INTRODUCTION

Your name is JAEHYUK CHA and you are SHY and RESERVED. You’re not one to talk and are SELECTIVELY MUTE. You do talk, when you want, but the things that come out of your mouth are sometimes ODD. That’s mostly due to your LIMITED ENGLISH and the fact that your brain to mouth filter doesn’t work most of the time, so you say STRANGE, OUT OF CONTEXT THINGS every now and again. It's just a little quirk of yours.

Your main INTEREST is PLANTS and BOTANY, and your bedroom is basically a MINI-GARDEN. You have plants EVERYWHERE! On your windowsill, on your desk, beside your bed, on shelves… it’s almost never-ending! You like to TALK TO THEM and you document their growth progress in a little diary. You just REALLY LOVE YOUR PLANTS, so it was only fitting that you STARTED WORKING at a FLORIST.

You had a HORRIBLE UPBRINGING which almost ended up resulting in your PREMATURE DEATH, but somehow you seem UNHARMED – save for the fact that you SCARE EASILY and are INCREDIBLY JUMPY. In contrast with the past trauma you endured, you have an interest in ENCHANTED FORESTS, FAIRY TALES and even FLOWERS. Everyone thinks that it’s quite cute. You usually disagree because compliments like that leave you FLUSTERED and EMBARRASSED most of the time.

You're SURPRISINGLY also HORRIBLY JUDGEMENTAL and DON'T REALLY KNOW HOW TO TAKE A JOKE. You're very SERIOUS, in other words. Well, that and you ALSO DON’T UNDERSTAND MOST HUMOUR. It just doesn’t make sense to you.

Personality

Jaehyuk is shy, quiet, and very serious. He seems to lack a developed sense of humour as he doesn't seem to understand general jokes. They seem to fly over his head. He’s slowly starting to show his own sense of humour but it’s odd to say the least, and things he says tends to make others feel unsettled. Not in a bad way, just his speech makes him seem a little weird.

He’s very airheaded and is usually always lost deep in his thoughts or a particularly nice daydream. One usually has to click their fingers in front of his face to get him to notice them and he’s quick to let his thoughts wander without realising in the middle of a conversation, so it’s difficult to keep his attention. He also has a habit of speaking his thoughts out loud and he often doesn’t realise that he does this. It’s often awkward to onlookers when he does as there’s usually no context whatsoever to his speech, and that he doesn’t notice that he’s spoken.

Jae is also incredibly forgetful – aside from the memory blanks that come with his alters – and often forgets he’s doing things as he’s doing them. It’s not uncommon where he’ll forget he’s walking and run into a wall, or he’ll just stop speaking in the middle of a conversation because he’s forgotten that he was talking in the first place. He scares easily too, so it’s always best you let him know you’re approaching as spooking him can (more often than not) result in another alter taking his place as a defence mechanism.

His expression is usually kept quite neutral, and while that may make someone think that he isn't really feeling anything, he's actually thinking about a lot. He doesn't tend to speak often, so his thoughts are often brimming. He never really has much to say, and for good reason. He's constantly judging people, and if he spoke his mind it wouldn't always be pleasant. Sometimes he's just... thinking about nothing in particular, and he's zoned out like he's on another plane of existence.

In saying that, he is quite empathetic and caring and is always willing to listen to others' problems, even if he thinks they're stupid. He’s always there to lend a hand even if he doesn’t quite understand why the other person is upset. If all he can offer is a pat on the back, he’ll give it. He’s very emotional himself and often overreacts to different situations. He’s the kind of kid that will cry because a plant he was tending to died or a pencil he liked broke.

History

Jaehyuk, his brother, and his father were people who immigrated illegally from North Korea to Australia when they were only toddlers. After the unfortunate death of their loving mother at the hands of their father, he fled with the children once he began to be tracked by the authorities. Somehow, they managed to get into Australia undetected, and found an old house to stay in. The two boys were rarely allowed to leave the house save for the odd errand whenever their father was drunk. They became very independent, but also very scared.

