Clothing Style

Shakuru tends to dress in whatever works best with warm, outdoor weather, especially clothing good for swimming. He rarely dresses formally and prefers mobility and functionality over aesthetic. He also doesn't tend to wear many accessories, although he does make quite a few out of shells, teeth, or other things he finds underwater or on the beach. He more commonly gives them to other people, usually his mother, although he'll wear them sometimes. His go-to clothing color seems to be black, and it's rare to see him wearing any outfit that isn't dominated by darker colors. Shakuru usually wears contacts to correct his near-sightedness, although sometimes when at home he'll just wear his glasses for reading (and Freyr describes them as hipster glasses, which Shakuru doesn't particularly appreciate).

His most common outfit consists of a waterproof sleeveless top over a skin tight waterproof turtleneck long sleeved shirt with armbands at elbows and wrists. When swimming he always pulls his collar down lower around his neck so it doesn't cover his gills. He also wears loose knee length shorts or black waterproof pants depending on the weather or how much he wants to protect his skin, or he might wear more form-fitting waterproof shorts under regular pants or jeans. He either wears waterproof boots when out and about or no shoes at all, and he cannot stand sandals or flip flops for some reason. He rarely goes anywhere without his gold family medallion and his purple scarf, usually worn around his waist.

Personality

Shakuru is a rather quiet and aloof young man who tends to be rather secretive and moody. He comes off as rather sarcastic or snarky to people who interact with him initially, and he tends to be very blunt with his words and opinions. He prefers to be in control of whatever situation he's put in and gets antsy easily when he can't handle things himself. Around his family he's perfectly content being a follower, but around strangers he becomes uncooperative with others who tell him what to do. He prefers to have extended periods of time to himself and only enjoys socializing in relatively short bursts. He can usually be irritable, especially when people intrude on personal time and space, and can also quickly resort to violence when he doesn't like how someone is treating him. Even little things can set him off, but he doesn't like being stressed out and regularly meditates to work on his temper issues. He can swing from being very zen to pissed off rather easily, which is something he's trying to work on. His difficulty with leveling his emotional instabilities may stem from mild mental issues he likely inherited from his father, a trait that a handful of his other siblings display and sometimes struggle with. He does his best to keep his aggressive impulses down and maintain control, but as much as he denies it, he is a little sadistic sometimes and does enjoy injuring people that annoy him.

Shakuru has a healthy curiosity about the world and enjoys seeing or learning new things, but he's not that nosy about other people are rarely takes interest in peoples' personal drama. He can be more sympathetic with his family, but to others he's not a good person to vent to since he probably couldn't care less about other people's problems. He enjoys spending time on the beach or in the ocean and has a love for aquatic environments and wildlife, which is apparent in his line of work as a marine biologist. Since his family is so rich, he doesn't necessarily need to work that hard to provide for himself, yet he still works with the city's local university, particularly in field assignments for evaluating the wildlife or environmental conditions.

Shakuru also tends to keep his personal problems and interests mostly to himself. The only person he opens up to regularly is his older brother, Freyr, but only if he bothers him enough and badgers him into talking about it. He feels that opening up about his feelings is a vulnerability, so he avoids it as much as possible since he hates feeling vulnerable or being forced into a submissive position and will violently force his way back out of it if need be. He gets very upset if people even get glimpses into his very personal life, and he can get rather emotional and usually aggressive if people try to approach him in this state. He especially keeps his love life private and gets peeved when anyone, including his own partner, talks about it. He tends to mellow out around his current love interest and is capable of being affectionate if given enough time to warm up to them, but they should never try to dominate him or ignore when he tells them not to cross certain boundaries, otherwise he'll introduce his fist to your gut. As long as his boundaries are respected, Shakuru is relatively easy to get along with once he's already warmed up to you.

Backstory

Shakuru was the youngest child of the Shanks until Fathom was born five years later, and he was always babied by his mother. Due to this he grew very close to her and tended to follow her about often, especially to the beach. However unlike a handful of his other brothers, Shakuru soon outgrew his dependence and became rather adventurous, especially about the waters of their coastline home. He was very curious about the marine life and ended up retaining this interest and making it into his career field in the present day. He enjoyed the alone time his exploration of the bay gave him, and he typically used this as his method to get out of the house for some quiet and to avoid encountering his father too often, whom he always had a fear of.

Shakuru had always been very close with his older brother, Freyr, and the two would often get into trouble together in their younger years. Eventually Shakuru outgrew the trouble-making and would instead chastise his older brother for his mischief, something Freyr would use to point out Shakuru was missing out on enjoying his childhood, which Shakuru never agreed with until his late teen years. Watching his older siblings mature ahead of him caused Shakuru to mature early on, especially during the period of time shortly after Fathom ran away. Shakuru was never particularly affected by his father's death, but he was deeply stricken by the depression his mother fell into afterwards. Because of this, he opted to remain living at home to help maintain the house with Freyr while finding his career in the localized area at the city university so their mother wouldn't feel as alone with so many of her children growing up.

