Description
Shio embodies much the Japanese folklore surrounding the kitsune. He is an intelligent yōkai that possesses the ability to shapeshift into a fuman form. What does set him apart from the rest of the pack (pun intended) is his disinterest in mischievousness.
He takes his position as a guardian seriously. He is faithful to those who care for his master, Inari, and his shrine. Humans who are pious will often receive guidance or assistance from Shio.
Shio does possess a much darker side, however. As a servant of Inari, part of his duties are to scout out the wicked and serve punishments. As previously mentioned, he is dedicated to his role and will be merciless, if the situation calls for it.
Trivia
- "Shio" is Japanese for "Salt."
- Alignment wise, he is Lawful Good. He has little tolerance for those who go against order.
- His favorite food is fried tofu, something he often receives as a shrine offering.
- His sun sign is Capricorn.
- All clothing and accessories he adorns are traditional Japanese.
Backstory
Shio is a myōbu, a celestial fox spirit seen as a symbol of good luck and blessing. Myōbu are servants of Inari Ōkami, the Japanese god of foxes, prosperity and harvest, among other things.
One notable difference between Shio and other myōbu is that while myōbu are often pure white, Shio's coat varies in tones of white and gray while possessing various red accents (and even horns). This is due to the complicated role Shio plays within the Inari Shrine that he serves: he is a bringer of blessing, but also a bringer of retribution and punishment.
Those who have acted against Shinto values often meet judgment at Shio's hands. The punishments that follow can vary in extremity; one may be punished by slight misfortune, such as missing work, or major misfortune, such as an unsuccessful harvest. The intensity is dependent on the misdeed itself.
