Earl

Earl is an Age of Lights City denizen who is credited with the invention of many of the gadgets that come into the hands of the major characters.  The Burst Wing and the Screaming Heart, diametrically opposed in their use and design, were both inventions of Earl and his crowning achievements.  While Dennis of The Weather Machine and Vincent of The Mind Haven, focused on large, society changing machinery, Earl focused on personal, effective, and sleek yet powerful single person items.  And, again, in comparison to Dennis, the world's most famous celebrity at the time and Vincent, a literal mad scientist hermit, Earl was quiet and reserved but intelligent, well-meaning and honestly harmless. 

He can be known to be a bit neurotic at times but he's oddly enough the most "normal" of the Age of Lights scientists.  He can be known to be so in his head that he simply does not hear when someone talks to him. He has to be constantly reminded that someone is talking to him or is trying to get him to see something.  He very often gets distracted by something in his mind. 

He spent most of his life in a small apartment near USC, one of the leading research stations in The City (LA at the time).  He was a research scientist and technician within the mechanical engineering department.  While beholden to one group, he spent a lot of his time in the department's prototype facility.  There he honed his design skills, using himself as the test subject most of the time.  He ended up with severely fracturing his right knee and his left foot in a test, leaving him unable to test.  Being the Earl he was, he refused any help from others.  That or he didnt realize they were asking for his help. 

Why he made his inventions is still a mystery to this day.  He never seemed to desire strong societal change, it wasnt for a huge cause nor did he receive money from any of them.  It's likely just because he thought it was fun and challenging.
