Clothing Style

Addle is rarely seen out of his knight armor since he's technically always on duty. His uniform consists of some kind of black somewhat-skintight underlayer top, often long sleeved, although he does have a sleeveless version for hotter seasons, along with black pants/leggings. Over that is reddish-black leather armor, particularly for his chest/abdominal area and legs, and on top of that is red durable cloth armor with black straps and some silver plated crystal armor guards for various joints (shoulders, elbows, hips, knees, etc). The sleeves of his cloth top have black cuffs, and he wears red and silver gauntlets under the sleeves along with black fingerless gloves underneath. His leg armor is also red, but it is made of light leather like his under-layer for better leg protection along with the silver shin guards and plating on the toes/bottoms of his boots.

He also wears a head guard that looks more like a circlet since the part that wraps around his head is mostly covered by his hair. The crystals built into his armor all provide minor rifting/magic protection. His earrings are usually silver, and he usually wears a black scarf around his neck in cold weather. Otherwise his undershirt will be high collared/turtlenecked to cover his neck area even when he's not wearing a scarf. If his uniform seems a bit too hot for anything but cold weather, either he doesn't mind or you'll never hear him complaining.

When off duty, which is pretty much never outside of him actually getting some sleep, he still tends to dress very similarly to how he does on duty in terms of colors, just without the armor. Most commonly he wears a red tunic with black pants and boots. He also has various armor sets for more formal occasions when escorting Princess Purity, the designs varying depending on her outfit or the theme of the event.

Personality

Addle is a responsible and respectful royal knight of Crystaless who has a kind heart underneath his serious demeanor. He tends to act professionally at all times, since he's basically always on duty to protect the royal family, especially Princess Purity. He can come off as a bit stiff and severe at times, but he is down to earth and cares about protecting not only the royals but any denizen of Crystaless. He is a stickler for rules and is very formal and respectful in both his mannerisms and speech. Addle doesn't usually talk to others unless necessary so he can focus on his work, so most people consider him to be rather quiet and mysterious. He prefers for people to know less about him so their emotions or his own don't affect his work or responsibilities, because it's often clear that he gets very passionate about anyone he's emotionally invested in. He often fights with himself internally to keep his composure and remain professional, but he also wants to let how much he cares about others spur him onward. Most people know very little about him since he doesn't usually take personal time to relax and socialize. However, it is clear he cares dearly about the royal family, his fellow soldiers, the staff of the castle, and the citizens he must also serve and protect. Despite his somewhat emotionless manner of executing orders, he will selflessly protect the people of the kingdom without question and put himself in harm's way to defend them without hesitance. He maintains a very down-to-earth personality and never shows any sign of arrogance. If anything, he tends to underestimate himself often, and while he will accept compliments he tends to believe he doesn't do anything that warrants them.

Although he does not lack confidence, he does not like being the center of attention or receiving too much praise. He tends to brush off offenses rather easily, although he can at times be bothered by the occasional difference in treatment toward him by others who don't consider him to be a "pure Bellinan" due to his wings. He works hard to prove he's just as capable and worthy as any other denizen of their world, but he doesn't have any will to speak against any negativity directed at him. The only time Addle ever seems to break from his serious-streak is if certain people, particularly Princess Purity, can fluster him enough. As adults, he develops strong feelings for her, yet he feels forbidden from making any sort of advances in any potential relationship beyond their professional one, plus he believes himself undeserving for her. Due to this, although he is often in close proximity and in contact with the princess often, he can sometimes get distracted or flustered if she gets too intimate with him. Since the princess is usually more adventurous than her attendants would like, he tends to get a little exasperated by her when she's difficult to keep up with or she does potentially risky things (usually done to purposely get him worked up). She seems to be the only person that can throw him off his game or make him stutter, although the queen can sometimes do that too if she talks about weird subjects with him.

