gender: transmasc, gnc

A shy and awkward sort of character, Louis much prefers the company of cats over people. He's wary of strangers and has a nervous disposition, but is eager to ramble when cats or art is brought up. He's rather passionate about his interests and is actually very quick-witted and smart, though somewhat gullible. While affectionate towards the right people, he may still be quick to bolt when feeling threatened. He's a bit of a scaredy-cat, if you will. Vulnerability's not his thing. While he may be somewhat eccentric, Louis has a nuturing personality and is kind and sensitive at heart. He is modest and gentle.

Design Notes:
  • Louis' hair roughly mimics the appearance of cat ears, cheek fluff, and a tail. It is often messy and spikes up a lot. His hair also isn't a solid color: the roots are darker and slightly warmer, while the tips are a lighter, more yellow-ish shade of orange. He also has a stubble and sparse mustache that bear vague resemblance to whiskers.
  • He is a no-op gnc transmasc! He can be drawn with a small or flat chest. He wears androdgynous, slightly masc-leaning fashion. Big fan of looser, comfortable clothing, especially sweaters. Likes warm colors, fun patterns, florals, and, most of all, anything cat related. He knits a lot of his own sweaters and thrifts the rest. He dresses fairly modestly and doesn't wear shorts or short-skirts often, but enjoys an occational long skirt or dress. There's a fashion section in his pinterest board linked in the first tab!
  • He has a nervous habit of picking at his skin, so he has some acne and other red spots and marks. They're not super obvious with all his freckles, though. He also has a mole under his lip.
  • He's somewhat short, standing at about 5'3.
Misc. Notes:
  • Louis' ability allows him to temporarily borrow the vision and senses of any domestic cat as long as it is not further than roughly three miles away. If he has an emotional bond, his ability to connect is even stronger, and is also easier the closer the cat is. In some instances, he can tap into other senses like smell and hearing, but his access is less stable. While using the ability, he becomes somewhat detached from his body, and this dissociation worsens the longer his skill is active. Often times, when coming back after using it, he may feel disoriented and strange.
  • Catland only applies to domestic cats as a species, and does not seem to extend to other felines. As a sensory class ability, it is not particularly useful in combat, but can be good for scouting.
  • A chronic insomniac and subjected to frequent nightmares, Louis spends many restless hours awake at night. He is typically weary during the day and struggles with fatigue and chronic migraines. He has narcolepsy and naps frequently during the day, often at random times and in weird positions. He also has bouts of paranoia and psychotic episodes. He has ocd. He is also autistic and his favorite stim is meowing!!!!
  • In addition to painting, his hobbies include knitting and other yarn or thread crafts. He also fosters kittens (he knits little sweaters for them).
Trivia:
  • Louis Wain is, in bungo stray dogs fashion, inspired by the real painter of the same name as well as his works. They are nowhere near equivalent however and should not be viewed as such. His ability, dubbed "catland" is a reference to the collection of the real Wain's art under the same title.
  • The quote at the top of his bio is a reference to one of my favorite pieces by the real Wain. :)
  • Though he makes some money off of his art doing pet portraits and other commissioned work, he also does odd-jobs like gardening or working at bookstores.
  • His birthday is August 5.
Likes:

Dislikes:

  • the dark, also loud noises
youth and teenage years:

Louis was a shy child who grew up in the countryside with his parents. He had an innate curiosity for the natural world and enjoyed being outdoors, fascinated by the farm and it's animals. Despite his friendliness with the barn cats, Louis struggled greatly with socialization, and was essentially mute for the first several years of his life. His only spoken sounds were screams of terror, as he was plagued by terrible nightmares and had a severe fear of the dark. He was unable to attend school due to his fatigue and, later, his reccurant illness. Bed-bound for weeks at a time, Louis always seemed to grow very distant in those times. Unbenownst to his parents, he had learned, through his mother's cat that was a near-constant bedside companion, to use his ability. He would lay motionless for hours or even days, exploring the world through a cat's eyes. He struggled controlling it at first -- sometimes, he would get trapped in the feline's mind, unable to return to his own body. Once he did, he came back shaken and confused. Doctors were baffled and no diagnosis was ever made.

Eventually, Louis's health improved and he gained better control over his ability. He stopped using it for some time and grew strong enough to start homeschooling. He started speaking but still had a nervous and reserved disposition, his closest attachment still being to his mother's cat. He developed an interest in art early on, and the little orange tabby was his favorite muse. When his parents started to have marital troubles a few years later, he started using his ability again as a form of escapism, and became reliant on it. Eventually, his parents parted ways, around the same time his little tabby companion passed away. After encountering some financial troubles, Louis moved countries with his mother.

adulthood:

He eventually got his own apartment. He hated the city, but it was all he could afford. And it was his own. By then, he had also made some discoveries about his own gender and identity, and was finally taking steps to be his authentic self. Though living alone, he still has a connection with his mother and visits her at times. Illness runs in his family, so she is often sick -- he sends her what little money he can through the odd jobs he does. He struggles with finding work due to his fatigue and other maladies, but likes outdoor work and work with animals. At some point, he started working some of the land on the farm of a woman named Laura, who he became friends with. They run a trap-neuter-release program for local strays.
