Shiki doesn't even know her past life, she just knows to be dead. Her first paces toward her "new life" were to start travelling around space and dimensions, in order to find a quiet place to rest her heavy mind. She often mentions her "journey" but still has no idea why is she travelling, so one day ended up at the gates of Shado without even knowing what it was. Shiki was scared at first, it was a realm she never read about. She was sitting on the edges of Shado, thinking about a way to get up to the ordinary realm she was living in until her thoughts got interrupted by a strange figure without a face which presented herself as Dorothy.
