirt with a cross stitched collar and loose, long sleeves that tie off at the wrists; this is worn under a red jacket with a high collar and gold trim. He tends to wear black pants that are looser above the knee where it becomes form fitting around his shins to his ankles. He then wears knee high, black leather boots with gold embellishments. Quite often he wears whatever treasures he's stolen recently and is most proud of, especially any kinds of amulets or necklaces. The only time he doesn't wear something in this pirate style/theme is when he's home relaxing, and then he'll actually wear some more "modern" looking casual wear.

No matter what variation of outfit he may be wearing however, he will always wear a red scarf as a headband that also holds his ponytail in place. He also never takes off the gold medallion his mother gave to him and each of his other siblings, most often keeping it tucked under his shirt.

Personality

Cornell is an cheery and over-the-top pirate captain with all the energy to take on the oceans of Aaquanixie. He has a rather theatrical and over-dramatic personality, and most people who encounter him know him as loud, social, a little childish and a bit touchy-feely sometimes. Cornell is very much an extrovert and prefers to have some kind of contact with most people he's interacting with, either once during a conversation or throughout the whole interaction. Strangers usually get a handshake or something similar, acquaintances might get something more personal like a shoulder or arm touch, but people who are close with Cornell should expect a hug on sight and him being up in your personal bubble most of the time. He's capable of easing back on the personal-space-invasion though, but he might take a while to change his habits. For a pirate, he might seem a bit odd and too goofy, but he's the type that keeps a smile even when he's threatening someone. He acts by only his own whimsy, likes to take whatever he wants, and tends to take almost everything far too casually. He's capable of handling important responsibilities, but in general he can be rather irresponsible and unreliable for more minor matters. He seems to thoroughly enjoy his independence and doing whatever he wants, and anyone who tries to impede him is just a spoilsport or a party pooper.

Cornell is very confident in himself and doesn't seem to get embarrassed by anything, even his failures or mistakes; for this reason he's very affectionate and childish around his family even in public. He always seems to be rather loud and usually speaks his mind whenever he thinks of something, and he tends to overreact and exaggerate just to make things more interesting. This is obvious since he's a compulsive liar and tends to tell stories about ridiculous escapades that actually did happen but he adds the most unnecessary details to it to make it even more absurd, just because. As a pirate captain, he has a seemingly carefree demeanor but actually runs a pretty tight shift. He always seems to be cheery, but his crew has learned to never take this as him being light-hearted. He doesn't take insubordination and will cheerily shoot people that threaten mutiny in the face without hesitation. Only people that fit to his ship's needs and can work with his peculiar personality and methods will live in his crew. He may be friendly and reasonable sounding, but he and his pirate crew have no qualms about raiding and plundering towns. Most people who know him well also note that he can be rather absentminded and tends to forget things easily, but regardless of this he always puts passion into whatever goal he may be pursuing.

Abilities

  • Watyr rifting - rank 1/5
  • Skilled with firearms and swords (particularly pistols and cutlasses)
  • Underwater breathing and faster movement/mobility while swimming
  • Has the expected knowledge and skill set of a competent pirate captain (such as ship care/maintenance/supplying, navigation, giving orders, etc)
  • Skilled at singing, whistling, and dancing

Strengths

  • Confident, energetic, and optimistic
  • Uplifting, easy to talk to, and friendly
  • Creative, bold, and seemingly fearless
  • Despite his piracy, he can be very generous and compassionate to people who are less well off/struggling

Weaknesses

  • Immature, irresponsible, and a little too carefree
  • Compulsively steals and lies about the oddest things
  • Loud, a bit annoying at times, and sometimes too energetic
  • Although he can come through for important tasks, he's generally unreliable with smaller things and a bit forgetful/absentminded

Backstory

Cornell was the first child of the Shanks that gave his parents headaches trying to look after. Always full of energy and curious about everything, Cornell often got himself into trouble in and out of the house. He was fascinated with the vast ocean just outside their coastal home, and he dreamed of becoming a pirate and living a thrilling life of exploration and plundering. No one really took his fantasies seriously except for his older brother, Argent, during their late teen years when Cornell still talked about it as his goal. Most of them would've said that Cornell was too flighty and friendly to handle such a lifestyle, and although very close with his mother, she'd often scold him for his reckless behavior. Cornell was also very injury prone during his childhood (and still is to a degree), and he grew rather close to Cyan and gave her plenty of practice for her medical dreams.

