ABOUT

"I'm ready as I'll ever be."

Mel is extremely smart, but what often comes with that terrain is social ineptitude; he's incredibly anxious and awkward, particularly around strangers. Not to say that he isn't friendly, he just has a lot of trouble when it comes to navigating people. This has led him to become somewhat of a recluse and social outcast, preferring to be by himself than dealing with people in which he cannot predict. He tends to want control of situations, leaving him apprehensive toward situations in which he cannot totally be in charge. He has an affinity for alchemy and science, dedicating most of his time to performing experiments and indulging in conducting research because it fascinates him, to the vexation of his father; he wants to make him proud, but his father is not a good person and treats him pretty badly. Despite this, Mel spends a lot of time by himself cooped up in his room. Though, he does have friends, and cares for them a lot, willing to risk his own safety if it means protecting them. He is a pretty kind person, just fairly misaligned in his goals and morals, and has a distaste for dealig with most people.

DESIGN

m
  • he is part borzoi, so he tend ot draw his features really exaggerated, and part golden retriever, so he has long fur! in his infected form, his fur is really matted and unkempt.
  • in his infected form, spikes shoot out from his chest mostly, but they also appear on his face and his back- both as a human and a canine. he also has a constant nosebleed
  • pretty short in human form, like 5'3-4!! smaller than most if not all of his friends. canine form is similar.
  • the scarf is required when he's normal, he loses it when he's infected.

BACKGROUND

EARLY LIFE

Mel's childhood was relatively normal- he was still very shy and nervous as a child, his hobbies always much different than the other kids his age. He was almost always fascinated by the world around him, getting distracted by curiosity to his father's hatred. But his mother always loved Mel's intrigue and encouraged him to be love being smart despite his father wanting Mel to be tough and uncaring. Mel's mother paid for him to be enrolled in school (this caused a lot of fights between his parents), and he began to become interested in science from a young age, constantly striving to be smarter and smarter and impress his teachers. And then, all of a sudden, Mel's world came crashing down when his mother died- immediately, his father stopped paying for the prestigous school Mel was enrolled in, instead opting to take him and his two younger sisters, Tara and Twila, out of the city to live in a small, much cheaper village. The schooling there was free, but also incredibly poor. Most of the time Mel was not even able to attend due to being forced to help his father with his work or taking care of his sisters and the house. However, Mel did make a few friends, and they became his main source of joy in life. As time went on, Mel's father became less overbearing and cared about him less and less, and they were able to hire someone to take care of his little sisters, meaning Mel was able to attend school as he pleased and actually have free time. He made more friends, and even though he did not feel challeneged by this far less impressive school in the village, at least he was learning. He spent a lot of time at others' houses, but also in the shed behind his house, conducting his own experiments and playing around with alchemy.

CURRENT LIFE

When a new person, Hiro, moved into Mel's village, his world began to change oncemore. He ran into the other dog on his way to school some time, the other coming back from Church- he became fascinated with Hiro for no explainable reason, interested in him as both a friend and even perhaps romantically. The two got along well, Hiro's mother being so kind to him and Hiro being incredibly close to him, though they tip-toed around a relationship for quite a long time. In the midst of their situationship, Mel also stumbled across a raccoon named Atticus who was capable of speech. He spends a lot of time with Atticus, interested in how she knows so much about the world and science- Atticus tempts him into creating something she shouldn't have: a demonic disease, long thought dead by most scholars, though she claims it is merely just a fun creation experiment to test Mel's mind. The Black Ice infects Mel without him even realizing it, and he begins to change. He becomes sicker, hostile, cold, and agitated, and spikes begin to take over his body, breaking his skin from within his chest as it surrounds his heart. His friends and Hiro are concerned for him, and Mel becomes too sick to go to school or hang out with them like normal, eventually fleeing into the woods as the ice slowly changes him into a beast. He leaves Atticus behind, who seeks out Mel's friends in a panic- she had not realized what the disease would do to him, instead hoping what would happen is that it would help her find a way back into the demon plane, for she is actually a demon posessing a raccoon. The group puts aside their differences in hopes of saving Mel, and with Atticus' instruction and Hiro's love, cure him.

RELATIONSHIPS

Mel's first true friend, she has been there for Mel since the day he moved into the village, and he considers her his childhood best friend. Artemis is incredibly protective and cares for Mel deeply, and he sees her almost like the big sister he never had. Even though his mother never got to meet her, he knows she would love Artemis and be thankful that someone cares about Mel in the way that she does. She's very motherly toward his younger sisters and helped him out a lot when he was the main one caring for them and the house. Mel feels like he can trust Artemis with anything, and when he realized he was falling ill and spikes began to break his skin, she was the first one he told despite not understanding where the issue came from. He never told her about Atticus, in fear of being judged or her not trusting his new friend, but in hindsight he definitely should have. Artemis has a strong sense of when something might go wrong, and if he would've told her, perhaps she could've prevented the distress he went through. Nevertheless, she is incredibly important to Mel, and he is so grateful to have her at his side.

