Profile

Curse Technique:

Tomo absorbs bad luck and can manually translate it into either additional curse energy that she can channel into weapons which she constructs, or good luck (probability altered in her favor.) Good luck takes more resources than a simple excess of curse energy. She is also able to store the “bad luck” from moments of mild to horrible misfortune in her own life for the same use. The more “bad luck” she stores without using it, the more misfortune she attracts towards herself, so she must maintain a balance.

The bad luck is stored in and released through the omikuji which she uses to tie up her hair. The writing on it changes depending on her current level of fortune.

As for her binding vow - she is able to access a large store of curse energy proportionate to a quota she must meet of either physical or mental pain - not damage itself, but pain. This curse energy store continues to grow exponentially with any additional pain she experiences.

In that state and only in that state, she has the capacity to use reverse healing technique. She can use it on herself, or another. Using it on herself has potential to reduce her pain and therefore cause her to lose curse energy.

There is also a “weapon summoning” element to Tomo’s technique. She is able to summon tools  that can channel her excess curse energy with the trade off being that /what/ she constructs is completely random. The items are objects related to an instance of misfortune in her past. For this reason, she trains frequently to be able to handle a wide variety of unorthodox weapons.

Early life :

Tomo was born into the extremely unlucky Yoshioka family, a long bloodline of non sorcerers whose abnormally frequent misfortune had the unassuming folk flagged by the Jujutsu world for centuries. Primarily this was because of the strong curses that the family produced.

Early deaths, bad business deals, destroyed homes, infidelity, illness, poverty, you name it and the Yoshioka’s have experienced it in multiples.

Tomo grew up listening to stories of an ancestor long ago betraying the leader of the clan that they served, earning themselves and all of their descendants a cursed existence.

These stories began to feel all too real when in her early teens Tomo began to see physical curses clinging to her parents following events like their house burning down or her father losing his job. Shortly after this began to occur, she was recruited to attend school at Tokyo Jujutsu high alongside Kento Nanami and Yu Haibara.

Prior to Jujutsu Kaisen

Upon her arrival to the school Tomo was not particularly social. Though she was happy to to find a way to make her misfortune useful, the young girl had become reserved from years of empathy fatigue and distrust from peers who were burned by her bad luck and self pity.

Time spent with her new classmates began to change this, though - Haibara’s sunny personality and optimism quickly drew her out of her shell. Most notably, he told her that turning bad luck into good luck is something that only she can do - so it’s a wonderful thing she should be proud of.

With help from the staff she found she could dampen the effects of her bad luck, and live life a bit more comfortably while also training hard to hone her body in preparation for whatever hits it may take.

It was fulfilling, helping people and finding ways to make her friends and family smile. She was truly happy.

Time passed like this until Haibara’s death shook her world. Struggling under the weight of her frustration at such a good person being lost, not to mention the unspoken romantic feelings she had always believed that there was more time to convey - Tomo was at a crossroads.

She had never been close to Nanami, his serious demeanor often meant he had no interest in her unlucky hijinks, but the two grieved for their friend, only sharing one conversation about it and eventually the mutual resolve to leave the Jujutsu world behind.

For Tomo - Haibara’s optimism left a stain on her soul that could not be erased. She saw the world falling apart around her and almost hysterically resolved to live with twice as much gusto as before to drown out the darkness in honor of her fallen comrade. She wanted to change course, follow her impulses and the things that sent her heart aflutter. She wasn’t aware that this was still just grieving, but of a different flavor.