After Argent left home to enlist in the Marshal Guard, Cornell purchased a ship with his saved up allowances from his parents and also some riches he "acquired." He named the vessel the Ragnarok in honor of his deceased father. Over the years, Cornell hired numerous crew members until he finally found a bunch that would put up with his eccentric personality and remain loyal to him. Although he gained a reputation as a notorious pirate captain of Aaquanixie, Cornell never stole from his home region and tended to steal from other pirates and criminals instead to indirectly help out Argent and the Marshal Guard.

Currently Cornell continues to terrorize the distant seas of Aaquanixie, regularly returning to his home region to visit his family and give back to his community through his collected riches. He often visits his younger brother, Shrike, and provides him rides back home when he needs them, and he also regularly encounters Argent on the seas, somehow avoiding getting in trouble with the law.

Trivia:

  • Cornell's name was chosen along with Argent's and Cyan's as a small batch of siblings named after certain shades of colors. Cornell is a particular shade of red, which is why his design usually has him wearing red. His name is also slightly inspired by the Castlevania character of the same name, even though they pretty much have nothing to do with each other; I just thought the name was cool and it fitted the color theme I was going with.
  • His favorite gun is a blunderbuss named "Forgiveness." Never beg him for Forgiveness, because he will give it to you.
    • His second favorite gun (and most frequently used one) is a pistol called "Mercy." Don't beg for that either.
    • Actually, never beg Cornell for anything, because chances are he has a gun named after whatever you're asking for. He has a lot of guns.
  • Cornell has no issue with stealing or killing, but he better not catch any of his crew trying to take advantage of any vulnerable women (or men too, I suppose) during any of their raids. Cornell is a bit of a romantic, and along with his close relationship with his mother and knowledge of the struggles she faced with her family abusing her, he does not tolerate this sort of scummy activity among his crew.
    • Cornell himself has seduced a number of women in the past, but it's mostly so he can rob them easily, and he can obviously stop being childish long enough to take on a charming and suave demeanor to deceive others. He doubts he'll ever commit to any sort of romantic relationship, but that doesn't mean he won't treat a woman well before he does the stealing.
    • He doesn't mind flirting with ladies even if he doesn't intend to rob them, and he also doesn't mind if other people flirt with him first. Even sexual advances that are unwanted don't typically throw him off, regardless if they're a woman, man, or something else, and he tends to take it with humor since it provides him a nice story to tell later. However, this by no means implies he's easy to win over and he's likely to shoot someone in the face if they don't take a hint to back off quickly enough.
    • His crewman, Alberto, is convinced that Cornell might consider a physical relationship with a man. Cornell at least hasn’t given any indication that he’s opposed to the idea, which is mostly Alberto trying to keep his own hopes up.
  • In general, Cornell acts rather immature around his family regardless if there are others around. He has no issue with discarding his semi-mature demeanor he uses in public when with his family, and he really doesn't care what anyone thinks of him.
    • He cares if his family approves of him though, but only for serious topics, so he doesn't care if they find him weird or annoying sometimes.
    • He acknowledges the rest of his family knows him as the loud and troublesome one who's always getting himself injured somehow, and he tends to purposely tease his younger siblings in a pseudo-coddling manner imitating their doting mother and play as an annoying younger brother to his older siblings.
  • Cornell absolutely loves giving and getting hugs, and he pretty much greets everyone he's fond of with a hug.
  • Anyone unfortunate enough to have to share a bed with him in a non-sexual manner will most likely be mercilessly "power-snuggled," which Cornell apparently does without any knowledge of it while asleep. Argent knows this very well since they used to have to share a bed as children before their home was renovated enough for them to all have their own rooms.
    • Cornell tends to suggest his siblings are overexaggerating how terrible it is to sleep next to him, but Argent has cited that Cornell actually cuddled him so hard once that he broke one of his ribs.
    • Cornell also claims none of the women he's encountered have mentioned anything about such behavior, so it's likely that he is only this relentlessly cuddly with his siblings, since they're the only other people he's ever had to share a bed with before and he has no other test cases to base it off of.
    • Joy has noted that Cornell does tend to cuddle and not let go when he falls asleep, or at least he has ever since he was a child, so it’s likely he is just continuing that habit. She doesn’t think he cuddled unbearably hard though. Mama might just be too tough to notice.
