Irreverent

N'ever holds no respect for the status quo nor any established authority, and will gladly talk back, dismiss, or oppose those in power.

Cagey

She doesn't trust readily, and she's not in the habit of talking about her personal feelings, and honestly, she'd prefer not to hear others talk about their issues either.

Willful

Life has been hard for N'ever, but that's only served to make her hungry for it. It's nigh-impossible to pull her into despair.

Story

Before the Adventure

N'ever grew up in a poor household in Vesper Bay under the watch of her father N'fhayr Tia. N'fhayr had left the Aldgoat tribe when N'ever was just an infant in an effort to start his own tribe, though he would never see it come to pass. He was decent enough at hunting and gathering materials in the Foothills to sell, but such work would only get him so far, especially when he struggled with a daughter he didn't know how to raise.

N'ever grew resentful and rebellious in her adolescence, fighting with her father often and spending more and more time in the streets picking fights and pockets in equal amounts.

In the wake of the Calamity, however, N'ever lost her home and was separated from her father. Desperate and alone, she resorted completely to thievery. But the more trouble she caused, the more she drew the attention of local law enforcement. During one close encounter, she was almost apprehended, only managing to escape by stowing away on a ship headed for Limsa Lominsa.

A Realm Reborn

Upon arriving in Limsa Lominsa, N'ever immediately found herself in a familiar position - being chased down by a guard (as the crew of the ship she'd stowed away on had alerted the authorities). But in a stroke of good luck, the owner of the inn she ran into mistook her for an adventurer he was expecting to meet and vouched for her character.

Deciding it best to play along, she took on the position, pretending to be an upstanding adventurer until she could find a way back to Vesper Bay.

And so this is how she came to meet the Scions and become known throughout Eorzea - as a hero that she knew she wasn't, a lie made up to keep her out of trouble. N'ever was ever the conman, careful to keep her secret safe, but she couldn't help but start to crave the praise and attention she got from being the Warrior of Light. Not to mention the affection she was starting to legitimately feel for the Scions.

Maybe.... maybe she could try this hero thing for real.

Heavensward

N'ever's time in Ishgard was bitter, the loss of her newfound friends leaving her guarded and angry. With the exception of Haurchefant, with whom she'd developed a genuine friendship, N'ever regarded the people of Ishgard with irreverence and disrespect. Still... she couldn't quite shake her newfound sense of heroics, no matter how much the place frustrated her.

After a chance meeting with a corpse, she traded her axe for a greatsword and found herself, much to the dismay of both parties, partnered with Estinien on a mission of peace. The two rarely had a moment of peace themselves on their travels, bickering almost constantly until their return to Ishgard.

And yet, those days would be still happier than those to come. The death of Haurchefant hit N'ever harder than any loss before, driving her into a furious, single-minded pursuit of vengeance against Ser Zephirin - a pursuit that would lead her to slaying the entire Heaven's Ward and the Archbishop.

Stormblood

By the time N'ever entered the conflict to liberate Ala Mhigo and Doma, she was through with grieving. With a somewhat concerning fervor, she threw herself into battle after battle, relishing in the single-mindedness of just beating the shit out of something. It felt good to have a simple goal. It felt good to hear her allies praise her. It felt good... until she's beaten.

The loss to Zenos at Rhalgr's Reach left her shaken, not just in her confidence, but in her sense of self. If she wasn't the strongest, the toughest, the best fighter then... what was she? And did she have a place with her friends if she couldn't win their battles?

She got mad, and she fought harder. She would say it was for her friends, and that wasn't exactly untrue... but it was undeniable that she wanted very badly to get back at the Garlean prince.

So, when she lost control of her inner beast fighting Zenos in Ala Mhigo, and he noted how alike they are... it was an ugly wake up call. After his death, she was noticeably more hesitant in battle..

Shadowbringers

Losing to the Ascian-possessed Zenos at Ghimlyt Dark was a blow almost too humiliating to bear. So, when N'ever meets the man who made her falter - a man called the Crystal Exarch - she's quick to give him a piece of her mind (and fist). Still, with no way to rescue the souls of her friends herself, she begrudgingly agrees to help eliminate the Lightwardens from the First.

But not before reuniting with an old adversary.

Ardbert had been the last person on N'ever's mind that first night at the Pendants, but seeing a familiar face at all was, in some small way, comforting. Even as she slew more Lightwardens and reunited with the scions, she was grateful for Ardbert's presence.

Long had she been wary of wielding her axe for extended periods of time, swapping back to the comfort and reliability of Fray and her greatsword often. She'd still not shaken her doubts about her inner beast. However, when faced with the horrors of Emet-Selch's Amaurot and corruption to the light within her, it was an axe she held in her hands, an axe Ardbert offered her. And it felt right.

Y'shtola Rhul [ it's complicated ]

N'ever would be lying if she said she didn't find Y'shtola a bit intimidating, but there's also something about her that's undeniably magnetic. Now, if only either one could let down their guard for a moment.

image19.jpg?v=b59b615f

Ardbert [ platonic soulmate ]

The only person N'ever has allowed to call her by her true name "Ever," Ardbert is the closest friend she has and the only person with whom she can share everything.

image20.jpg?v=b59b615f

G'raha Tia [ friend, bully target ]

He may have called her his inspiration, but to N'ever, he's the one inspiring her. While she didn't think much of him when they first met, his kindness and resolve in the face of certain doom endeared him to her.

image13.jpg?v=b59b615f

Alphinaud Leveilleur [ pseudo-family ]

Though once annoyed about this "bratty kid" bothering her at every turn, N'ever would now sooner take a killing blow than let him come to harm.

image02.jpg?v=b59b615f

Estinien Varlineau [ frenemy ]

Technically allies, Estinien and N'ever notoriously can't stand each other, and are not shy about letting the other know. Frequently. They rescue each other purely out of spite.

image12.jpg?v=23c83fa1

Fray (Esteem) [ inner darkness ]

In her hours of need, N'ever turns inward, for better or worse. She can't quite give up on the idea of Esteem as an entity independent of her, not when they've become her truest support.
