Sam is big, curious, loveable, and destructive. She often destroys things when trying to inspect them. She lives in the ocean, and can cover long distances quickly. She is clever, but more house-cat clever. She is mostly animal-like, eating fish and swimming around, and tormenting sailors.

Sam has a mostly horse-like upper body, with a long snout full of small sharp teeth, a long, thick neck, and two equine front legs that she uses to pull herself around on land or grab onto various things. She has a dark mask on her upper face, and a sensitive bare nose. Her eyes are small and white. Her ears are horse-like, and she has a fish hook stuck in her left ear. She also has two small, tan horns that point forward. Her main body is warm grey, with lighter grey patterns and spots across her body, like a leopard seal. She has dark legs and small, tough hooves. She often curls them into her body or "gallops" when swimming. She also has two small fins on her sides, and a long, dark tail with a light underside and a black tip. Her tail is similar in shape to a tiger shark's. Her bright orange crest, a trademark of her species, has a large spine connecting it to the back of her head. It is slightly flexible and acts as a display structure.