  • Cornell is horrendously allergic to starfruit and has to be constantly reminded not to have any because he keeps forgetting about his allergy entirely.
    • His family and even his crew know about this and often have to make sure he doesn't accidentally kill himself by eating something he shouldn't.
  • Unlike many of his siblings, Cornell does not seem to have inherited much or any of his father's demonic traits or tendencies. For this reason, Cornell isn't particularly affected by any sort of demonic aura, but he also doesn't have quite the same superhuman physical capabilities or accelerated regeneration that some of his family members have. He's a bit stronger than normal due to some small amount of demonic aura he might have, but otherwise he's about normal for a mortal, meaning he can't survive certain would-be fatal injuries that some of his other siblings could handle.
  • Joy would say that although their personalities were completely different, she thinks that Cornell looks very much like his father. Aside from his blue eyes that he got from Joy, his skin tone and hair are almost identical to his father's, and Cornell even styles his hair more similarly to Ragnarok than any of his other siblings, which is probably the reason why it stands out so much to Joy.
  • Cornell doesn't always get to see them all that frequently since they all have their own lives, but he is very fond of all his family members.
    • He is very fond of his mother and could be described as somewhat of a "momma's boy" except for the fact he's always been rather independent. He just loves being in her company and doing things with his mother, and he always loves to bring her treasures from his adventures and make her happy.
      • One of their unique bonding experiences while he was growing up was singing together. None of Joy's other children (except for Fathom, who was estranged for years) had much musical inclination or interest, but both she and Cornell enjoy singing and would often do so together while doing various tasks around the house or on the beach.
      • One particular thing they often do when Cornell is at home is singing quiet songs while Joy plays with his hair, usually trying out fancy braids with him. Cornell is also rather skilled at doing her hair too, and he sometimes braids the hair of any crew members of his that will put up with it.
      • Cornell still enjoys singing and tends to do so while at sea, usually leading his crew in shanties, but sometimes he will sing on his own.
    • Although Cornell knows he probably gets on Lancer's nerves a lot, he does love and look up to his older brother a lot and thinks he's really the epitome of cool. He'd say that Lancer is the ideal he'd want to be if he was capable of being remotely serious.
      • Lancer telling him that he thinks Cornell is much more skilled and precise with firearms than he is was probably the best compliment Cornell has ever gotten from him. It essentially blew his mind that his older brother has any sort of admiration of him.
    • Cornell gets along very well with Marquis since their personalities are rather similar in terms of how friendly and cheerful they tend to be, although Cornell readily admits he's way more energetic and chaotic.
    • Considering Cyan was always the one to patch him up when he would inevitably hurt himself doing reckless things as a child, Cornell is very close with his older sister. He still manages to get himself into a lot of trouble and hurt even to the present, and she's always ready to take care of him all the same.
    • Cornell is extremely close with his older brother, Argent, and the two are best friends despite their very different choice of occupation and personalities. Cornell is especially childish and over the top when around Argent, whom he thinks the world of, and he refers to Argent as his best friend.
      • Even though Cornell is generally an open book, he would say that Argent is definitely his go-to person that he can tell anything, aside from probably his mother.
    • Since Cornell is always the one to give Shrike rides back home from his island, the two are very close even though their personalities are very different and they don't have that much in common. Shrike is typically pretty minimal about how much he interacts with others, including his own family, but the two have spent so much time together that Shrike no longer feels uncomfortable spending extended periods of time with Cornell. That doesn't mean that Cornell can't still exhaust him with his endless energy and chattiness, but Cornell has gotten better about mellowing out for Shrike's sake when he's around.
    • He wouldn't say that he is especially close with Turul and Tilia since they probably spend the least amount of time with him compared to most of his other siblings, but Cornell still loves and gets along well with them. Turul might say that Cornell is a little too chatty sometimes, but they don't argue about anything and like each other. Tilia is a little easier for Cornell to tease, and their energies can usually get a little out of control sometimes, but they certainly don't dislike each other even if Tilia gets hotheaded about his endless cheer.