As the two began to talk and show their personalities more (what personality they had, being nothing but empty shells growing up), their father began to detest them. His alcoholism had gotten worse to the point where he was an evil man. He began to sexually assault them. It was subtle at first, but it quickly turned to rape. Jaehyuk took the brunt of it – being the eldest, he was held responsible for all the things that went wrong in the household and hence he was the one that was always punished the most severely. He dealt with this trauma on an almost daily basis and it caused him to withdraw and he ended up developing Dissociative Identity Disorder which originally started with him creating an imaginary friend for coping reasons.

One day, Rahart – Jae’s main alter – lashed out at his father with anger when he tried to assault Kiyung. The over-protective alter raised his hand in a blind rage and faux confidence. He was scared, but no amount of cowardice was going to let his brother get harmed. His father didn’t take kindly to this, and attacked him with a badly broken glass beer bottle. He slashed the boy over and over again across his chest to the point where he was bleeding out on the dirty carpet. Being as drunk as he was, the sudden movement make the father pass out as soon as the ‘hype’ of it died down – slumping to the floor along with a just-as-passed-out Rahart – or Jaehyuk. Kiyung was in shock. He couldn’t speak, he was shaking like a jackhammer. He didn’t know what to do – but instinct told him to get out or his brother would not fare well.

Somehow, he managed to drag Jaehyuk’s limp body out into the street, screaming for help. No-one paid any attention – it was late out and the streets were empty. He yelled until his voice was hoarse. He had no hope. That was until a woman and her two daughters ran over to him. It appeared that they were out for the night and the woman had a very panicked look on her face. Kiyung didn’t remember anything after that. He had fainted.

Most of everything else went in a blur. One second they were in hospital. The next they were speaking to police. The next they were in court. More hospital. More court. Papers. There were lots of papers. And suddenly, they were adopted, and his father was gone. He had no idea what happened and it felt like it had happened so quickly but that was not the case. It was a long process and the boys had become emotionally and mentally withdrawn. They rarely spoke, and rarely left the house.

The mother, Helen, was luckily very patient with them. It took her an awfully long time, but she had managed to slowly – very slowly – draw them out of their shells. She did little things like take them out to the shops with no real goal in mind just to see what they were drawn to or what they liked. It turned out that Kiyung loved the arts, and he soon found himself painting his days away. He still never spoke, but at least he was doing something and his face was starting to light up. Jaehyuk, on the other hand, was drawn to plants and Helen bought him a few succulents which he spent countless months maintaining. His English still wasn’t very good, and neither was his brother’s, and this was another main reason why he was finding it difficult to open up and feel at home in his new family. Helen did a lot of searching, and managed to find a young man called Travis who was almost fluent in Korean. Not North Korean, but she hoped that it would be something. He was also the same age as Jaehyuk, being fourteen at the time, and she thought it would be a good thing to allow another young teenager into their life.

She met with Travis and explained the situation, that he had to be patient, that she’d pay him, and that the boys were very easily scared and startled. He agreed to help, but refused to take payment. It turned out that he was a very polite and kind young man, and Jaehyuk grew close to him very quickly. Travis found it difficult to tutor the boys – with Kiyung not being able to focus and Jaehyuk having to do the same work over and over again because of his alters – but slowly the boys began to learn enough English to be basic conversational.

Once they were able to properly communicate, their personalities started to come out a lot more. Jaehyuk was found to be quiet by nature, and fond of gardening, books, and documenting botany. Rahart was a rowdy kid who was very loud and somewhat annoying. Seulki (another alter of Jaehyuk’s) was found to be rude, but a diligent studier who enjoyed sewing and dancing. With, Kiyung, however, it was obvious that the damage had been done. He wasn’t mentally ‘all there’ and became difficult to handle very quickly – especially once he was enrolled in school the year later. He hadn’t had any schooling in his life (and neither had Jaehyuk), but Travis (being the intelligent kid that he was) tutored them on much more than English during their time together, sometimes bringing his brother, Caleb, along to help.

After they enrolled in school, Jaehyuk found it very hard to fit in due to others demonising him for his illness. Calling him things like ‘freak’. While Jae didn’t mind all that much and was pretty content with his already small friend group consisting of Travis and his friends, Alicia, Seichi, and Rina – Rahart wanted to get to know more people. He managed to make his own friend group of other school outcasts and they weren’t exactly the best influence on him.