He continues his life and career around home, keeping his mother's spirits up while helping Freyr with the house's general upkeep. In recent years, he's experimented with some romantic relationships, and for a while he was content in a rather secretive relationship with a man named Phillip Vale. However, they've recently broken up after Shakuru got fed up with Phillip's inability to respect his boundaries. Shakuru still has some feelings for him, but he also irritated that Phillip isn't taking the breakup well and won't leave him alone, which is giving him unhealthy amounts of stress.

Trivia:

  • Shakuru's name was based off a Native American (specifically Pawnee, I think) goddess of the sun.
    • If you mention to him that he has a "girl's name," he'll likely respond, "No I don't, I have a goddess's name." Of course, he probably wouldn't even know the meaning behind the name since he's not even from the right planet, but let's not get too technical about it.
    • Him having a more feminine-coded name partially played into his design development of making him look a bit more pretty/androgynous looking.
  • It's well know that he has a mean right hook, but honestly his left hook is just as mean.
  • It's obvious that Shakuru hates pollution, wastefulness, and ignorance in general, and he can be very harsh to anyone who disregards nature or is generally stupid and gets on his nerves.
  • Although he never likes admitting it, Shakuru isn't fond of machinery much. He's fine with technology in general, but he can't stand machines with visible moving parts like gears or pistons, especially if they're large and make a lot of noise.
    • He had a close call in his childhood where he was almost killed by heavy machinery, so he avoids it like the plague and may have a panic attack if he's forced into close proximity without any means of getting himself away.
  • Shakuru enjoys collecting shells and other finds from the ocean, and he's also rather skilled at making jewelry/accessories out of them. He typically doesn't wear them himself though and tends to gift them to other people, usually his mother.
    • He also particularly enjoys collecting fish skeletons or various aquatic fossils, although he typically just displays them in his room. He obviously never takes anything that is still alive.
  • Along with regularly meditating, Shakuru tends to work out a lot and do things like yoga or Pilates (although the specifics are probably a little different). And since he does a lot of swimming, he winds up being very strong despite not being bulky. He's also very flexible and steady with his movements.
  • He enjoys reading as an idle activity, and he tends to either read various research related books or studies involving his marine biology work or horror books when reading fiction.
  • Quite obviously since he is a shark and lives near the ocean, he loves all kinds of seafood.
  • Not very ticklish in general, and if you try to tickle him he'll probably punch you.
  • Usually dominant in his relationships, especially in the bedroom. If you try to get him to be submissive, he'll either leave or punch you out if you are too pushy with him.
    • This is the primary reason why he broke up with Phillip, because neither of them were willing to compromise on the topic, and instead of accepting it gracefully and cleanly seeking other options, Phillip insisted that things would work out if Shakuru just saw things his way. Pfft, yeah right.
  • He typically doesn't do much to style his hair aside from keeping up with his usual undercut. He will sometimes tie it back in a side ponytail or bun when he needs it out of the way.
    • He also lets his mother play with his hair, usually braiding it, when she wants to spend some personal time with him.
  • He'd say he should never be talked to before he's had his coffee, but he's grumpy even after he'd had it.
  • There's a particular octopus that apparently lives in the waters near his home, and this octopus frequently sticks to him when he goes out swimming. Shakuru has had to ask Cyan to help him remove it from his body several times already, since it usually refuses to let go even when he leaves the water.
  • Shakuru definitely wouldn't describe himself as an affectionate person, but he does try to keep a good relationship with each of his family members regardless.
    • He and his mother, Joy, are very close since Shakuru still lives at the family home and they see each other regularly. Shakuru was pretty clingy with her as a child, but he hit a prickly phase during his teen years where he got irritable with her constant doting and treating him (and all his siblings for that matter) like a precious baby. Shakuru in general is still rather prickly, but he has definitely mellowed out as an adult and no longer becomes annoyed at his mother's affections. They certainly share a love for the sea and regularly go out to the beach together.
    • Shakuru would not say that he was close with his father at all, and he isn't proud to admit it, but he didn't feel that sad when he died either. Shakuru was 13 years old and already strong into his "rebellious and moody teen" phase, so he wasn't particularly affected by his father's death since he never felt close or even loved by him to begin with. Shakuru has mellowed out on this view over time though, and he obviously doesn't like how Ragnarok's death so deeply affected Joy by sending her into a deep depression. He still wouldn't say he particularly loves his father though.
    • He and Lancer see each other somewhat regularly when he returns home weekly, and even though they don't usually seek out personal time with each other, they are relatively close and are fine being around each other. Shakuru doesn't admit it much, but he looks up to and admires Lancer a lot. Lancer isn't a particularly affectionate older brother in any sense, but he is certainly protective of Shakuru since he's pretty much the baby of the family.
