Information

"There is nothing to be afraid of in flying," Agnes explained with a comforting voice. "We have been created to fly, it all comes very naturally to us, so don't think about it too much." She then took a look at Cau and grinned: "And if you were to fall, you can trust me to catch you!"

A graceful and experienced postman, Agnes is one of the best mail delivers in her area, resulting in her being the leader (and an older sister figure) to all new postmen that come to her district. She is very precise and careful with her work but not above using oftentimes strange and even questionable methods to reach her goals - delivering mail in time and to the right address is a thing of pride to her; a goal that must be reached even if that meant bending or breaking the rules a little.

Agnes can be a little strict during work due to her pride and discipline for what she does, but especially outside of work she is rather easygoing and relaxed, more impulsive than calculative by nature.  She loves to gently tease people and enjoys telling wild and completely imagined tales to her juniors as a way to mess with them a little. However, Agnes never means ill and knows not to cross the line, and her stories are often outlandish enough most people take them with a grain of salt anyway.

She is someone who is highly respected by her peers and subordinates, but who isn’t afraid to show her more playful and gentler side to others. However, make no mistake: Agnes is still a demanding leader that expects her subordinates to do their very hardest.

Big sister to Cau, although the two are adopted. Is also affiliated with Karen and Hannes.

Personality

Years of experience in her job has taught Agnes how to behave and present herself in front of others: especially at work she is graceful and patient as well as demanding but not too bossy, keeping her subordinates motivated but not on their toes around her. However, underneath her work presentation of polite and careful words and gestures is an adventurer at heart: Agnes is always up for new missions and challenges in her work especially, which is understandable given she has very little free time on her own. While comfortable with the idea of stability, Agnes still very much prefers change and is eager to shake things up a little to ward off dullness and boredom.

People oriented but not naturally a talented conversationalist, Agnes has worked hard on her skills with people, but she is still better at doing things and showing them rather than expressing things with words. And although very kind by nature, Agnes isn’t necessarily always very in-tune with other people and might misunderstand their actions or is incapable of seeing the reasoning behind people’s actions. This might lead her to be more harsh and judgmental than she would like to be, but usually explaining the situation to her clearly is often enough to make her understand better. Her job has made her good at small talk and casual chit chat, but she often doesn’t let out much about herself, preferring to stand behind her work persona. The only exceptions are usually keykeepers whom Agnes has a much warmer relationship with, although now during her older years she can’t deliver mail to them as often as she’d like to - rather, it’s usually Cau who gets the honor to do so.

Listening is, perhaps surprisingly, one of Agnes’ best qualities: more often than not she doesn’t have anything comforting to say, but she is genuinely interested in other people and what they have on their hearts, and prefers it when people talk about their feelings to each other.  However, ironically Agnes herself doesn’t always know how to talk about her feelings or worries especially due to her position as a leader: she doesn’t want to show weakness to her subordinates in the fear of it affecting them as well, and Agnes is often far too busy with her work and duties to talk to other higher-ups either. This can create unnecessary tension and anxiety in her, which in turn might result in her being a little too demanding of others and herself.

Towards her family she is very loving and supportive, and even her subordinates often get a piece of her familial love: Agnes’ unit is like one big family, and whenever possible, she likes to take her group to eat or do something fun together - as long as they have gotten their work done first. She makes acquaintances relatively easily and has definitely worked on her charisma, but Agnes’ actual inner circle of friends and family still remains quite small - and she doesn’t mind! She likes to tease people a little and might sometimes tell wild but completely made-up tales to scare the new mailmen, but it’s all for good fun, and usually at some point people realize they have been fooled or Agnes herself comes out clean by herself. Sometimes this might annoy people, but generally she is aware of her limits and rarely gets out of her lane with others.

Agnes has her own moral compass she follows, and this doesn’t always sit well within the rules and laws. However, she tries her best to bend and break the rules so that it doesn’t cause too much trouble to other people. She believes the end goal is usually more important than the means of achieving it, as long as they don’t go too terribly against her own set of morals and ideals. She isn’t very good at talking herself out of these sort of situations though, and whenever she ends up breaking rules she very willingly submits herself and takes responsibility of her actions - a foolish or a very admirable quality depending on who you ask.