Due to his friends’ bad influence and general carelessness, he managed to get Alicia pregnant during her 11th year while he was in his 12th. He vowed he’d be a better father than his dad ever was to him and became determined to treat her perfectly. Jaehyuk, on the other hand, was very disconnected from the news and wasn’t interested in being a father until he saw the baby for the first time after she was born. He immediately felt protective over her and held her tight. Since Alicia was still in school – as the baby, Emily, was born during – Rahart took care of her while Alicia was studying and going out every day to Hillview High. When she was home after the childbirth, he took it upon himself to collect work from school for her and bring it home for her to work on so she didn’t miss out on anything. He took care of her very well and despite her originally being a fling, he did love her very much. He continues to do his best for both his (now) girlfriend and his daughter, and hopes he can marry her one day in the future.

Jae has an average build and is 5’5" in height. He's got a decent amount of muscle on his arms and legs, and has visible abdominals. He has a decent facial structure with a strong jaw and visible cheekbones, but still has soft cheeks. He has a scar that comes up the middle of his right jaw, a small one on his right ear, a somewhat large one jagged one near the middle of his neck, many littering his arms and legs, with a very large one in the centre of his left forearm. He has three very large badly healed scars that go from his left shoulderblade that run diagonally down his chest. He's covered in freckles over his nose/cheeks, ears, shoulders, arms, and legs. He tends to wear his hair brushed neatly over his forehead. He has a white ratstail coming from the back of his head.

The outfit he prefers and likes to wear are large sweaters and jackets that can cover his arms and help him feel all snug and warm. Either that, or he favours t-shirts with half-length sleeves and a long-sleeved undershirt. He wears these with black jeans and high-top red canvas volleys. It’s very rare that he’s seen in just a regular t-shirt and shorts, but if it’s hot enough usually he’ll begrudgingly cover up less. Examples of his fashion sense can be found here.

Tunes

❛❛Trying hard to reach out
But when I tried to speak out
Felt like no one could hear me
Wanted to belong here
But something felt so wrong here
So I pray I could breakaway❜❜

(Kelly Clarkson - 'Breakaway')

Trivia
  • Jaehyuk might be scared easily, but he doesn’t have stagefright in the slightest. He’ll be perfectly happy singing in front of his friends – or even a crowd if he so desired.
  • He's got a permanent stutter, but it's mostly an effect of his inability to speak fluent English (despite being able to understand it completely)
  • The ratstail of hair that he keeps long is naturally white. He’s got a birthmark on the back of his head near his neck that causes the discolouration of his hair.
  • He's very affectionate and is always cuddling up to people that he likes. He also has a tendancy to kiss his close friends on the forehead or cheeks as it's his way of showing that he loves them, even platonically.
  • Due to autism, he gets frustrated really quickly and easily if something isn't going his way or if someone is trying to make things sound more difficult than he thinks they are. He has a very one-track mind, so if there's obstacles in the way of something he thought was easy to achieve, it stresses him out and he panics.
  • He's a talented artist but he doesn't think much of his drawing. He has a large book where he sketches portraits, seeds, and leaf/flower types of all different kinds of plants he comes across. He also presses real flowers and tapes them into the pages and writes lengthy information in his native language on all of these plants.
  • He has about six alters in total, but only two are clearly known by his friends and family. This is because his other four don’t speak English and aren’t commonly seen – and if they are, the periods are brief. Only his younger brother has caught wind of them, but he still isn’t certain. Jae knows as he keeps a journal where they all write in, but even he can't be sure they're all actually documenting their time in that journal. He knows it's not an effective method in keeping tabs on them, but it's all he has to rely on.

KIYUNG CHA - Younger brother

Jae and Ki are both still very close and generally never seem to argue or bother each other negatively. Kiyung – who’s usually quite loud and boisterous – tends to quieten down around him and understands his needs, space, and feelings as though they were his own. Jae shows clear concern over Ki’s behaviour and actions, and tends to take the older sibling role of lecturing him whenever he acts up. Unlike with Rahart, Ki actually listens to Jae and always tries to make it up to him if he’s somehow upset him.

DANIELLE JAEGER - Adoptive older sister

Danielle is very much like a mother figure to Jae and he feels very safe and comfortable around her despite her being his older sister. They genuinely care for each other and are always there to help one another through their problems. She’s been by his side since they met, and it took him a long time to adjust when she moved out of home to live with her husband. Like their mother, Dani is very calm, kind, and patient and is always helping Jae whenever she can.

