Prior to Caleb’s birth, his mother, Evelyn, was studying magic under the Masters of the Mystic Arts. She left the Sanctum after getting married, and moved to a different city with her new husband, who was unaware of her affiliation with magic. When Caleb was 11, his parents died in an “accident,” though Caleb was not told many of the details surrounding their deaths. His mother’s wishes were for Caleb to be put under the care of other sorcerers if anything should happen to her, and he ended up at the New York Sanctum. Eager to learn magic for himself, he spent the next few months practicing with various sorcerers and reading any books he could get his hands on.
After displaying an unusually high aptitude for magic at such a young age, Caleb became a cause for concern among some of the sorcerers. The Ancient One worried that letting him exercise so much power while he was still young and impressionable could be dangerous. To add to her concerns, Caleb had an impulsive nature, and a habit of getting into mischief. After several nearly disastrous incidents, she finally decided that he would no longer be allowed to practice or learn more magic for the time being. She told him he just needed more time to mature and learn responsibility before he could be entrusted with more knowledge of magic. Caleb was frustrated, but had no choice in the matter. In early 2016, he was returned to the foster care system, but chose to continue practicing magic on his own in secret. In testing his magical abilities, he would accidentally damage property and be removed from a temporary foster home as a result.
The following year, Caleb learned of The Ancient One’s death through sorcerer acquaintances he still kept in contact with. Hoping that the new Sorcerer Supreme might consider letting him return to the Sanctum, Caleb sought out Dr. Strange. Strange could see that the boy was still reckless and would likely be too troublesome for him to look after himself, but also saw that he had a sincere passion for the mystic arts. He made Caleb a different offer: He would send him offworld to study magic on Asgard. Strange believed that the Asgardians would be better equipped to handle a human magical prodigy, since they were far more powerful than humans and could keep him under control if need be. Caleb was thrilled by this idea and eagerly accepted.
Caleb’s boundless energy and natural clumsiness tend to get him in trouble, even when he tries to be good. He has very low impulse control, and is often motivated just by sheer curiosity. Despite his troublemaking tendencies, he has a good heart and compassionate nature. He had a strong attachment to his mother and hopes to make her proud by excelling at magic.
While he does try to make friends wherever he goes, his intense personality makes him an acquired taste for some. He is extremely talkative and usually makes it hard for anyone else to get a word in edgewise, often jumping from one topic to another within seconds as they enter his head.
Caleb is a fast learner and has an excellent memory, and he will eagerly spend hours reading about magic or any other subject he’s interested in. Though he can be distractible, he is capable of intense focus when he puts his mind to something.
After being passed around so much over the years, he has grown comfortable with change. He usually acts upbeat and resilient about his situation, but he can be volatile when pushed past his limits.