    • Marquis has a good relationship with all of his siblings, and Shakuru is no exception. Shakuru tends to act the most irritable about Marquis's doting nature in a similar manner to how he used to act toward his mother's doting, but it's nothing that deep or serious. He's aware that Marquis tends to exaggerate his affection toward his younger siblings in somewhat of a parody of their mother's constant babying, so Shakuru tends to exaggerate how annoyed he gets by it in turn. Marquis especially likes to relentlessly offer him silly children's bandages for all his booboos, particularly ones with fish and ocean themes just because of Shakuru's profession.
    • He and Cyan tend to see each other rather frequently and get along very well. They tend to have rather long conversations with each other about complicated topics, and Cyan will sometimes tease him with that familiar doting nature that Joy and Marquis tend to have. She will sometimes get on his case about frequently winding up in the hospital with various work-related injuries or "inconveniences" like the previously mentioned octopus. Shakuru tends to just shrug it off as usual.
    • Due to Argent's busy schedule, he and Shakuru don't always see much of each other, but they do get along and often talk about the ocean together. Shakuru is always interested to hear about the places Argent goes for work, and he considers Argent to be the most sensible and reliable sibling to go to for clear-cut advice. This is mostly because Argent is the one of the few older siblings he has that doesn't relentlessly dote on him as the baby of the family, and he's usually easier to approach than Lancer.
    • Shakuru considers Cornell to be an almost worse version than Freyr, because he is just as chatty and Cornell is way more chaotic. Even though he would describe Cornell as annoying, they honestly get along rather well. Even though Freyr is Shakuru's best friend, he would say that Cornell is a little more relatable in the sense that Cornell can actually resort to violence when irritated, whereas Freyr would never. Shakuru can't help but respect the fact that Cornell never hesitates to shoot when crossed.
    • Even though Shrike is rarely at the family home and they don't interact much, he and Shakuru get along very well and often talk to each other about animals. Obviously their areas of expertise are very different, with Shrike specializing in birds and Shakuru focusing on marine life, but they still appreciate each others interests and can relate to each other on that level better than any of their other siblings. They usually end up having long conversations about animal biology and behavior, and Shakuru admires how blunt and honest Shrike always is.
    • He and Turul don't usually talk a lot, but they get along well. They usually exchange techniques for managing stress and anger, since both of them tend to struggle with controlling their aggression due to their demonic auras. Shakuru has a firm respect for Turul's ability to keep a cool head, either by keeping his aggression in check or by maintaining a level head when he does resort to violence. Shakuru's not entirely sure how he does it and is trying to crack the mystery, since he tends to struggle to maintain control and defuse once his anger flares up.
    • Shakuru would say he probably gets along with Tilia the least out of their siblings, but that doesn't mean they dislike each other. Shakuru finds her annoyingly chatty like Freyr and Cornell, and he doesn't know how to feel about how unabashed she is about letting her violent tendencies run wild. He would never admit it, but he's likely envious that she can get away with it so well. Instead he considers her irritating since she doesn't even try to show some self control, which is something he often struggles with.
    • Shakuru would say that Freyr is the most annoying and insufferable of all his siblings, but they're also best friends and the closest out of any of them as well. They spend the most time together since they are the only siblings that still live at home with Joy, and Shakuru pretends that spending so much time with his brother is driving him absolutely crazy. Freyr is too chatty, always so sickeningly sweet, constantly annoying him with practical jokes and pranks around the house, relentless about making him try all his new recipes in the kitchen, and completely nauseating about all his romantic/sexual ventures that he never seems to learn from. But boy would Shakuru hate spending a day away from him.
    • Since Fathom was estranged from the family for so long, Shakuru can't say that they are close in any sense. Shakuru didn't particularly like Fathom when he still lived with the family, probably out of jealousy for stealing away the position of being the baby of the family, but over time he let that childish view go and started feeling sympathy for his younger brother getting unfairly chased out of the family. After Fathom reconciles with the family and is able to interact with them again, Shakuru doesn't initially make much effort to reconnect with him since he's not particularly affectionate or sociable in general. This somewhat changes when Fathom brings Shakuru a gift of some shells from Taliac to replace a shell from Shakuru's collection that he accidentally broke when he was a child, and he apparently assumed that he still needed to be forgiven for that. Shakuru is touched that Fathom even remembered that, since he sure didn't, and he does try to be nicer to Fathom in general when he realizes how awkward he feels trying to reintegrate into the family.
  • Old Charahub blurb: "The youngest of the Shanks that is still welcome in the family, he carries out his life exploring the undersea while keeping tabs on his mother and older brother."
