Profile

Physical Appearance

  • Medium-length blond hair; grows it out longer further into the series before cutting it short again later
  • Almost always wears a red backwards ball cap
  • Blue eyes
  • Fair skinned with a tan
  • Physically fit with a somewhat scrappy but athletic build
  • Medium height
  • After being corrupted by the Varling spirit, he has pointed ears
  • Has a Varling form that he is unable to use/is unaware of (design pending)
  • At some point a rabbit spirit forces the corruption out of him and he has rabbit ears instead
  • After this point he has a gray rabbit form, first with some black corruption spots, but later no spots after fully purified (see refs)

Clothing Style

Mark always dresses very casually in clothes that does not hinder his mobility. He sometimes seems to only own jeans and t-shirts, and he's almost never seen without his red ball cap. He also wears sporty clothing and his soccer uniform. The type of shirts he wears vary greatly, from being extremely simple to being utterly ridiculous and over the top like his demeanor. He doesn't care much for dark or gloomy designs though., and he prefers warmer colors and tends to mix any dark colors he wears with some contrasting accent colors.

His most common outfit consists of jeans, running shoes, his red ball cap, and some kind of t-shirt. He also frequently wraps his forearms in bandages to add a little extra padding to them similarly to why Marcie wraps up one of her knees.

Personality

Mark is a positive and energetic prankster who rarely thinks before he acts. He holds himself with confidence and is known to be rather snarky, immature, and a bit theatrical at times. He tends to be lazy with his responsibilities if they don't particularly interest him, although he is capable of being reliable for important things or things that involve soccer. Otherwise he usually procrastinates and goofs off, since he rarely does anything if he can't have fun doing it. He tends to make a joke out of almost everything and usually has a smile or smirk on his face, and he can be a bit cocky and annoying at times. His curiosity also tends to get him into trouble since he doesn't really think about the consequences of his actions too often unless it's obvious they're going to cause something severely negative to someone he cares about. He tends to tease and pester his twin sister, but he's always there for her and doesn't tolerate anyone else pushing her buttons. He's also always aware of her limits, so he never tries to cross the line and more often than not tries to convince her to loosen up and join his antics. Marcie tends to provide some logic and sensibility to him since he doesn't think ahead much, and he knows she's usually the one to get them out of trouble.

In most cases, Mark comes off as energized and fearless, and while he's not afraid to push boundaries and take risks, he does tend to freeze or panic under extreme pressure when situations are legitimately dangerous or serious. It's very easy to tell when something is bothering him since he gets unusually quiet and sheepish, and he's terrible at lying about it or keeping it inconspicuous. He's excellent at lying about his pranks and playing it cool for more trivial matters, but heavy subjects that weigh on him tend to throw him off a lot. He also doesn't really like talking about things that bother him either since he feels like acknowledging his problems will just make things worse. If his family is in trouble or in need though, he won't let his fears or insecurities get in his way, and despite the fact that he's not a confrontational person in general (which is why he tends to stay away from combat more often than any of his allies) he is brave enough to put himself in the line of fire if it means protecting those he cares about, especially his siblings.

Abilities

  • Lytenin rifting - rank 2/5
  • Shapeshifting - Varling (can neither consciously change into this form nor control himself while in this form)
  • Shapeshifting - rabbit (only after the Varling spirit is removed from him)
  • Skilled at playing soccer
  • Proficient at playing guitar, gets better as he gets older and has more practice

Strengths

  • Energetic, optimistic, and headstrong
  • Confident, quick witted, and instinctive
  • Curious, loves trying new things, and works well in groups/social situations
  • Loyal, supportive, and easy to approach

Weaknesses

  • Reckless, a bit cocky, and doesn't take things seriously too often
  • Does poorly under pressure except for when playing soccer
  • Usually doesn't let negativity get to him, but gets very despondent when he can't figure something important out/is made to feel stupid
  • Irresponsible, lazy, and tends to shirk his work to have fun instead

Backstory

Mark and his twin sister, Marcie, grew up with their single mother after their father left long before they were born. They were never very social or polite to other kids their age since they mostly clung to each other, and they were often picked on by older kids. Their mother decided they might benefit from another member in the family to socialize them better, so they agreed on adopting an older sibling for them. Mark and his sister grew fond of an older boy, reluctantly named Luke, while visiting a city orphanage, and their family ended up adopting him. They befriended him quickly, and they gradually warmed up to interacting with other kids as the years passed. Mark later joined a soccer league and became well socialized, and he has a class clown reputation in school. He tends to shirk his work and get his sister to cover for him.

When he was 14, Luke was threatened by a foreign terror group called the Enlightened, and Mark unexpectedly gets caught up in the trials of his brother's destiny when they are whisked away to the foreign world of Doobutsu Tenshi. It was here that he was "blessed" by a Varling spirit, but he is unable to tap into its dangerous powers and is mostly unaware of it. He also gained power over electricity from Karinaga, the son of the Lytenin' channeler, Althius. Since then, Mark has been practicing (mostly messing around with) his rifting skills so he can better help his brother fight against whatever the Enlightened throws their way.

Trivia:

  • Spirit Anima and its main cast were inspired by playing with a collection of bouncy balls in a dark closet when I was in 3rd grade. Don't ask.
  • Mark’s design is very much based on that typical 90s boy look with the backwards ball-cap. I’m pretty sure a lot of those stereotypical characters also have blond hair and red shirts too.
  • Referred to as "Animato" by his eccentric music teacher because he's very lively.
  • Has played soccer since he was a small child, and he's always been rather skilled at it.
  • Loves water, whether it be rain, pool water, the ocean, sprinkles in summer, water balloons, or even a car wash.
    • At least once per summer, Delyless usually takes one of her convertibles through a car wash and tips the assistants into turning off the soap so it's basically a weird water ride. This is always the highlight of summer for Mark.
  • Known as a prankster and a very overdramatic slacker at school.
  • Usually gets Marcie to either help him with his homework or do it entirely for him. They usually have little competitions to determine how it goes.
  • Hates the cold, so much that his ever-cheery mood will sour very quickly if it's cold enough to make him shiver.
  • His favorite color is blue.
  • His favorite animals are kangaroos.
  • Was almost changed from a rabbit person to a kangaroo person because I thought him trying to fight as a rabbit would be silly. Then I accepted the silliness.
  • Horrible at flirting and he never tries it.
  • Has a hard time sitting still, and when nervous or antsy he tends to jitter, pace, or bounce in place.
  • Originally Althius was going to be more of an antagonist toward Mark with Karinaga trying to be more helpful and keep them away from each other. This idea was obviously scrapped.
  • There's a weird rabbit that likes to follow Mark around while he's practicing soccer in his backyard, and no matter how he tries to chase it off it never leaves. Even when he accidentally hits it with the ball, because it likes to get in his way, it won't clear out. He's not sure what to do about the poor little dumb thing.
  • Old Charahub blurb: "The twin brother of Marcie, he has unknowingly acquired the power of a mysterious enemy that may threaten him and his loved ones."
