For most, a life of adventure means travelling the world and seeing all that there is to see. Or perhaps even risking everything to do something great. Everyone dreams about it, some even act upon those dreams. To them, a life spent close to home is rarely an adventure. But to Flo, it is the greatest adventure. Home is where she found herself, gained and lost friends, and built her family. For a time she strayed, young and unsure of herself, searching for her place in the world. For her, that place was home, among the family that she cared for and who cared for her, both blood and not.
There is nothing more important to Flo than her family, chaotic as they may often be. They fight, they argue, they get into trouble, and they cause Flo all kinds of stress. But they are also the most caring, committed, and understanding, and at the end of the day, there is nowhere else she'd rather be. She is the glue that keeps them together, the shoulder they cry on, and the encouraging words that keep them moving forward.
A Herding Jader and Rancher's Companion
How it all began...
It was a chance encounter that determined Florence's fate. A young traveller had landed on the shores of the Oriental Isles to experience the famous Cherry Blossom Festival, her first time visiting the kingdom. While wandering the winding streets of one of the kingdom's small cities she came across a bazaar, the many merchants advertising colourful and elaborate wares. It was near the far edge where she happened across a merchant with a small assortment of Oriental Jader puppies, the regal canine breed that originated in the Isles but had grown in popularity across the mainland. Fascinated by the lithe canines, the traveller seized the opportunity to gain a new companion and picked out a small, spotted pup: Florence.
Shortly after meeting, Anya and Florence left the Oriental Isles, returning to the mainlands and venturing to her parent's ranch to rest and recharge. Much to everyone's surprise, the little Jader pup quickly grew attached to Anya's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hodgins, and, more importantly, their aging collie dire wolf, Aspen. The small pup spent most of the day chasing after the much larger dire wolf, frequently getting under paw and forcing the large canine to watch her step. And when she wasn't chasing her new two-tailed companion, she could be found sleeping on Mrs. Hodgins' lap or under Mr. Hodgins' chair. Recognizing the Jader pup's love for the ranch and its inhabitants, Anya made the decision to leave the small pup behind when she left for her next adventure a week later.
Life on the ranch...
Florence, more casually referred to as Flo by her new companions, adapted quickly to the farm. She learned the territory by patrolling the boundaries with Aspen and watching for signs of predators that might cause harm to the livestock, such as servals, prong foxes, and the rare dire wolf that had wandered down from wilder places. Unlike her large companion, Flo was a natural at working with the livestock and trained passionately with Mrs. Hodgins. Every morning she led the sheep rune dragons to pasture and watched over them until sunset when she would herd them back in, and when a young messenger jackalope escaped the pens she was the fastest and smartest when it came to catching them. The only creatures she actively stayed away from were the sleipnir, a close call when she was just getting started taught her to avoid those eight-hooved beasts.
Finding her place...
Flo was not quite three yet when her dire wolf companion succumbed to age, leaving her as the only canine on the farm. With the loss of her only furry companion besides the livestock, she developed what could only be described as a feeling of emptiness, like something was missing. She began to sleep less, and during what little downtime she had she began to wander and explore the world around the bubble that was her ranch, always returning home before she was needed. After several months of aimless wandering, Flo stumbled across another of her kind, a sleek, plume-tailed red Jader by the name of Nymph. So different from herself, the other Jader was a breath of fresh air and captured Flo's attention for a while. Their time together was fleeting, but it lead to a gift of puppies. Of the pups, Laurel remained with her the longest before growing bored of training with livestock and taking up residence in the nearby woods, often returning home to play tricks on her mother.
Not long after Laurel's departure, Anya returned home with a small Jader pup for her parents. Unlike her own daughter, the puppy, August (Gus), was eager to learn and was essentially Flo's shadow for the better part of a year. Despite his over-excitability, Flo enjoyed teaching the pup, and soon they were working together to keep the livestock safe. Their lives were cast into disarray a year later when Flo had a second litter of pups with a new companion, Pippin. This brought Bailey into their lives. While the brown-spotted pup loved the ranch, he was not particularly good with the livestock as his solid frame and clumsy paws made it hard to keep up with the much more agile rune dragons and jackalopes nor did he much enjoy working. Bailey and Gus clashed frequently, and, combined with their sister's penchant for causing trouble with the livestock, Flo is now kept quite busy maintaining the ranch. The hole that had been left by the loss of her first canine companion was now much smaller, though she often looks back fondly on those simpler times.

LaurelLaurel was one of three pups from Flo's first litter. Lacking any desire to be immediately involved in the ranch or in her family, she lives in the nearby woods, dropping in on her family when it suits her. |
August (Gus)Though not related by blood, Gus is like a son to Flo. As a pup he idolized her, following in her shadow. Now, he works side-by-side with her, and is loyal to his very core. |
BaileyBailey was one of three pups from Flo's second litter. Though far more laid-back than the rest of his family, he is still very protective, especially of his mother. |
