Romulus
24
Cis Male

Half-Elf - Chaotic Evil - Cleric

A young scholar with high ambitions and fondness for the arts.

About"

"Poetry is also the physical self of the poet, and it is impossible to separate the poet from his poetry.
 - Salvatore Quasimodo"

Romulus was born as an only child to a single mother. His father was never in the picture and he and his mother worked together to make the best of the situation. Fortunately, though they weren't rich, they were able to comfortably make ends meet. Romulus attended public school throughout his primary education. He always had been a bright student who had a zest for learning.  Due to his passion for academics, he was invited to attend a private school and live in their dormitories during the school year. He began schooling at that institution during middle school and continued his education there until graduation. At this institution, he learned the benefits of being a teacher's pet and began to develop the habit of attempting to be a favoured student of every teacher he could. Through this habit, his abrasive personality started to grow.

Since Romulus started to be away at months for a time, his mother began to once again see other men. Often times this would result in Romulus meeting his mother's suitors and chasing them away with jaded comments about how they weren't a suitable fit for her. Despite his common disregard for other people, Romulus does have a genuine care about his mother, as she was the only person who had consistently been in his life. His abrasive personality often starts fights whenever he visits home, but the two still care about each other as a family.

Nowadays Romulus is in the middle of his college education, aiming to become a world-renowned poet, however, due to recent events he has taken a small break from his collegiate studies. He is pursuing worldly experience so that his words have more power and that he is able to better understand and serve his recently discovered deity.

Personality

"The only good is knowledge, and the only evil is ignorance.
   - Herodotus

Romulus is a man who values himself and his goals above everyone else. He isn't shy to say so if asked, as he believes it to be a mark of strength to prioritize yourself in a world that expects you to make sacrifices for others. He won't, however, just openly say it as he knows it is often frowned upon to have these sorts of views. Being polite at face value is, after all, very important to him. He is confident that he is going to be successful one day, and that his time in the sun will come, but that he is just on a journey to get there. He is also not so over-confident in himself that he doesn't recognize some of his own flaws. These often are the root of some of his caustic behaviour, projecting his issues onto people who are more talented in other areas than he. He will often attempt to get others to put in a bit more work than himself on tasks that he deems out of his wheelhouse, or that he simply doesn't want to put the effort into. Failure is embarrassing, so why not avoid it by making someone else look better (or worse if they fail too). In fact, he loves to make people look good! He believes that the confidence that he helps instill in other people through his assistance strengthens their bonds as associates, but maybe that means they owe him a little favor further down the road. That's what friends are for after all, right? But don't think he's not above dragging someone's name through the mud if they scorned him, in fact, that's what he's best at. He knows how to build you up, he is skilled at tearing people down.

"First impressions matter."

Romulus dresses with the intent to look simultaneously extremely un-noteworthy, but also eye-catching. He doesn't really like flamboyant styles, and would much rather stick to refined, subtle elegance. He would much rather dazzle with well-fitting cuts on a garment that is practical than through the flashiness of a costume piece. He appreciates the beauty of artistic fashion but believes it has a time and place. You would be hard-pressed to catch him not wearing, at the very least, a button-down shirt. He prefers muted earthy or greyscale tones as they are the most versatile. One of his favorite things about his own fashion sense is playing with texture variation.

Design Notes

  • His hair curls are supposed to look a bit like devil horns on the side, subtly.
  • When drawn, the beads on his glasses (eyes with green irises) can be drawn horizontally
  •      or vertically
  • His hair would technically be black, but I prefer it to be blue in art.
  • He may be short, but that's why we wear heeled chelsea boots to cope.
  • His clothes are always tailored.

Relationships

Aera: Mother

Aera and Romulus were each other's only real social link throughout Romulus' life, which led to them being very protective of one another. Romulus cares deeply about his mother and wants nothing but the best for her, but his expectations are set astronomically high. Aera is very proud of her high-achieving son, but wishes he would stay home more often. However, when he does visit home she often chases him out the door for his attitude.