    • He and Freyr get along very well since they are both very cheery and chatty, the only major difference being that Cornell is capable of being aggressive. The two can rambling on with each other for hours, and they both love doing whatever is needed to make their mother happy. Freyr always seems to be the most receptive to Cornell's often-ridiculous stories about his adventures at sea.
    • Cornell and Shakuru are pretty close even if they don't necessarily get into long conversations with each other. Cornell tends to bring him back any interesting ocean-related souvenirs while at sea, usually things like shells or fossils from other regions for Shakuru to examine or collect. Shakuru doesn't seem to get as annoyed with Cornell's overactive energy since he's already used to Freyr.
    • Since Fathom was estranged from the family, Cornell isn't very close with him, although he's eager to get to know Fathom better once the family reconciles with him. The two don't have a lot in common in terms of personality, but Cornell is very excited about Fathom being the only other musically inclined sibling out of all of them, so he's hoping this will be a good avenue to attempt bonding with him.
  • Cornell really isn't fond of formalities or formal events, although he does appreciate certain formal events for the aesthetic (and also the abundance of expensive things to potentially steal).
  • Hates doing paperwork and can't remember any of his important personal information to save his life. He can't even remember his own address, but that doesn't mean he doesn't know how to navigate well even without remembering specifics.
    • Once had Argent fill out some medical paperwork for him because he couldn't remember half the information required on it.
    • Has trouble remembering his own birthday, but he considers it a plus because every birthday is a surprise party when you never remember it.
  • He also hates stairs. Everything needs to either be on the ground floor, have ramps, or have an elevator, otherwise he'll whine about it.
    • Once had Argent carry him up a flight of stairs, both because he was too lazy to climb them himself and also because he had recently gotten out of the hospital and his legs were still recovering from bullet wounds/surgery. But it was mostly because he was lazy and Argent didn't want to deal with him whining.
  • His favorite foods are, predictably, mostly seafood. His favorite kind in particular is crab meat, especially crab legs. He has a lot of fun with having to put in the effort to crack them open himself.
  • When nervous, he tends to rock or bounce on his heels. He also will play with his hair and tends to move around a lot in general.
  • Has a particular crew member on his ship that Cornell frequently shoots in the face. It never kills him, and his face is just so dang shootable.
  • He has no issue with gambling, but typically he only gambles with people he could get away with shooting if he happens to lose to them. He readily admits he's a pretty sore loser, but he usually keeps his cool about it; you know, aside from the murder part.
  • Although Cornell loves riches and treasure, he tends to collect money more than he actually spends it. He just enjoys getting things on his own rather than buying stuff, and he regularly donates his excess wealth to the community or charities in his hometown. He also pays his crew very well since he doesn't really need the money himself considering how rich his family is.
  • He is extremely ticklish and laughs very easily in general.
  • He doesn't really have much of a "pirate accent," although he has picked up a little of his crew members' dialects and speech habits just from being around them so often.
  • Cornell has a pretty wide vocal range, both for speaking and singing. His voice is usually a little higher pitched when he's being silly or is excited, and he only typically uses his lower range for either singing or if he's acting charming/charismatic to trick someone, usually in a flirtatious manner. When speaking to him in normal conversation, his has a rather mid-range voice that frequently goes a bit higher since he's easily excitable.
  • A requirement of his pirate crew is that you have to be skilled or willing to learn to sing or play an instrument, since Cornell really loves his music. The ship is usually pretty musical, either with intentional performances or just people belting out shanties while going about their work.
  • Cornell's musical tastes are pretty split in half by what he likes. He loves the traditional "pirate shanty" or folk music of his home region, but he also likes modern music as well, particularly high energy dance music. He has a habit of blasting this kind of music on speakers when his crew is doing a raid, which kinda makes the mood weird. He's generally very dance-y during pirate raids.
  • Old Charahub blurb: "The fifth of the Shank siblings, he sails the Aaquanixie seas taking whatever catches his eye and enjoying life to the fullest."
