COURTESY NAME :

CLAN :

Wei Ying, will you come back?

Lan Zhan (蓝湛, Lán Zhàn), courtesy name Lan Wangji (蓝忘机, Lán Wàngjī) is the second young master of the Gusu Lan Clan. Titled as Hanguang-Jun (含光君, Hánguāng-jūn), Lan Wangji is one of the Twin Jades of Lan, alongside his older brother, Lan Xichen.

Although the man he loved died thirteen years prior to the start of the story, Lan Wangji recognizes Wei Wuxian soon after his resurrection in the body of Mo Xuanyu. Eventually, Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian acknowledged their feelings for each other and became cultivation partners.

PERSONALITY .

In his youth, Lan Wangji is stubbornly obedient to the rules of his clan, to the extent that he punishes himself for stepping outside the Cloud Recesses at night alongside Wei Wuxian, although Wei Wuxian had actually pulled him outside when tumbling off a wall. However, he breaks the rules if they contradict his personal sense of justice.

Lan Wangji has a strong moral compass. He does not care to gain fame and glory from night-hunting; he goes wherever people need help or, as other cultivators comment, "wherever the chaos is." Although society had declared that the remnants of the Qishan Wen Clan had to die, Lan Wangji rescues the innocent child Lan Sizhui and raises him as a member of the Gusu Lan Clan.

Perceptive and intelligent, Lan Wangji recognizes Wei Wuxian from a single song. He notices small but important details, such as the maple leaves that indicate another exit from the cave of the Tortoise of Slaughter, and that the Water Ghosts has led them to the center of Biling Lake.

Lan Wangji's love for Wei Wuxian reveals his selfless nature. After he risks his own life to save Wei Wuxian, Lan Wangji confesses his feelings. The traumatized Wei Wuxian responds only by repeating "get lost." Nevertheless, Lan Wangji fights thirty-three elders from his own clan to protect him. Once Wei Wuxian is resurrected, Lan Wangji continues to protect him despite believing that Wei Wuxian had always known and does not return his feelings.

STORY .

YOUTH

Lan Wangji and his elder brother, Lan Xichen, were raised entirely by their uncle Lan Qiren. While their father Qingheng-Jun stayed in seclusion, the boys were only permitted to see their mother Madam Lan once a month. Lan Qiren taught both his nephews strictly in order to prevent his nephews from making mistakes in love like their father had.

Both boys looked forward to visiting their mother, and Madam Lan enjoyed teasing the stoic Lan Wangji. But when Lan Wangji was six-years-old, Lan Qiren informed them that their mother was gone. Not understanding what that means, Lan Wangji continued to sit outside her door month after month, no matter how many elders comforted him, or how much Lan Qiren scolded at him. Even after understanding what "gone" meant, Lan Wangji continued to visit her house.

MEETING WEI WUXIAN

Lan Wangji first encounters Wei Wuxian when the latter comes to Gusu to study under Lan Qiren's tutelage. Lan Wangji apprehends Wei Wuxian as he attempts to sneak Emperor's Smile inside their residence. When Wei Wuxian tries to bribe Lan Wangji with some of the liquor, the situation escalates to a fight that breaks one of Wei Wuxian's jars. Before Lan Wangji's eyes, Wei Wuxian drinks the remaining jar on the wall to avoid violating the rule forbidding alcohol.

As Lan Wangji is in charge of disciplining fellow students, he frequently encounters the merry troublemaker Wei Wuxian. In fact, he catches Wei Wuxian providing Nie Huaisang answers on an exam, and as a result, Lan Wangji is ordered to supervise Wei Wuxian's copying the rules in the Library Pavilion for an entire month. During this time, he frequently inflicts the Gusu Lan Clan's Silence Spell on Wei Wuxian.

DESIGN NOTES .

  • Lan Wangji is 188cm tall.
  • He has thirty-three whip scars on his back.
  • Beneath his collarbone is a scar from the Wen Clan's branding iron.
  • He always wears the white headband and robes of the Gusu Lan sect.
  • He typically carries his sword- called Bichen- and his guqin called Wangji as weapons.

TRIVIA .

  • His courtesy name 忘机 Wàngjī comes from the proverb 鸥鸟忘机 ōuniǎo wàngjī (lit. seagulls forget tricks). This proverb is derived from a fable found in the Daoist text 列子 lièzǐ from the 4-5th century BCE. It was later turned into the 15th century guqin song 忘机 wàngjī.
  • His ability to become drunk on a single cup of liquor is genetic.
  • Lan Wangji ranks second on the list of cultivator gentlemen of his generation.

RELATIONSHIPS .

WEI WUXIAN

husband / cultivation partner

Lan Wangji first encounters Wei Wuxian during the latter's time studying at the Cloud Recesses. Lan Wangji frequently finds himself vexed by Wei Wuxian's teasing. However, he quickly finds himself enamoured by the other boy, maintaining their relationship during the turbulent Sunshot Campaign and Wei Wuxian's slow downfall.

