SILAS KAINE YORK

ABOUT

PRONOUNS he/they

RACE/SPECIES Demi-angel

AGE 19

AGE RECRUITED 16

GENDER Male (transmasc)

ORIENTATION Bisexual

BIRTHDAY November 11

UNIVERSE Terra Incógnita

Band role:

Drummer, keyboardist, and minor lyricist. He’s great at singing but is self-conscious of his voice and prefers to stay in the background. Most of the weird sound effects within their songs (dial-tones, footsteps, clicking, etc.) are thanks to his synthesizer and his recent fascination with Lo-Fi. He also makes the band’s album covers.

MISC.

  • Has been reincarnated 3 times (though he doesn't remember of course)
  • His junk drawer is mainly filled with salt and pepper shakers and knives that he collects
  • One wall in his room is covered solely in polaroids, most of which are sky pics (ironic as his initials spell out SKY)
  • Scatters origami cranes around town with notes inside, though he can only make cranes
  • Draws on his shoes
  • Hoards Lego's under his bed, most of which are broken but they're all different modes of transportation (cars, trucks, planes, trains, etc.)
  • Doesn't have a single plain T-shirt. Most are band tees and weird button-downs from his dad
  • Yes, he's on testosterone but he uses the gel since he finds needs unbearable. How he sat through his nose piercing? Who knows
  • His hair grows really fast
  • Awesome at roller skating
  • Has a crush on Ambrosia, who bleached half of his hair when he was passed out at her place once but now he continues to bleach it
  • Yes, he's one of those kids who carries around drumsticks and bangs on everything

DESIGN NOTES

  • He has wings! However, they appear randomly and when they do, they rip holes in his shirts
  • Eyes periodically show up on other parts of his body, usually his arms. They always glow yellow but this is why he's usually only seen in long sleeves.
  • Whenever his wings show up, extra pairs of eyes do too. Every eye (including his normal pair) glow yellow
  • It's rare you'll ever see them, but he has top surgery scars, as he got surgery in early high school.
  • He always wears topaz necklace (his birthstone)
  • The left side of his hair is always lighter than the right since he's continuously been bleaching it
  • Has a super cute lil' mole under his left eye

BIO NOTES

Silas was previously reincarnated three times as a human and in his third life, became the product of his father, a human, and his mother, a Cherubim. His parents had fooled around for ages before going too far, and while his mother was aware of the true issue behind their new son, she kept it secret from his father.

For a few years, the two attempted to raise him but his mom, ashamed of her mistake, ran off, only reappearing for birthdays. However, she never learned her lesson, and Silas unknowingly has a few younger half-siblings thanks to her misdeeds.

None of Silas’ “angelic” traits showed up until he was a teenager. His band members convinced him to sing one of the songs he wrote on a whim during one of their concerts. His song closed out the performance, but he got insanely invested, and by the end, his wings broke out, though most people thought it was part of the show. Despite the audience begging for an encore, Silas ran out of the venue, panicked and confused.

From that day forward, extra pairs of eyes appear on his arms, which is why he carries around spare sweaters and cardigans. His wings, along with extra eyes and his regular eyes glowing yellow, would only happen during heightened emotions such as embarrassment, fear, anger, or excitement. He can’t control it, and they don’t always occur together. Though, whenever his wings sprout, he has an awful time trying to get them to go away. He can’t fly too well either—he’s tried, but just when he thinks he’s getting the hang of it, he always crash lands.

It took ages for him to tell anyone or for them to find out. Silas’ dad, Malik, promised he’d attend his son’s first big concert but got distracted by his work and never saw the transformation. Despite the resentment towards his dad, Silas brushed off the whole angel thing for a while until the traits showed up more often. He would awkwardly distance himself, stay inside practicing in his garage, never stick around after rehearsals, or even decline invitations to events he could always attend.

Malik didn’t know what to do, and with no one else to turn to, contacted Trinity, his wife, to hopefully aid in their son’s odd behavior. However, Trinity’s sudden appearance and overstaying her welcome just riled him up more. Still, he managed to keep up the facade and claimed his behavior was about his dad missing his concert months prior. Once everyone talked it through, Trinity flew out of state to where she was previously, even though she presumed Malik’s call was about Silas acting weird due to his angelic traits. Yet, she shrugged it off and returned to her single life, only for Silas to suddenly transform in front of his dad weeks later. The two tried to contact her, but she went MIA after leaving Delaware again for at least a month before reappearing to share her secrets.

Instead of growing more content with the trait, Silas just keeps growing more conflicted over the truth about his mother. He’s still very self-conscious and his bandmates are his only friends that know. However, they just ended up finding out as he never actually told them. Some of the songs in Zero Buoyancy are references to Silas possibly living a double life, which Nile had been skeptical about since the concert which he refused to elaborate about to anyone.

RELATIONSHIPS

TRINITY YORK Mom

MALIK YORK Dad

AMBROSIA WILLIAMS Best friend and crush

NILE DELMAR Good friend

TALON REINHARDT Good friend

As stated previously, Silas has been reincarnated 3 times. Each time he was born a guy until his current life where he was born a girl and eventually transitioned to a man. Though he doesn’t remember, in his second life, he was friends with Ambrosia. His name at the time was Skye and though he died in an accident when he was 3, he had been best friends with Amber since birth. Nowadays, whenever he’s around her, he gets this deja vu feeling.

