Vern

"A Fire Spirit is usually curious and mischievous, they like exploring and watching things burn, usually small things, but they are known for some "accidental" large scale fires."

Vern resides happily in Kwang's workshop, under strict instructions to stay put within his fireplace at all times (or if he'd like to go explore he must use the fire proof funnel system Kwang set up specifically for him, safety reasons you know. It leads all around his workshop allowing Vern to have ample space to move about.) 

How he ended up in Kwang's fireplace is... a story. Fran, a close friend of Kwang, snatched and captured him after several reports of wildfires happening around several towns. He's been on the run for a while and Fran had accepted the bounty to capture/ kill him (Fran chose the prior of course, that was too cruel.) One day a sighting of a rouge spirit exploring a little too far from it's home leaving burnt patches of grass in it's wake. These types of spirits are banned in most areas as many see them as a danger. He had been quite easy to bottle up and capture, being pretty tiny back then. Fran tried to auction him off to other magic users but no one wanted him as owning a fire spirit could be risky as they are a dangerous bunch. After much asking around Kwang took him in as he needed a better fire source for his furnace that would keep on going, minimizing the use of material and work into getting it started everyday. In a way it was a win win because the two became friends eventually, Kwang being a total homebody confined to his workshop and also being a great talking buddy.

It also just so happened that the same day Vern was sighted trekking across a field, a large village had been up in flames, killing most of the residents. It is unsure as to whether or not Vern was responsible for this incident but it doesn't help that there was a sudden stop of random wildfires after he had been captured. He himself claims he is innocent, and to this day he has been kept an eye on by the royal guard.

TRIVIA

• Vern was captured at a young age after being abandoned by his parents, hence why he was kinda wandering around. Fran saved him by capturing him first as if anyone else had found him he would have been as good as dead.
• He doesn't really "eat" more just burns the organic matter. Kwang didn't know this and would toss him raw eggs to make sure he's fed (in the beginning when he just started living there) and since then it's become his favorite meal.
• Vern can change form without any repercussions, he chooses to stay as a little ball of fire most of the time as it takes up less space. (and is relatively safer! no stray flames here)
