    Crown Princess of Anikora

Kanaris is crown princess of a monarchy whose death is long past due. Only the stubbornness of countless kings and queens, in the face of decades of revolt, has kept this highest seat of Anikora standing. Though on paper the nation governs itself, everyone is sure (though only in secret) that it is but a puppet of Ptrao—the conquering empire—and that the royal family is the puppeteer's hand.

Her father King Akno, like the monarchy, has evaded his death for decades. She knows that the longer he clings to life and to his seat, the messier the kingdom she will inherit from him.

Not that she could possibly wish harm on her father. But all his troubles will someday be hers: like the quintessential monarch, he can only hoard, can only expand his menagerie of errors.

It is hard to live knowing that your people would prefer you dead. And yet she does, of course she does. Her family's might is propped up by tight-knit organisations of administration and defence, and her own home, the Ike Kora Castle, is protected by an elite guard led by Theis Anais Hrano.

She cannot let this come to naught.

Kanaris has a small but commanding presence. People can't help paying attention, even those who do not particularly like her. It is not an influence born of force or fire, but sturdiness, like that of the old stone of which Anikora's houses are built, stalwart in the wake of winter.

Kanaris is mute/nonverbal and primarily communicates through both a sign language devised by her and her tutor (which the entire castle has learned), and with those not familiar with it, through a magical device that produces images and visual effects at her will.

She holds her cards close. As much as she wishes she could act compassionately and live true, she knows that there are times when the only virtue lies in doing as her family would do, as their history bids her do. She carries herself in such a way that it is plain she doesn't only act for herself: she is also the one to whom a centuries-long legacy will someday fall.

Kanaris likes gardens, when they do bloom. Anikora is too cold three-quarters of the year for any more than conifers and the coarsest sprigs of grass.