LAN SIZHUI

son

Lan Sizhui deeply admires Lan Wangji, feeling he has nothing to fear so long as Lan Wangji is with him. Lan Wangji pays him special attention, as Lan Sizhui remarks that he treats him just as a father or older brother would and that he has taught him how to play the guqin.

WEI WUXIAN .

NAME :
魏婴 . wei ying
TITLE :
含光君 . yiling patriarch
GENDER :
male (he/him)
BIRTHDAY :
oct 31
COURTESY NAME :
魏无羡 . wei wuxian
AGE :
~ 30
CLAN :
yunmeng jiang (former) gusu lan (by marriage)

We’re the only two unfortunate souls left here, aren’t we? If you don’t have useless conversations with me, then who will you have them with?

Wei Ying (魏婴, Wèi Yīng), courtesy name Wei Wuxian (魏无羡, Wèi Wúxiàn) is the founder of Demonic Cultivation and a former disciple of the Yunmeng Jiang Clan.

Known as the Yiling Patriarch (夷陵老祖, Yílíng Lǎozǔ), Wei Wuxian died in the First Siege of the Burial Mounds thirteen years prior to the start of the Novel. He returns to the living world in the body of Mo Xuanyu, who summons Wei Wuxian's soul through a Sacrificial Ritual.

PERSONALITY .

Wei Wuxian possesses an energetic and mischievous personality, caring little for rules and decorum. He enjoys teasing others and flirting with girls.

Beneath his carefree attitude, Wei Wuxian cares deeply for those he loves. He possesses a self-sacrificing spirit that ranges from mild risks like sneaking alcohol to his friends in the Cloud Recesses, to being willing to have his dominant hand severed if it means placating the Qishan Wen Clan's ire towards the Yunmeng Jiang Clan.

Intelligent and inventive, Wei Wuxian asks Lan Qiren whether there is a way to utilize resentful energy instead of suppressing it. Once he finds himself thrown into the Burial Mounds without his golden core, he invents Demonic Cultivation. Wei Wuxian has a strong sense of justice; he quickly joins the fight against Wen Chao in the cave of the Tortoise of Slaughter and is bold in protecting the innocent no matter their name or societal prejudice.

STORY .

YOUTH

Wei Wuxian does not recall much about his parents, who died during a night-hunt while he was still quite young. One of his few memories involves riding on his silent father's shoulders while his mother smiles at him from her seat on their donkey.

After his parents' deaths, he lived on the streets of Yiling, and developed a fear of dogs from traumatic experiences fighting them for food.

Jiang Fengmian eventually finds Wei Wuxian in Yiling when the latter is about nine or ten. After feeding him a piece of melon, Jiang Fengmian carries Wei Wuxian home to Lotus Pier. That night, Jiang Fengmian even allows Wei Wuxian to sit on his arm, arousing Jiang Cheng's jealousy and Yu Ziyuan's fury, since Jiang Fengmian is rarely affectionate to his own son.

STUDYING AT CLOUD RECESSES

At the age of fifteen, Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng are sent to study with the Gusu Lan Clan's famous teacher, Lan Qiren. Unable to sleep their first night, Wei Wuxian slips away from the Cloud Recesses to purchase the renowned wine Emperor's Smile. When he attempts to sneak back inside, he is caught by Lan Wangji.

DESIGN NOTES .

  • In his first life, he is 186cm tall. As Mo Xuanyu, he is 180cm tall.
  • In his first life, he had a scar from the Wen Clan's branding iron beneath his collarbone.
  • He formerly carried his sword- Suibian- with him as a weapon, but now uses a dizi called chenqing.
  • In his youth, he wore purple Yunmeng Jiang Clan robes.

TRIVIA .

  • He is scared of dogs.
  • In his original body, Wei Wuxian ranks fourth on the list of best-looking young men in the cultivation world.
  • His handwriting is notably messy.
  • Before his infamy, he was said to be a master of the six arts: rites, music, archery, charioteering, literacy, and numeracy.

RELATIONSHIPS .

LAN WANGJI

husband / cultivation partner

During their youth, Wei Wuxian frequently enjoys teasing the strict Lan Wangji; although Jiang Cheng states that Lan Wangji hates Wei Wuxian, Wei Wuxian insists that he does not hate him in return. Their relationship frays somewhat upon Wei Wuxian's turn to Demonic Cultivation, as Lan Wangji considers his actions cruel, bloody, and bad for his temperment.

JIANG CHENG

brother

After their initial spats upon Wei Wuxian's introduction to their family, Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian become close. Although Jiang Cheng frequently scolds Wei Wuxian for his reckless behavior, he cares deeply for his martial brother.
