PROFILE

Barbara is a girl who came from a very stuffy family with high expectations of her. They pushed her in all athletic areas, pushing her especially hard in ballet to teach her discipline. Everyone in her family was in a sport of some kind, with both her parents coming from dance and ballet, and she was expected to do the same. At a very young age, she was put into a special school specifically for ballet, in a very prestigious part of the city. However, seemingly everything was going wrong for her. The other kids at the school were very rude to her, her classes were grueling, and her teachers looked down on her. By normal people's standards, Babs was nothing short of a prodigy in her athleticism thanks to how hard she'd worked, but she was still getting pushed way too far.

This resulted in her running away from school, disappearing one afternoon with her slippers and leotard still on, and catching a subway ride. She ran off into the outer city weeping, feeling like she had no one to rely on. That's when she stumbled on the Reve Gentille circus, which was still in its beginning stages. She walked onto the grounds, surprised at how such a raggedy looking tent could draw such a joyous crowd. She had no money to go in, but Emma, the animal trainer, noticed her and allowed her to slip in with a smile. Babs watched the work-in-progress act with complete amazement. Everyone was already so incredible at their craft, but the person who captivated her the most was the confident, charismatic ringmaster. Immediately after the show, Babs sprang from the bleachers and talked to Sally, the ringmaster, begging for a job. Without waiting for permission, she gave a spectacular audition after explaining her circumstances, and how much she needed to get away from her current living situation. Sally was amazed, and took the girl under her wing right away!

To this day, Barbara is classified as a missing person. But she loves her new family, and loves life every day. A new spring has entered her step now that she's finally in a place where she can use her gifts to do something fun as opposed to being pushed into a box, and she's surrounded by people who completely adore and accept her.

PERSONALITY

Barbie is extremely excitable, sweet, loving, friendly, and silly. She has a true innocent child's heart, always taking people at their word and wanting to be a mediator and problem-solver. She is the perfect cross between being mature beyond one's years, and more of a child than one might realize. She can be very clingy, and gets attached to others super easily. She brings a vibrant flair of youth to the troupe. However, Babs is also very sensitive, and doesn't take criticism all too well. One misplaced statement can have her crying in an instant, and she also worries about being unliked. As a prodigy in her area, she's extremely hard on herself, and always feels like she's doing something wrong -- but lately she's been trying harder to have more confidence in herself.

LIKES

  • having a big stack of books to read
  • eating a meal with other people
  • getting to play games with others
  • dancing just for fun

DISLIKES

  • sleeping alone/completely in the dark (she sneaks in to sally's tent a lot because a lot of times Sally works through the night with her lights on, so Babs just sleeps in her bed)
  • bullies
  • being meanly criticized
  • being yelled at or scolded

TRIVIA

  • Her performing name is "Flower Power".
  • Everyone in the troupe calls her Babs, Babsy, and Barbie, which she likes, because her strict mother always used to solely call her Barbara.
  • She does miss her family sometimes, but after talking at length to different members of the troupe about it who have similar experiences in that area, she doesn't feel comfortable going back to them until she turns 18. She feels freer now than she ever did as an even smaller child, so she doesn't want to go back to them or be found by them, even though she feels a little guilty at the prospect of them worrying.
  • She has a wonderful on-stage dynamic with everyone. In fact, everyone in the troupe can't help but dote on her both in and out of costume.
  • Out of everyone though, she is the most attached to Sally. While everyone else likes to keep Sally at arm's length because they feel they can't completely trust her, Babs is constantly attached to Sally's hip. She sees only the good in her, and would believe her even if she lied about being born on Mars. Sally is everything that she wants to be: cool, confident, and seemingly all-knowing. She sees Sally as the mother she always wanted, and treats her as such -- mostly because unlike her actual mother, Sally is affectionate and playful, loves giving advice and wisdom, and doesn't really act mean or bothered by Babs presence. The two are nearly an inseparable pair around the tent.
  • Babs enjoys reading YA and childrens fiction. Even though she's only 13, she's a very smart reader.
  • Barnaby and Hank take it upon themselves to educate Babs since in their travels, she can't really attend school.
  • She also very much enjoys musical theatre. Her favorite musical is Cats.
