Story:

Paulus laughed silently while he kept throwing the small bag up, catching it mid-air.
He didn't care about what was going to happen to the poor excuse of a man he had just ruined totally. Paulus was sure he would sit in prison for the next few years and he still wasn't sure if the man actually even did committed the crime he was eventually going to be pronounced guilty for.

He shrugged. Who was he to care about something like that? The bag of gold in his hand was all that did matter to him and the senator who gave it to him hadn't been stingy at all. In fact he had paid him very well for what he had done to the male who was now going to rot in prison.
Trying to remember why the senator wanted the man out of his way Paulus scratched his head but he couldn't remember exactly. He was pretty sure the merchant had witnessed something he shouldn't have seen but he couldn't join things together.

Paulus stopped in front of a very small house near the marketplace and knocked on the entry door.
»Come in!«, a old but strong sounding female voice called. Paulus did as he was told.
»Hello, mother.«, he greeted her softly.
»Paulus!«, she said cheerfully. »Come here, let me take a look at you.«
Paulus followed her instruction and went over to her, hugging her in affection.
»Here, that's for you«, he said with a soft smile, handing her the small leather bag. »It's enough gold to get by for a month.«
She weighted the bag in her hand.
»That' a lot. How did you manage to get that much?«, she asked sceptically.
»Don't worry mother.«, he reassured her. »It's just a little bonus because of my recent work. I managed to arrest a criminal, you know and one of the senator granted me some more because of my hard work.«
She nodded, still doubtfully but eventually she sighed and carefully took one of his hands in hers.
»Please promise to be good. Don't disgrace the family name. Father would turn over in his grave and it would break my heart to loose you.«, she said with a very serious look in her eyes.
»Don't worry mother.«, he began in a soothing voice. »I am a decurion and I will do everything within my power to make father proud and to help you to get by. I won't do anything unlawful, I promise!«, he added swearing. Deep inside his heart he hated himself for lying in his mothers face but there just was no other opinion. His normal fee as a decurion would never be enough to support his mother financially and also he had done this for many years now and never anything had happened nor did anybody notice he sometimes secretly acted in a wrong way – and somehow he was sure it would stay like that for the rest of his life.