LAUREN COLLIER - Adoptive younger sister

Lauren always gets in Jae's personal space, messes with his belongings, and is generally a nuisance to him. He hates it, and she knows this, but she's just playing the role of a mischievious (yet loving) younger sister. She doesn't find it as fun to mess with Kiyung or Rahart - and she doesn't dare try his other alter, Seulki - so poor Jae gets the brunt of her annoying behaviour. He always complains and makes a fuss, which is exactly the reaction she likes to get. It seems her goal is to annoy the hell out of him, but what kind of sibling would she be if she didn't?

HELEN MAHI'AI - Adoptive mother

Jaehyuk is surprisingly not much of a 'mummy's boy', and is actually quite independent - getting visibly frustrated whenever she fusses over him. She knows to give him space and he appreciates that she does more often than not. She no longer worries about his quiet nature (worrying that something is bothering him 24/7) as over time, she's learned that's just the way he is, and he's usually in a pretty content mood when he's quiet - and that she should be worried when he's actually being verbal. Despite his insistance on being left alone, sometimes he'll cuddle up to her and it seems he doesn't want to let go. She never asks why, in fear of ruining the rare moments he does so.

1558226?1548134186
ALICIA LUONI - Friend

Jaehyuk and Alicia get along well enough, but he’s not exactly sure what they are in terms of relationships. He considers her a friend, sure, but he doesn’t know if she’s his ‘girlfriend’ or what, considering they have a child together. While the kid is technically his but also technically not, he’s not really sure what to think of their relationship. They’re still good to one another regardless and Alicia respects the fact that he prefers them to be platonic.

1955439?1555497972
ISAIAH AHNER - ???

Jae isn't really sure what to think of Isaiah. He likes him, but only because he's his brother's boyfriend and that means he has to like him, obviously. He feels he's a bit too loud and doesn't like how he gets in his personal space all the time, but it seems they both respect each other enough most of the time.

1176628?1560417591
TRAVIS-KING MINOR - Friend/Ex-boyfriend

Travis and Jae dated briefly in highschool but ultimately that relationship didn’t work out as they simply jumped into it without really thinking. They split and remained good friends. Jae and Travis often hang out and spend time together as they really enjoy each other’s company. They briefly stopped hanging out for awhile after highschool after Emily’s birth, but quickly got back in contact after things smoothed out when she grew a bit older.

2109570?1548134020
FENIX LEUPP - Boyfriend

These two boys were both bullied a bit in highschool, and so became friends with each other through that. They had dance together which was where they met, and they had a lot in common and became very close. They eventually ended up dating, with both being head over heels for each other. Things became a little rocky with the whole Rahart/Alicia thing, but they agreed that – while they share the same body – Rahart is Alicia’s partner, and Jae is Fenix’s.

12280547_fqI.png
ADRIAN VUONG - ???

Jaehyuk doesn't know Adrian too well, but since he acts familiar with him he at least knows one of his alters is close with him, so he tolerates the guy. They're too alike in terms of shyness and quietness, and that makes it a bit awkward when they hang out as they both usually sit together in silence. Jae doesn't visit him on his own terms unless Alicia's convinced him to take Emily to visit her friend, Noah. Even then, Adrian's girlfriend usually does most of the talking, but he doesn't really care for her either.

EMILY CHA - Daughter (pictured late-AU)

Jae doesn't really take the full responsibility for Emily despite being the one on the birth certificate. When he was first told that Alicia was pregnant, he didn't really know what to think. In fact, he was actually really frustrated and bothered but never really spoke up. He didn't really want anything to do with the pregnancy as it was not something he ever thought he'd had to prepare for, especially at the age of seventeen. Once she was born, however, those parental hormones flooded through him and he was immediately connected to her. Not to the same extent as Rahart, but enough to be okay with her calling him 'dad'. He's not around her all the time, but will still go out of his way to spend time with her and take her out places. If anything, he acts like an estranged husband who gets custody on weekends. He's okay with that. As Emily grew older, she wasn't really too confused by the 'alters' thing. As far as she's concerned, she's got two dads and an aunty. She's also okay with that.