Veca: Deity

Romulus works with Vecna, the Lich god of Knowledge, Arcana, and Death. Their relationship is complicated. Each expects a great deal from the partnership, but neither of them is particularly generous. Romulus finds Vecna interesting and a good way to achieve the things he desires, such as a longer life and to pursue education. Vecna just needed someone to help bring back his following

Romulus was born as an only child to his single mother Aera, a half-elf woman who was in a relationship with an elf who began to grow distant as the pregnancy progressed, ultimately leaving a few weeks after he had been born and didn't keep in touch. Aera thought it was best that Romulus never knew that his father left in that way and just told him that he left before he was even born. Romulus grew up having no respect for his father, something that his mother never chastised him for. They didn't have a horribly difficult life as Aera held a decent position as an at-home consultant, but it didn't mean money was rolling in for them either. They lived a moderate life with some difficult financial patches from time to time. When it came time for Romulus to go to school, Aera wished to homeschool him, but due to being their only income had no real choice but to send him to public school. Romulus thrived in school, earning him much praise from teachers, which was something he found much enjoyment in. This encouraged him to keep pursuing his education, which led to him finding himself socially excluded as he ended up becoming a bit of a teacher's pet. Aera was thrilled to find out that because of Romulus' dedication, that he had received an invitation as well as scholarships to attend a nearby private school. He was enrolled in middle school and was shipped out to live there during the school year.

Romulus had notorious difficulties befriending his peers. He never really got over this, despite sometimes joining in on group activities after school, but often he was an odd one out. It never truly bothered him, as he found spending time with his teachers as enjoyable as he had plenty of classwork to discuss. He began to find the perks of being a teacher's favorite, or at the very least, on their favorite list. He started pursuing this title from every teacher that he interacted with, often finding success as he didn't really focus on much other than that and schoolwork. It was during this time while Romulus was away at months at a time during that his mother started seeing men again. When he would come back during breaks he would often get into intense arguments and fights with his mother and her current suitor as he would pass judgment on her current interest harshly, saying what he truly felt to both of their faces. Aera knew Romulus to be judgemental, but due to his new, expansive, and educated vocabulary and new confidence he had a knack for getting her newfound love interest to turn heel and leave which frustrated her to no end. Their relationship started to become somewhat volatile at that point. Often times Rom would be sent out of the house after starting fights with her boyfriends but welcomed back at the end of the night. They still cared about each other deeply despite them driving each other nuts at any given point in time.

Romulus graduated high school with honors and moved onto collegiate education afterward. He went into the creative writing program with a focus on poetry and has been focusing on his studies. During one of his study sessions while in the library he happened across a book he hadn't seen before tucked amongst some poetry books. The cover was weathered and aged and piqued his curiosity so he decided to look into it. What he found inside intrigued him. It was a seemingly antique text with no author or time of penning. It detailed the story of Vecna, a man who rose to godhood through becoming a lich, even finding many powerful followers before disappearing into obscurity waiting to rise again. A bookmark fell out of the book with a strange attachment on it and Romulus felt something change. He decided to take the book with him to his dorm that evening and began to study the book more in-depth. It was at this point that his fate was irreversibly tangled into Vecna's web. He fell into a trance and found his purpose with the god, gaining powers to help aid him in the quest to revive the cult of Vecna. Those professors that knew him well noticed that something has seemed different about him, but can't really pinpoint what it is. Romulus no longer carries the tome with it, as he placed it back in the library for some other soul to find.

Summary

Why shoot for the moon when you know that something even better lays just out of your own knowledge?

Romulus knows what he wants on a base level. He knows what he can improve on in his life, and he has rational ideas on how to get there. However, he's much more interested in taking a calculated risk every now and again in order to achieve results that he couldn't even begin to imagine. All of this, of course, circles back to his main desire for a longer life that he feels he was cheated out of at birth, and the influence and prestige that comes with being a famous author.

Romulus has taken a break from the college program in order to pursue his religious journey. He's not made many direct connections for the cult of Vecna, however, he has heard talk about a gathering of religious peoples of all sorts of faiths and he feels that it is calling out to him.
