personality depths
traits: Captain Jack Sparrow is a good man, honestly, he is. He just tends to do things in a more... unconventional way. He's a trickster and a liar and a manipulator but he's also loyal beyond measure when it comes to friends - or his "crew" back in the day. He loves the sea and is more at home near the ocean than somewhere in the forest surrounded by trees. He likes to collect shiny things, mainly gold and other treasures, and he's not opposed to stealing. Like, anything. If you have something that he wants, good luck trying to stop him from taking it. He's a bit of a greedy, selfish man but he's still a good man despite it. Courageous (mostly) and protective (especially if you're attractive), he'll go to the ends of the earth to help someone if they deserve... mostly if there's something in it for him in the end but, hey, he's still willing to help! The thing about his "help," though is that he rarely ever has an actual plan. He'll just go for it, whatever it is. Captured by the enemy? He'll find a way to rescue you even if it means getting his own ass captured first. That's happened before, being captured while on a rescue mission, but he got out every time. He's a quick thinking, extremely smart, though his sassiness and sarcasm might make others think otherwise. He's not afraid to fight or steal or tease but he is very adamant about being against rape and child abuse. Slavery is a tricky topic with him, sort of, because he's not completely against slavery so long as you've got a reason to be enslaving whoever you're enslaving. That's actually how he became the man that he is today. He's not a big fan of royalty, having had bad experiences with royals before in his lifetime, but if you can convince him that you're not all bad maybe he'll give you a chance. Maybe. No promises, though. He's got a lot of trust issues and he isn't the most trustworthy guy himself at times. A lot of the times, actually. But he'll give you respect, so long as you are worthy of it. It may come as a surprise to many that he's kind of a feminist, too, at least in the sense that he sees women as equals and will not underestimate them. Will he still use them? Probably. Most likely. But will he treat them like dirt? No. Well, not all of them, at least.
mental health: 100%

history: He's led a rather incredibly life, unlike that of any other. He was born and raised by the ocean, taught to swim just days after his birth, taught to steal and fight and manipulate. He lived in a "crew" which was a bit different from the herds here in Wild Equines. There was the captain (his father) and then the rest of the crew. Mares were rare but appreciated. His mother was the second mate and no one ever questioned it. Until the royals came. They wanted to take over the sea loving group of equines after getting anonymous complaints from herds in the surrounding area. The crew caused too much trouble, stole too many equines, but the thing is, the ones they stole were slaves that they were trying to free. They didn't agree with the herds' view on slavery. A lot of former slaves would join the crew for a couple of months, getting back on their feet, before wandering off with enough training to take care of themselves. But the royals didn't like it. They saw the crew as rambunctious trouble makers that needed to be destroyed. They started by killing Sparrow's father, leaving Sparrow to become Captain when he was just three years old. But it wasn't until the newly appointed Captain led the crew into battle with the royals that they finally got their label. Pirates. Dirty, untrustworthy, worthless pirates. The royals began to spread rumors after the attack, murdering members of surrounding herds or kidnapping them only to blame it on the pirates. Eventually, no one believed in the pirate crew anymore. They didn't want them around. They gathered together, led by the royal King himself, and, having no other choice, they scattered. They fled into the ocean, swimming as far as they could. Many did not make it. Sparrow himself almost didn't make it but he managed to get back to shore, pulling himself up onto the sand, exhausted and alone, more dead than alive. He blacked out for a couple of minutes before the cawing of seagulls woke him up. Trembling, soaked to the bone, he pulled himself back up onto his feet and began to walk. He stumbled more often than not, a small part of him wanting to give up and collapse, to allow sleep to take over, but he knew that would only lead to death. So he forced himself to move, not knowing where he was. He had allowed the current to move him, unlike many of the others who had panicked and tried to swim against the current. He didn't know how far away from home he was. He didn't know if any of the crew were here with him. But he'd survived and that was all that mattered.