Abilities

  • Capable of channeling Crystaless magic energies and rifting through another source, usually to a lesser magnitude of the primary source
  • Flight by wings
  • Trained and highly skilled in hand to hand combat and in using spears and swords
  • Physically strong, agile, flexible, and well balanced, especially in flight

Strengths

  • Confident, fearless, and loyal
  • Clever, instinctual, and responsible
  • Organized, observant, focused, and alert
  • Selfless, down to earth, and empathetic

Weaknesses

  • A stickler for rules, a bit socially stiff, and tends to keep himself emotionally closed off and keep his troubles to himself
  • Completely dedicated to Princess Purity and will put himself at any risk to protect her
  • A little sensitive about people treating him differently for his wings or suspicions he might be a Clone or demon
  • His wings are rather unwieldy in tight spaces and he cannot "hide" them without external magic

Backstory

Addle was presumably born in Seavion of Crystal Field, although he has no memory of his parents. He was raised by his adoptive parents, his father a fisherman and his mother a seafood chef. Addle frequently helped his parents with fishing and bussing dishes in the family restaurant, and he had a relatively quiet and unassuming childhood. However, he suffered from prejudices and suspicion due to his wings, which were unheard of characteristics of a normal Bellinan. Rumors went about that he was a Clone or demon, but he was fortunate enough to have avoided any severe or violent harassment. When he turned 10, he decided to travel to the palace to become a squire. He was eventually accepted after days of persistence, since they were hesitant to take in someone who could be a Clone. Addle worked hard to prove himself, and he ended up at the top of the group of squires.

Addle first met Princess Purity when he was 12 years old. He saw her standing at a palace balcony while he and the other squires were below in the training yard. She fell while reaching for an apple from a nearby tree, and Addle managed to fly over and catch her in time. A few years later at 15 when he was recently promoted to knight apprentice due to his advanced skills, he was surprised to find that the princess wished for him to work toward becoming her personal guard, despite his lack of experience. More surprising to him, the queen also recommended him for the position even when his own mentor and general spoke against it. Knowing the general, although proud of him being at the top of his age group, disapproved of him receiving such a great responsibility at his age, Addle worked hard to make sure the royal family would not regret their decision, and he was officially appointed as a royal guard a few years later.

During the time he spent serving the princess, he realized he was starting to fall for her as they both grew into adulthood and got to know each other more personally. His attraction to her worries him, and he attempts to bury his feelings in order to prevent overstepping his boundaries, especially since he's aware there has been discussion of Purity selecting a spouse prior to ascending the throne one day. He's determined to take each day at a time and serve the royal family and the denizens of Crystaless to the best of his ability.

Trivia:

