About

Joel is a loud, outgoing, and sociable demon who loves to party! He loves to meet new people, try all sorts of new things, and is never one to back away from a challenge or a fight (even when things get physical). He loves to talk, tell stories, and is always making a joke or a sarcastic quip. He can get offensive with the things he says, but he doesn't care if he offends somebody; he actually thinks it's really funny when people get mad at him, so he just laughs at them and eggs them on. It can also be hard to tell whether Joel is being sarcastic or not when he talks. He can come off as a jerk, but he has a heart of gold and is a genuinely nice person when you get to know him.

Joel's quite promiscuous and loves to flirt. He enjoys the attention he receives because of his appearance. He enjoys wearing cute/revealing clothes, not caring if the things he wears are considered feminine. He is often mistaken for a girl, though he doesn't mind or care; any attention is good attention in Joel's mind. .

Backstory

Joel grew up in a very religious household, raised by cold and strict parents alongside his older sister, Leah. He was raised Catholic, and went to a Catholic school as well. His parents were emotionally abusive, and judgemental, hate-filled people who were not shy about imposing their bigoted views onto their children. Joel would never feel completely comfortable or secure while living with them.

Growing up, Joel was very shy and usually stuck to himself, despite wanting so deperately to make new friends. He managed to make a close few friends that he kept throughout the years, and he cherished these friends dearly, and was able to be himself around them. Joel had been forced to hide himself for most of his life as to not be ridiculed and degraded by his parents, and the support of his friends was a blessing to him. Joel was also extremely close with his sister Leah, and they always confided in and supported each other through their struggles. They considered each other best friends.

As a teenager, Joel learned to be much more sneaky. He would sneak out at night to go to parties, which is where he would first try drinking, as well as drugs. It was at this time that Joel was forced to face the fact that he was gay, something he desperately didn't want to accept or have to tell his parents about. Luckily, Leah and his friends accepted him with open arms, but he didn't dare say a word about it to his parents; he just knew he would be disowned if he did.

After graduating high school, Joel moved out of his parents house and into Leah's with her and her husband, as she had moved out and gotten married a few years prior. Things began to seem bright; now that he was in a more positive and supportive environment, Joel got a job as a pizza delivery driver, bought his own car (a used pickup truck), and later, dyed his hair dark red (all things his parents never would have let him do without a fight). Joel would still go out to parties late at night, but he had cut it back on the drinking and drugs, as he was no longer comfortable with how much he was using them before. He also didn't want to admit he had been using them to cope.

One night in the summer, Joel was sitting alone on the back porch, drinking a beer and thinking about life. The night was peaceful, with the only sounds being the crickets chirping. Joel didn't notice when the crickets fell silent, because he was too busy focusing on the sudden feeling he got that he was being watched. He ignored his gut screaming at him to just go inside, assuring himself he was just being paranoid for no reason. However, he noticed slight movement from the corner of his eye, and when he looked he saw a dark figure peering right around the corner of the house, staring at him. The figure quickly pulled back and disappeared, but Joel was too afraid to move or make a sound, his gaze fixed on where the stranger had just been.

He sat there for what felt like minutes, trying to gather the courage to stand and go inside. Still looking at where the dark figure had stood, Joel stood up to leave, but was caught by surprise when a hand suddenly clamped itself over his mouth from behind. He dropped his beer bottle, which shattered all over the ground. His assailant put a knife to his back and led him around the side of the house, before shoving him against the wall. In the dark, he could make out his attacker was a woman, but she was no human. She was some sort of creature, some sort of... monster. She had too many eyes, black eyes with white irises that stared him down like a predator stalking prey. She had two horns coming out of her head that looked sharp enough to skewer him, and a wicked, sharp-toothed smile she flashed him as she kept him pinned against the outer wall of his house. With her hand still clamped over his mouth, she traced her knife down his front, before abruptly stabbing him right below his chest. Joel tried to scream, but the attacker just held her hand tighter over his mouth and she dragged the knife down his body, right through his stomach and down to just above his groin. She removed her knife and let go of Joel, letting him crumple to the ground, weak from the pain and blood loss. At this point, he was too weak to even speak, only able to wheeze and cough up blood. The monster said something before she disappeared, but Joel couldn't make it out, as he was fading fast. Joel died that night, all alone, just out of sight and earshot of his sister and her husband.

...or at least, he thought he did. Just a few minutes later, Joel woke up on the ground, still feeling much pain on the front of his body. He sat up and noticed there was no blood anywhere, but his shirt was still ripped from where he had been stabbed. In that moment, Joel felt somewhat relieved, believing what he experienced was just a really bad trip, or even a nightmare. He decided not to worry in that moment about his nails that were now black, despite not having painted them recently. He didn't worry about the fact that his head felt heavier or that he could feel more than 2 eyes on his face when he blinked. He chalked it all up to taking some bad drugs earlier in the night and forgetting about it. That was the only reasonable explanation, he had just had a really bad trip, and he was content to believe he was just riding out a bad high... until he saw his reflection.