History

Agnes was born to unknown parents and sent to an orphanage at the age of one, resulting in her having no memories of her biological parents or life before orphanage whatsoever. She was taken in by a keykeeper woman called Agatha at the age of 5. The two of them lived right next to a lighthouse, although they spent their days mostly in the lighthouse during the dark seasons to operate the place. Agnes never consider the keykeeper who adopted her as mother, and instead would refer to Agatha as teacher instead. Their relationship indeed was more like a teacher and student in the way she taught Agnes all sort of things, but they had a familial and loving relationship regardless. The two of them spent a lot time together but Agatha made sure to make Agnes familiar with humans and demons alike and would oftentimes let Agnes sit in the same room as where she was running her business. She became well known by the nearby village and would visit the people often.

Agnes learned to fly at the age of 13 when her wings were large and strong enough to carry her body, and from then on she would fly around the lighthouse and eventually start following nearby ships, many of whose sailors she got to know well. Agnes was a cheerful and adventurous youngster, a little mischievous but tender hearted and kind to those around her. To use her wings that constantly ached to be used, Agnes decided to start delivering mail first between the lighthouse and the village, eventually moving to longer distances within nearby villages and towns - but never too far away from home.

Agnes got a little brother when she was 16, when Agatha one day returned home from her long trip carrying a small boy with her. Another winged one, the boy was adopted and named Cau, but very little was known about his past, and the young boy didn’t want to speak about it. He was initially very passive and introverted, but eventually warmed up to his new family and became very close with Agnes. A new family member felt weird for Agnes who had spent almost her whole life together with her teacher, but was already mature enough to find a new little brother delightful. Agnes was initially the one who taught Cau fly when the boy was 11 and Agnes herself 19.

Through her teacher Agnes was eventually hired by the special mailmen unit, and in only three years she had become the top flyer and mail deliver of her unit. 10 years later Cau would follow in her footsteps and also join the unit, and eventually after years of service Agnes finally became the leader of her division, with the exception of one gap year she took from her work once Agatha died. During this year Agnes travelled by the sea to mourn and gather her thoughts, but returned back to her duties after this.

Nowadays she continues to work hard as a leader with a strict but loving guidance, much like how her teacher had raised Agnes.

Skills/ABILITIES

  • Agnes has no magic core of her own, but has trained to become quite an adept word magic user. Her ideal way of using this magic is through singing as this is the easiest way to remember hard and complex spells, and her nature as a bird person makes singing quite a natural way of doing magic. She has an affinity with wind and water, and although capable of other sort of magic too, her spells are more often than not related to her two main elements.

  • As a postman, Agnes is not tied to one place in particular - rather, she can freely travel through universes. However, she can only do this while on duty, and her ability is only to be used as a way to deliver letters.

  • Fast and precise at flying, Agnes reputation grew thanks to her fast and accurate deliveries.

  • Relatively good singer by human standards, but rather average when it comes to bird folk - they’re naturally talented singers.

  • Can tweet like a bird (black-naped tern)

  • Knows how to operate a lighthouse and knows the basics of light Morse coding as well as some flag warning signs

Trivia

  • Adopted older sister of Cau. The two of them are very close and love each other a lot, even though it might seem like Cau finds her annoying - it’s just a little brother thing.

  • Loves the sea and feels the most at ease when near a coast. In her mail delivering work she specializes in tracking down ships in order to deliver or receive letters from sailors and other seafarers.

  • Most of her made-up horror stories and other things to mess with people come from the sailors she often hanged out with as a child. Her imagination is surprisingly wild once she lets it run wild, and the influence of the sailors can sometimes be very apparent in the nature of her stories about sea monsters and the like.

  • Although her bird twittering sound is very high pitched, Agnes’ normal speaking voice is very low for a woman. She can be very loud when she just wants to be, but doesn’t raise her voice all that often thanks to the fact her subordinates generally try their hardest and don’t get into big trouble.

  • Agnes’ kind usually ages the way humans do but as a mailman she has been granted a much longer life span. However, she can be killed and eventually die of old age (the exact age is a mystery though), but if she retires from her work her physical ageing will continue from that moment on and she will have a normal life span.