When Silas first joined the band, the two quickly became friends, but he eventually got a crush on her too. He’s yet to tell her because if she says no, he’s afraid it’ll mess up the chemistry of the band and that they might even stop being friends. He doesn’t want to make things awkward, and he also believes that she wouldn’t date him due to the 3-year age gap. She’s already in college and is around plenty of people who act like adults, and assumes she would feel weird dating a kid although he’s past 18.

He’s also worried that she might be weirded out after learning he was born female, despite how much variety is already in the band (Nile is gay yet closeted, and Talon is gender-fluid).

BAND INFO

Grilled Rice was originally formed by Nile and Talon in their junior year of high school. At first, they only played instrumentals despite Nile’s notebooks of potential song lyrics. Most of their gigs took place at a small coffeehouse, and Amber, one of the employees, eventually joined them as their lead singer a few months after the band originated. After about a year of playing together, Talon said they were tired of the drums and wanted to put their guitar lessons to use, but no one could take their place.

Nile went on the search for a potential candidate in their senior year and found Silas in the band room after school. The four have been joined at the hip ever since, although Amber was already in college. Nile and Talon eventually got into Wilmington University (Springfield), and after graduating high school, Silas enrolled at DCAD (Delaware College of Art and Design), where Amber is.

FYI: The band members are around ages 40 or 50 present-day! However, their primary story takes place during the 80s and 90s, so you'll always see them drawn as kids or young adults. More notes will be added to this section in due-time.

DISCOGRAPHY

GRILLED RICE

Flip

1992

Given that this was the first album, it was in the works for a while. Though Nile and Talon were the only members at the time, everyone still wanted it in the overall discography. There are 7 songs, and while most are instrumental, those with words are sung by Nile. Kyle, Nile’s older brother, took the photo one afternoon. They were still in high school, hence Nile’s long hair and overabundance of acne and Talon’s more feminine presentation.

BAD RECEPTION

Flip

1993

Unbeknownst to most, this is their most disorganized album. Between Silas being a new recruit, Talon and Nile prioritizing college applications and graduation requirements, and Ambrosia trying to rework some of their older, unreleased songs, rehearsals were often a mess. Some months were flawless, whereas others were touch-and-go, only to find that not stressing about production led to a better product.

There are 10 tracks, most of which are chill, and unlike their other albums, the songs go together. It was the single instance where someone wrote the first song, and everyone else tried to write something similar. While Ambrosia wrote most of the songs, Silas helped name many. Kyle took the photo at Dewey Beach, where he normally resides, and the dress code was a waistcoat with unrelated bottoms of your choice.

IN THE MEANTIME

Flip

1995

Most fans feel this is where they perfected their sound hence this being the most popular album. It took about a year to complete, but the upbeat nature and Silas singing solo throughout the last track boosted popularity. Silas usually hid in the back playing drums, and since he’s the youngest face and newest edition, people loved seeing him centerstage.

He performed the same song at his high school when his wings appeared (which likely boosted ratings since fans got clips or photos of the transformation). It was technically a demo, likely to take place on a future album, but they added it as a bonus, making the track count 11 instead of 10. "Plastic-Covered Couches" is the only slow song.

ZERO BUYOANCY

Flip

1996

Nile practices many original songs on his own with themes he doesn’t want to force others to work around, such as his ex-boyfriends, family problems, or unattainable love interests (Silas). His vent lyrics are written in a way that’s hard to grasp the overall issue, but when the members realized he was writing on the side, they recommended he make his first solo album. Even if he didn’t want them in his business, they didn’t want his talents to go unnoticed.

He was reluctant until Silas happened to catch him singing after their rehearsals ended and thought everyone had left the band room. Despite his embarrassment, he was flattered by his friend’s compliments and figured he might as well release some. Nile usually merges vocals with Ambrosia, so people loved hearing him by himself.

And though the cover photo seems like it’s trying to be edgy, Nile was black-out drunk, and yes, his glasses were actually recently broken. He and the others were invited to a party, and Talon and Silas found him in the bathtub at the end of the night. Out of the 14 songs, half are acoustic, and all are surprisingly vulgar. Despite being released in 1996, many songs are refined drafts of old songs dating back to 1992.

Songs in orange are directed at Silas, but Nile is really the only one who knows...since he wrote them and all. They either allude towards him possibly being an angel, or just the massive crush Nile has on him. Sometimes both.

THE PROMENADE

Flip

1997

Silas had a burst of determination and decided that he’d finally confess to Amber during his senior year, and the easiest way would be asking her to be his prom date. While she was happy to join him, she didn’t get the subtext, and Silas quickly got embarrassed, freaked out, and decided to invite the rest of their friends too. Since the rest of the band members were under 21 and had previously attended the school, getting tickets was effortless.

While making it a group outing was a coverup, Silas’ classmates got the drift: He and Amber were the only ones in the group with corsages and matching outfits. Nonetheless, Silas basks in the joy of being able to dance with his crush for 4 hours, even if he never confessed. The 9 songs sound like a mixture of 80s disco and rock. Most reference the night itself, although many were afterthoughts since Silas attended prom in 1996.

Nile and Talon were the last kids on the dancefloor (1), 15 minutes in and one of Silas’ classmates was already drunk (2), some schnapps was secretly passed around during the dance, and was found under a table at the end of the night (3), there was only one planned slow dance so everyone started randomly slow dance to the upbeat songs since the DJ was oblivious (5), Talon brought hundreds of glow sticks and shared them with Silas’ graduating class (6), and since Silas was graduating in a few weeks, they declared it was the end of an era now that all, including him, were adults (9).