While walking back to the porch to go inside and call it a night, Joel passed by a window illuminated by the porch light. He yelped and jumped back when he saw what he thought was his attacker again, perhaps coming back to make sure he was dead. But when he saw the figure jump back as well, and Joel realized what he was looking at; himself. He couldn't quite believe what he was seeing. Just like the one who had attacked him, Joel had black horns protruding from his head, but he had 5, instead of the 2 that his attacker had. He also had 5 black eyes, with bright white irises that stared right back at him, and unnaturally sharp teeth and black nails. The illusion that it was all just a bad trip, or even a bad dream, broke in the moment. Joel began to panic; what was he supposed to do now? What happened to him? Was he dead now? What would his sister think?

Unable to think rationally, Joel chose to do what he thought was his only option: run away, and never look back. Joel entered the house as quietly as he could, stifling his panicked breathing as he packed some of the essentials. As Joel threw his bag into his truck, he thought about leaving a note, but he had no idea what to write and decided against it. When he got into the car, he hesitated, wanting nothing more than to run to his sister and have her tell him that it would all be okay. However, he couldn't bear to face her when he looked like this, afraid of how she and her husband would react. With a heavy heart and tears on his face, Joel drove away, never to return.

Thus Joel began living in hiding, never staying in one place too long. Joel lived out of his car for a while before ditching it in the woods, and took a liking to lurking around the city at night. He would discover many others like him in the city as well and begin to build connections and make a name for himself among his kind. This is also around the time that Joel would gain a penchant for breaking and entering, as well as stealing, since he could no longer waltz into stores to buy things. He found that he was quite good at sneaking around undetected.

Joel's personality would also begin to shift during this time as well. While he used to be quiet and timid, he would become loud, brash, and obnoxious, and he found that he didn't really mind. If this is how he had to live, he might as well make the most of it and go wild.

Joel met his new best friend Ainsley (aka Albie) one night when they both broke into the same supermarket at night, and instantly clicked. From then on, they were an inseperable duo who travelled and lived together. They always have each others backs and do everything together, and keep the other in check as well.

Currently, Joel and Albie spend their time and crash at the apartment of a gas station clerk named Kiana, who caught them one night when they broke into a gas station as she was opening up for the day. Luckily, Kiana is very into everything spooky, scary, and occult, so she invited them to her apartment to learn more about them. Her roommate Peter was much less enthusiastic though, and distrustful of the scary strangers now lingering in his home. Joel and Peter often butt heads because Joel enjoys annoying and teasing him. Joel and Kiana get along just fine, however.

It is while staying at the apartment that Joel and the gang meet Gentiana, a demon living in an apartment on the top floor that was thought to be long abandoned. Gentiana often joins the rest of them to hang out, and Joel and Albie often stay in her apartment with her as well. Gentiana is kind with a motherly personality, and is grateful to have company after being isolated for so long.

  • Joel's best friends are Albie and Gentiana.
  • Because of his species, Joel can't permanently die (when demons "die", they burst into a swarm of black butterflies, which eventually come back together and reform as the demon.)
  • Demons all have death scars, and Joel's death scar runs from right below his chest to just above his pubic area. He doesn't like looking at it.
  • Demons can fly/float, and Joel does it near constantly, so much so that he barely walks anymore, especially as to not dirty his socks lol
  • Joel isn't aware that the people of his species are called demons. When referring to others of his kind, he calls them "people like me," and clarifies by gesturing at his horns and eyes.
  • His hands are always cold.
  • He is a masochist.
  • His hair is dyed; his natural hair is dark brown.
  • Joel is almost always smiling, to the extent that it is unsettling. When he isn't smiling, however, he has the worst resting bitch face you have ever seen.
  • He's super messy when he cries since he's got 5 eyes to cry from.
  • He REALLY doesn't like anybody touching his horns; he thinks it feels very weird.
  • He doesn't sleep often, and when he does, it's for no more than 6 hours at a time. He's a very light sleeper.
  • He is extremely good at math.
  • His favorite colors are black, red, and green.
  • Joel steals most of what he wants or needs from stores at night. Sometimes, just for fun, he will walk into a store when it is still open to see what will happen.
  • Joel loves to explore, especially around creepy and/or abandoned places, and discovering every nook and cranny. He loves to break and enter.
  • His favorite foods are club sandwiches and chocolate chip cookies.
  • He prides himself on being fearless. The truth is that he is TERRIFIED of thunderstorms.
  • He jokes that he's a master of parkour, but isn't that cheating since he can fly?
  • He's a big sports fan. His favorite sport to watch is basketball, and his favorite sport to play is tennis.
  • Joel loves all things creepy and spooky. He adores horror movies and is crazy about Halloween.
  • He hates being told to do chores, but if he gets bored he'll naturally gravitate towards washing dishes and sweeping.
Albie best friend

Albie and Joel have been attached at the hip since they met. Joel thinks of her as an equal, though Albie thinks of Joel as a lovable (if sometimes annoying) little brother. Where one goes, the other will typically follow. They rely on each other more than they both realize, and keep each other sane.

Gentiana best friend

Joel and Gentiana have even more of a brother/sister relationship, or even mother/son relationship in a way. Gentiana is the mom friend making sure Joel doesn't get himself killed (lol), and Joel is willing to do anything for her; she's very caring, and reminds him a lot of his sister, and of the mother he wishes he had. He won't admit it, but he craves her praise and approval.

It runs in the family.