Pengi is Mel's best friend, and also the only person he deems as smart as him (though he will never admit it out loud, perhaps even smarter). The two grew close relatively fast on account of both being way too smart for the shitty little village school they found themselves in. Mel sees Pengi as sort of a moral compass or guide in life, always going to Pengi when he has issues and trusting Pengi to know what to do in tough scenarios. Pengi is a rather judgemental person though, so Mel tends to stray away from him when it comes to anything dealing with emotions. He is also somewhat of the reason Pengi and Artemis are dating, as he introduced the two to one another and helped Pengi confess his crush on her when he was floundering about. Mel actually spends most of his time with him and at his house to escape his own home. Pengi will often let Mel conduct alchemy experiments in his home, and since his parents are usually not around, they have free reign of the place.

Mel has never felt anything quite like he feels for Hiro. When he was younger, his mother never pressured him to be into people romantically, so he never really worried about relationships all that much. He never found interest in anyone like that, far too busy or focused on his scientific career. But quite literally running into Hiro one day changed Mel's view on that entirely; at first, he had no idea what this feeling toward Hiro was- until Pengi and Artemis explained it to him. Embarassed, but interested, he spent more and more time with Hiro, and the two were very affectionate, but never really defined what they were. After meeting Atticus though, Mel began to drift away from being interested in Hiro in favor of delving back into his scientific endeavors... which complicated things, because he definitely still liked Hiro, but was totally giving mixed signals. Eventually, Hiro ends up being the one to save his life from being a wreckless beast at the hands of the Black Ice, and they end up being in a committed relationship after that. Things can be awkward at times, particularly with Mel's inexperience in relationships and how he struggles with romance, but Hiro loves him for all his faults and is there for him through everything. Hiro's mom is supportive of their relationship, which means a lot because Mel's dad certainly wouldn't be and they have to hide it from him. Mel loves Hiro so much, and can't imagine a world where he isn't with him.

Crayons and Mel's relationship is a bit... odd. While close, Crayons is a bit obsessive when it comes to Mel, and this has caused Mel to pull back a little. He loves Crayons, he really does, but it was getting pretty bad and it made him somewhat uncomfortable, especially when Mel made it clear he was not interested in a relationship with him. Since Crayons found a relationship in Hunter, he has been less obsessive over Mel, but Mel knows he still holds that in his heart and doesn't particularly like Hiro all that much due to 'stealing' Mel from him. Mel tries his best to ignore Crayons' red flags, because Crayons is genuinely a nice person and cares a lot not just about Mel but Mel's sisters and other friends. He's a fragile individual and Mel tries his best not to accidentally leave wounds with his words, and he does genuinely enjoy Crayons' company as a friend.

Hunter and Mel aren't exactly friends, per se. For quite a bit, Hunter would casually bully Mel just to get a rise out of him and his friends. But a bit lonely and isolated, he would hang around them on occasion just because he needed friendship, just wasn't sure how to make it. Mel has never really liked Hunter. Not dislike either, he just felt rather neutral about the strange guy that would hang around them and occasionally pick on him. Soon enough, he was just always there. He had had a relationship with Artemis in the past, but really just seemed interested in occasionally flirting with her than actually pursing her again. Crayons is his worst victim for a while, but Hunter takes pity on him and they begin to grow a bit closer, particularly when Mel and Hiro become close. Now, it's really just per usual that Hunter is around. Mel thinks he isn't all that bad of a guy, just struggling in life, andneeds to find his place.

Atticus is not evil. She never meant to hurt Mel- merely tried to manipulate him into helping her return to the demon plane in which she belongs without giving away her true self. Untrusting of individuals in this world, she lied to Mel about herself and her origins in hopes of infecting him with the Black Ice, which would make him susceptible to her influence, therefore making her able to control him and have him help her return home. Little did she know that if she had just asked for help, he would've given it to her. Instead, the Black Ice wounds Mel and turns him into a beast, which she did not expect to happen, and she panics and runs to his friends to help save him. She grew to be fond of Mel, but by the time this happened, he was already infected. Mel can't possibly hate her knowing that all she was trying to do was get home, but he does stay mad at her for a very long time even after everything is said and done. Despite this, he does want to help her after everything, and continues to research ways that could get her home. Their relationship is just a complicated and strained one, that's all.

TRIVIA

  • Mel's mother was a scientist before Mel was born, but had to give up the life because of getting pregnant with him. She tried to push as much of the inspiration for science that she had when she was younger onto Mel, hoping that he too would love it and do great things. But funny enough, he nearly met her same fate. She was killed by the Black Ice, becoming infected with it back in her lab days, it laying dormant within her until she and Mel's father began to be unhappy with one another. It's eventually what killed her. Mel doesn't know this or remember her death all that well.
  • The Black Ice is not a traditional diease. Stemming from the demon realm, it feasts off of negative energy. It gets worse with a person's mental health becoming worse, which causes a feedback loop of the infection causing mental and physical health to deteriorate. The way to combat it is by experiencing love and kindness, and being filled with so much of it that it wilts away the disease. The affection that Hiro and his friends gave Mel even in his beast form is what caused the disease to die within him.
  • His voice claim has changed a couple of times, but it's currently Varian from Tangled: The Series! They are also similar in personality and both alchemists.