  • The name Addle Devious is a play on "Waddle Dee," because when the series now referred to as Savior Son was once a big fandom crossover story that heavily referenced Kirby characters, the character who served as the princess's personal guard was a winged Waddle Dee named "Waddle Devious."
    • Despite his name, he is not devious in any sense. He couldn't bring himself to be underhanded if he tried.
  • He seems to enjoy being outdoors the most, particularly around the sea, since he originates from a coastal town. He also seems to love clear, open skies when he seldom has the chance to stretch his wings.
    • Ocean air is particularly calming to him.
  • As a child he experienced a lot of prejudice and behind-the-back rumors about him being either a Clone or a demon, neither of which are widely accepted in Crystaless, and although he wasn't necessarily bullied for it, the consistent gossip about him and hesitance from others to trust him has taken its toll on him.
  • Addle tends to avoid making eye contact with Princess Purity if it's not necessary, since it's very easy for him to get distracted that way. Just so easy to get lost in those eyes, huh?
  • A lot of royals of Crystaless tend to give him unwarranted relationship/romance advice and frequently ask him "how things are going with the princess." He gets rather flustered by it, but he's used to it by this point and tends not to comment anymore.
  • He does not have any magical capability to hide/reveal his wings at will, so he has to deal with their size and span at all times. The only instances where they can be magically hidden is if someone else, usually Princess Purity, casts a spell to temporarily hide them. This is typically only used if they need to go somewhere enclosed where he may not normally fit, or for certain formal events in which he must serve as her escort and hiding them would just be more convenient.
  • To Addle's dismay, Marx has developed an unhealthy obsession with him, specifically with his wings. Marx always tries to possess his body whenever they encounter each other, since he seems to love their wingspan and how it feels to fly with them rather than just levitating.
  • He can be unintentionally prickly toward Clones who assume he is also a Clone because of his wings. He tends to be cold and distant toward most Clones in general and has no desire to associate with them unless necessary. He doesn't think anything less of them as a whole like many Bellinans do, but he doesn't want to be lumped in with them and their negative reputation.
    • Marx definitely hasn't helped in improving Addle's reaction toward Clones in general.
  • Sometimes referred to as "The Crimson Knight" since his red uniform is distinctly different from the other royal knights, mostly because he's distinguished from them as the princess's personal guard.
  • In his original design, he was supposed to have red streaks in his hair. I decided against this when making his new colored reference since another character of mine, Exodus, already had a similar hair style that was black with red streaks.
  • Although severely injured during the attack on the palace by the clones at the start of the series, Addle set Mackerby Rainstle's destiny in motion by handing the royal family's Sword of Flames off to him.
  • He’s not quite a neat freak, but he prefers his space to be in a particular order and gets stressed when things get disorganized. He also tends to be uncomfortable in very cluttered spaces, but he never voices his feelings on the matter to avoid bringing attention to himself.
  • Although he is often kept busy, Addle still is relatively close friends with several of the knights he trained with when they were squires. He wouldn’t say they’re probably as close as most peoples’ close friends, since he doesn’t really open up to them all that much on a personal level, but he appreciates they include him in their circle of friends.
    • He doesn’t have much time to spend with them usually, but he does sometimes have conversations with them when they cross paths and he’s not too busy with his work. He also regularly takes time to practice/spar with them if they ask him.
  • Although it’s less of a problem now that he’s an adult, Addle tended to have issues with people not taking him seriously as both a squire and a young knight, both because of his age and since he looked unusual for a Bellinan. He gets rather irritated when people don’t think he’s competent or make judgments about him before they even observe him taking action, but he’s gotten used to withholding any comments he may have to avoid trouble.
  • His favorite color is red.
  • Addle’s humanoid redesign was made around the same time everyone from Savior Son was redesigned to be humanoid, which was around 2008-2009 or so.
  • Doesn’t get nearly enough sleep as he should, but he doesn’t allow this to affect his performance. He tends to be a rather heavy sleeper, but only because he tends to only sleep when he is exhausted.
    • Purity has sneakily used her magical lullabies to force him to catch up on sleep on several occasions.
  • He thinks it’s just normal because he is always present with Purity at special events to protect her, but he is completely oblivious to the fact that usually even personal guards or royal guards at special events don’t get special outfits for each event like he does. Purity has gotten him convinced that if he is going to be at these events with the crown princess, then he has to dress the part, and she always has new outfits tailored for him to match whatever she is wearing to events.
    • In actuality, he’s the only one that gets this special treatment. Purity just likes seeing him dressed up all nice, and her mother and sister are in on it as well.
    • They’re probably subtly showing him as being the well presentable escort for the crown princess so most of the public sees him as that rather than just a royal knight. Purity just likes when he’s dressed handsomely, but it’s somewhat obvious that Wenona wants everyone used to seeing them together so they’ll assume he’s the princess’s suitor or something. She really wants those beautiful grandchildren.
    • Their ship name is Addlity.
  • Regularly writes letters to his adoptive parents in Seavion, and he is a little disappointed in himself that he hasn’t set aside time to visit them for years.
  • Hasn’t fished in years, but he knows many of the ins and outs of fishing since his father made a point to teach him everything he knew about the trade. He also knows how to prepare and serve fish pretty well thanks to his mother. He wouldn’t say he’s an expert, but he could probably whip up a good seafood dinner if asked.
  • Addle tries to avoid bringing up his feelings for Purity since he personally considers it inappropriate for a mere guard to express interest in the crown princess. He also considers it something he should not address because of the numerous talks regarding Purity selecting a spouse before ascending the throne in the future.
    • Purity is not required to find a partner before becoming queen, and there have only been discussions about it because she is interested in selecting a spouse before ascending the throne. Addle is too dense to realize the person she is interested in selecting is him.
  • Legs fo dayzzzzz
  • Old Charahub blurb: "A winged knight of mysterious origin, he serves the royal family of Crystal Field as the personal guard of Princess Jilligis."
