“They were all mine, and I took them. That makes me wrong?”

Centuries ago, he was a king.

His era ended when he cut them down, traded their lives for power and revenge. Peasants, merchants, nobles, royals – they were all his, and he took them. Every last one, without question or trial. Their souls would fulfill his bargain and sustain him beyond it.

From then on, his was nothing more than a kingdom of ruin. His lands withered and shriveled. His castle deteriorated around him. It all remained untouched. Scattered corpses decomposed, leaving nothing more than skeletons. Centuries of dust shrouded his blood-caked halls. And he, upon his throne, as patient as the dead. It was all as he left it, this horrid monument to his wrath.

Many tried to cross his lands, only to be strangled by dark magics, abhorrent extensions of the sorcerer. Those who lived the longest were those that sought him, because he was a fair king and because slaughter was best in person. So-called heroes and champions died challenging him for his lands and throne.

In time, outsiders learned their place. Any who wished to cross with their lives gave offerings to the shadows and made haste across his lands.

And now, for the sake of his people, this poor, simple, country farmer begs audience in hopes to strike a bargain.

The wretched king is almost amused.

I don’t have a name for him.

But that’s fine. ShadowDrac, (my evil co-conspirator, and Gawain's owner) has helped me accept that he has simply forgotten and that’s why he “won’t tell us his name.”

Which has actually been a fun idea to play with.

For one, it reminds me mythical demons and spirits. Knowing one’s true name gives the enlightened power and control over that entity. While such does not apply to this guy, it’s got the same vibe.

Secondly, it’s actually very plausible that he would forget his name. He had been alone for centuries with no real plans to change that. The only interactions he had before Gawain came along were challengers, and they didn’t know his name. I imagine they addressed him as something such as: you, monster, wicked villain, demon. There’s also the matter of his past; back then many people would have addressed him with the proper royal titles. It’s probably documented somewhere in the castle, but he doesn’t care enough to find it.

Lastly, Gawain’s possible course(s) of action after finally learning the king’s name. (Shadowdrac had some deliciousdelightful insight on that. I kind of want to post it, but I probably shouldn’t, haha.) So Gawain gets to know the name at some point, but I think he would be too greedy to share it, so it gets to remain some intimate thing between the two of them.

And so I have named the dragon Majesty. A.k.a. Black King, This Asshole, etc.

I’m the one that you need and fear
Now that you’re hooked, it’s all becoming clear
That all your judgments that you placed on me
Was a reflection of discovery
So maybe next time when you cast your stones
From the shadows of the dark unknown
You will crawl up from your hiding place
Take a look in the mirror
See the truth in your face

So how can this be?
You’re praying to me
As I look in your eyes
I know just what that means
I can be, I can be your everything

In This Moment - Whore

Particularly fitting for King and Gawain's early/mid relationship.
