The tail is wide and strong and the fins on her ears help them sense the currents in the water, making them an expert swimmer.

 Story

Ever since they were born, Vulle has been pulled in wildly different directions. Being an Eevee means that you’re spoiled for choice since birth, but when your parents are different Eeveelutions, and they both want you to take after them, then life is just that little bit harder than it has to be.

Vulle loves both their parents, very much so, but ever since they were an Eevee, both her father, a Jolteon, and her mother, a Vaporeon, had wanted different futures for them. It’s hard to appease two separate people, especially when what one wants is directly opposite of what the other desires. Vulle has tried their best, but in the end it had all been too much.

They had needed some space, a little quiet time to think over their options and decide on the best one. Sometimes, you just need to get away from all the hustle and bustle of normal life before you can really find yourself, and Vulle had known that getting some peace, some distance from the chaos, would do them good, so they ran away.

It’s less dramatic than it sounds. They were always going to come back, after some introspection and perhaps a bit of an identity crisis. Evolution can’t be delayed forever, and sooner or later, Vulle was going to have to choose what to evolve into. It had all been very overwhelming for them, and some time alone, without outside opinions or influences, would really help.

They’d left in the dead of night, so no one would notice them slipping away, or try to stop them from going. Vulle had been adamant about it, this was something they had to do for themselves. It had been difficult, to walk away from their family and all they’ve ever known, but the ends justify the means, and they had known that this journey would help more than harm.

The world is very big when you’re just a small Eevee, and for some time, Vulle had thought they’d bitten off more than they could chew, but after a while, they’d realized that being by themselves isn’t as hard as it had originally seemed. They’d been worried that they’d be lonely, but there are plenty of pokemon out in the world. There are those who lead nomadic lives, and they impart some of their wisdom, teaching Vulle how to live off the land. Some are travellers, only passing through, and they tell stories of far-away worlds, where things are infinitely different.

Vulle meets many new friends during their journey, and it helps to put their own problems into perspective. Sometimes, things seem a lot more stressful when you’re in the thick of it, but when you take a step back, it turns out that there are a multitude of problems in the world much bigger than your own. It doesn’t mean you have to trivialise your own troubles, but it helps to think of yourself as one small part of a huge universe. The sun will keep rising everyday, and you learn to soldier on, one step at a time.

Of course, this doesn’t mean Vulle has come to a decision yet. To be a Jolteon, or a Vaporeon? Choosing one over the other would mean choosing one parent over the other, and Vulle can’t possibly do that, they love them both, equally, and it seems like there’s no right answer, no solution where everyone will be happy.

They’re mulling over this issue when, all of a sudden, they bump into another pokemon. Vulle stumbles backwards, an apology automatically on the tip of their tongue, when they look up and actually see who they’d crashed into.

It isn’t any ordinary pokemon, that’s for sure, Vulle has to tilt their head backwards to see the entirety of them.

“I am so sorry,” they say, stumbling backward in poorly masked horror. Oh dear, this is certainly not what they’d been expecting when they set out on their travels.

The other pokemon looks positively mesmerizing, almost as if they’re exuding an aura that Vulle cannot see, but can certainly feel. For a moment, it remains silent, and Vulle peers apprehensively upward, wondering if they’re to be punished for their mistake.

Instead, the Pokemon simply nods, as if satisfied. “Your apology is sufficient,” it says, and the voice seems to echo all around. “What else ails you?”

Vulle hesitates, not knowing if they should share their petty troubles with what is obviously a much more ancient, intelligent pokemon. After a moment, however, their anxiety wins out, and out comes their entire story. The conflict with their parents, and why they’d had to run away in order to find some answers.

The ancient Pokemon simply listens silently, not speaking for a long moment, even after Vulle has finished their tale.

“I offer a solution,” it says finally, and the ground rumbles with a powerful, unseen force. When everything quietens down, Vulle stands unsteadily, feeling different. They rush forward to a nearby puddle, staring at their reflection.

They’re evolved, but not into a Vaporeon or a Jolteon, but somehow both, a fusion of their parents.

When Vulle looks up, the ancient pokemon has disappeared, almost as if it never was.

They linger for a moment, not sure how to give thanks, but finally just shout their gratefulness into the wind, hoping their benefactor is listening.

Vulle then turns around, and heads for home.
