Fire Salamander (Sally) was born to a skywing mother and a mudwing father. When her mom realized she was with egg, she told her father, but the mudwing father wanted nothing to do with the kid. The skywing was just kind of a fun whim for him. So the skywing goes back home and has Sally around the time of the beginning of the war. When Sally got older, her mom warned her not to go looking for her father since he didn't want her. Her mom had to leave to join the war, leaving Sally behind, so Sally goes off to the mud kingdom to find her dad. She does, and the skywing wasn't exaggerating, he really doesn't want anything to do with her. The mudwing queen, however, finds out about Sally's power and wants her to lead an army for her as her "living furnace". Sally doesn't want anything to do with the mudwing queen, but the queen decides she's still half mudwing and still under her rule so she locks up Sally in her basement dungeon until she changes her mind. A plauge hits the mudwing kingdom, killing off the previous queen. She tells her living daughter, Damselfly, to go find the living furnace and finally use her to take charge of the war. But it's pretty cryptic message and Dam doesn't really know what a living furnace is. Dam finally finds out that the living furnace is Sally who had been locked in the dungeon for years, and immediately lets her go, horrified of what her mother did. Sally isn't convinced that Dam isn't going to try and use her as a weapon, but she starts to warm up to her later. She still distrusts mudwings because of this.
