ABOUT

Garin is a fiercely independent runaway with a disregard for adults and authority and powers that allow him to manipulate rocks and earth. Unfortunately, the discovery of his powers was met with less than enthusiasm by his mother, who frantically began to seek ways to rid him of his powers; their relationship became progressively worse as a result, until he eventually ran away from home.

Having been fending for himself since, Garin is clever, tough, determined and resourceful; he’s quite skilled at using his powers, often relying on them to get by. He’s also aggressive, arrogant and ruthless, however, freely using his powers to get whatever he needs or wants, not caring about who gets hurt in the process. When in control, he has a posture of cocky, nonchalant confidence, but when flustered he can quickly become hot-headed and volatile.

He hates appearing vulnerable, covering up his feelings with snark or anger, and believes he can trust and rely on no one but himself; his trust is slow and hard to earn, and he's quick to perceive a disagreement as aggression or betrayal. Having grown bitter and resentful against the world for shunning people like him, he’s decided that if others choose to see him as a monster, he’ll be happy to play the part.

But for all his bravado, Garin has low self esteem, and is a pretty lonely kid underneath it all. Though deep down he longs for companionship, he believes he can't be loved for who he is, and fears letting people in and getting hurt. Because of this, he instead lashes out, acting carelessly destructive and telling himself he doesn’t need anyone, having been doing just fine on his own.

Trivia

Relationships

Melon [ Partners in Crime (briefly); Rivals/Enemies ]

Garin and Melon found kindred spirits in each other due to their similar personalities and mutual disregard for authority. At a point where Melon was especially frustrated with her overbearing father, she was dazzled by Garin’s self-sufficient and adult-free lifestyle, and they had a short-lived friendship where Garin showed her the joys of having no grown-ups to answer to.

It soon fell apart, however, and they had a fight; now with a grudge, Garin became intent on causing trouble for Melon and her friends, while Melon was left shaken by the realization that he was far more skilled with his powers than she was, driven to become stronger. This led to a big fight between the two that ended with Garin cracking Melon’s gem, which unleashed a power Melon didn’t know she had - and didn’t know how to control, nearly going too far until Lilly and Snap pulled her out of it.

Despite it being buried under their current mutual animosity and hostility, deep down they still hold some respect for one another - though neither would be willing to admit it.

Yarrow [ Best Friends (as children); It's Complicated ]

Garin and Yarrow were best friends as younger children, before Garin had any powers; he was very protective of Yarrow, often picking fights with his bullies. After an accident with Yarrow's powers left Garin burned and Yarrow unwilling to ever use his powers again, Garin's mother had them move elsewhere, while Yarrow was left without knowing what happened to him, and they didn’t see each other since.

As Lilly and the others tried to keep Yarrow in the dark of their troubles with Garin at first, unaware they knew each other and wanting to give Yarrow space to grieve and heal, it took a while for them to meet again in the present. But as Garin caught sight of Yarrow after retreating from his and Melon’s big fight, he made himself known not long after, hopeful that Yarrow would join his side, as both were shunned for their powers.

Having just started to come to terms with his powers, Yarrow turns him down, not wanting to use them for actions he thinks are wrong; instead, he offers for Garin to join them, wanting to give him a chance of a better life. Garin doesn’t take it well, however, seeing it as Yarrow choosing his new friends over him and having his last shred of trust broken. Feeling betrayed and alone, Garin lashes out, now seeing Yarrow as his enemy; after a one-sided fight, he runs off, leaving behind a rift between them.

The current status of their relationship is turbulent and heavy with resentment and regret, but ultimately they still deeply care for one another, though Yarrow is unsure on how to reach out and Garin won’t admit it even to himself.
