I tend to keep designs that I have a positive history with or I just love them.
However, if I feel that they should go to a better home or not click at all, I feel they'll serve better as an adopt.
I'm kinda stuck whether to sell or keep a design I've made. How do you guys do it? I think I make mine to specific to me and others wouldn't want them. Any adopt I do is on a base because of that.
I always keep the designs I mean to make for myself, but when it comes to adopts it can be super hard to part with them!
My rule usually is that if I REALLY end up liking the design I will keep it if nobody buys it within like a week or something. Sometimes I also decide to keep designs that inspire me SO much I literally can't go on a single day without thinking about them. Otherwise I try to harden my heart and sell them........
I usually go through a different process when trying to make a character for sale vs personal use. For adopts I think of what other people like and try making them unique. When I'm making something for me, well, a lot of the time it comes to me naturally without much thought. That or I already have a story or prompt I'm looking to fill specifically. I have never sold anything I put characterization/story into.
It just really depends on how I feel about the character after a long while. If I realize I have no real emotional connection to them, or no intent to really ever use them, even if just as a pretty face in my roster, then I usually consider selling. Although it takes a lot for me to get to that point, because I tend to easily get attached xD
for me I have a really hard time to actually get attached to any kind of characters that I don't use a lot. that's why my two main characters Onai and Jukhan are actually once I designed to play dnd as, but now they kind of developed into more then that (even thought they will still get used for dnd if I ever find a game again)
most other things I design either get sold/traded or I just throw them in the bin because nobody really wants my designs
