As a fear-driven individual, and a well-trained one at that, Sylen is highly observant, frequently noticing specific things about people's behavior or his surroundings that others might overlook. However, as a result of his anxiety, he is often highly suspicious of others, and may construe something harmless as something threatening.

History

Although it's only within the last few years that Sylen has joined the Witchfinders, he has been wary of mages for most of his life. Though he was born in a society that took no issue with mages, when Sylen was around the age of ten, his childhood best friend Agnus-- born a mage-- became fully corrupted while the two were alone. There were no casualties, save for the friend himself; Sylen felt as though he'd watched his friend die twice-- once in becoming a monster, and once in being slain by their loved ones.

Since then, Sylen's fear of mages only grew. With each passing event-- of another mage corrupted, another town destroyed, another loved one lost-- the panic gnawing in the pit of his chest grew hungrier. Driven to the only faction he felt would tackle the issue, Sylen joined the Witchfinders in hopes that corruption could be ended for good, and as a wholeharted advocate for Archon Miriam's beliefs.

Though Sylen bears no true ill will against mages, he remains fearful of them, and as a result, has taken actions against them. Ideally, he sends a captured mage to the Order; but if too corrupt, he is not against execution. Lately, though, he has begun to question what actions should be taken at all.

Sylen is only now aware of the latent magic within him, and has little control over his abilities. He desperately fears his powers, and the potential for his own corruption.

DESCRIPTION

For most of his life, Sylen was not aware of his magical abilities and believed he was a non-mage among the Witchfinders.

Sylen has the power to convert memories into a tangible form-- a fog that coalesces around him under high stress. When inhaled or consumed, these memories can be reexperienced mentally, from the perspective of the memory's owner, regardless of who inhales it. The experience feels real and is very intense. It should be noted that the memory is viewed only as its keeper saw it; certain aspects of the memory may be blurred, skewed, misheard, and so on, depending on the original keeper of the memory.

STAT ELABORATION

  • 2 POWER: Sylen can now 'pull' memories of other people into the fog, rather than just himself.
  • 2 DISCIPLINE: Though he still cannot summon the fog at will, Sylen can voluntarily dismiss the fog, if he so chooses.
  • 1 CORRUPTION: Every so often, when looking at Sylen, another person might see the visage of someone else; typically someone from a bad memory. Sylen is not aware of how he appears to the other person, and this instance only lasts a moment before vanishing.
  • 1 COST: Magic slightly affects the memory of the caster: when Sylen converts one of his memories into a tangible form, he must inhale it, or he loses the memory forever; the same goes for someone else if their memory is pulled and they do not inhale it.

Additional skills

  • Sylen is an adept ranger and hunter with excellent tracking skills.
  • Sylen is a skilled nose-to-tail cook, cooking more for function than fun.
  • Sylen is trained in low-level leatherworking and crafting with animal material.

Bonds

Allies, enemies, & others

▸ Malmr

Easily one of the most complicated relationships Sylen has ever experienced, he initially met Malmr shortly after realizing his powers, and the two became fast friends. During their journey toward Namarast, where Sylen hoped to deal with his mage status, Sylen discovered that Malmr had been hiding the effects of corruption. Sylen viewed this as a great betrayal, and a slew of blight wights, a ghostly witch, and a burning shed later, the two parted ways, their bond broken and wounds unhealed.

▸ Agathias

Upon discovering his powers, Sylen immediately sought aid in, ideally, removing them; after sending Agathias a letter and a good bit of coin under the table, Sylen trekked to Namarast to be treated by the doctor and be healed from his curse.

▸ Ilmora

Though they knew each other for little more than an hour, they learned exceptionally intimate information from one another through Sylen's memory fog. Jealous of Sylen, Ilmora lashed out, desperate to claim his body and memories for her own; he tore her from his head and sent her off, though not without being scorned and left scarred by the experience.

▸ Whitaker

Initially comrades-in-arms among the Witchfinders, Sylen once looked up to Whitaker as a strong, infallible leader. Years after working together, they reconvened, each having realized that they were mages all along, and both coping with the reality in different ways. Sylen has since lost his respect for Whitaker.

▸ Agnus

Sylen grew up in a peaceful village alongside his best friend, Agnus-- a mage. The pair were inseparable, each of their parents like a second set to the other; when Agnus suddenly and swiftly corrupted, attacking the village, it was both of their parents that felled the monster. Sylen felt as though he'd watched Agnus die twice in one day. Since then, all of Sylen's life has been focused on preventing and ending corruption.
