Profile

Physical Appearance

  • Medium-length chocolate brown hair
  • Blue eyes
  • Medium in height
  • Relatively fit with a somewhat scrappy build
  • Fair skinned
  • Usually wears contacts for his farsightedness but sometimes wears glasses

Clothing Style

Clay tends to dress for the cool weather that almost always engulfs the dreary city of Dyrelaw. He almost exclusively wears long sleeved tops and pants, and he usually wears vests and jackets on top. He strikes a balance between mildly professional and casual, and his style resembles something of very mild hipster fashion, more so when off the clock. He likes wearing either scarves or ties depending on what type of shirt he's wearing. He also tends to have a lot of methods of carrying things, such as his messenger bag, various pockets on his clothes, some pouches on his belts, and whatnot.

His most common outfit while out in the field includes a blue sweater vest (or a full sweater if it's particularly cold) over a white long sleeved button up collared shirt with a dark blue tie. He usually wears a dark gray jacket outdoors (with sleeves usually rolled up to elbows if the weather is fair enough), and sometimes he'll wear a scarf along with it depending how cold it is outside. He'll usually have with him or wear white gloves, especially if he needs to handle artifacts of his research. He also usually wears khakis or brown slacks with loafers or dress shoes. His socks are usually blue and sometimes patterned.

He will sometimes wear glasses, and he almost always has his camera worn around neck and a leather messenger bag with him. He usually has a belt with extra pouches to hold things, and sometimes he'll have another belt and pouch around his leg. He'll also frequently wear a blue newsboy style cap when outside. Later on he is gifted some dog tags and he rarely takes them off.

Personality

Clay is an inquisitive and curious photographer and journalist who is always dead-set on finding his scoop. When working on his article or taking photos, he is very confident and headstrong, and most people note that he is rather nosy and pushy about getting to the bottom of things when he suspects there's a story worth uncovering. He can be a bit opportunistic and is in-your-face about asking questions, which can make him rather annoying to anyone involved with him for extended periods of time if they're not cooperative. Clay doesn't have problems taking risks to get his scoop or get the perfect shot with his camera, but he can often be a bit reckless in his passionate pursuit of his story and usually ends up getting himself into trouble. Although he is a very clever and resourceful man with great intuition about how to get what he's looking for, he gets very flustered if he winds up in a violent situation, and despite the fact he can handle argumentative people just fine, he tends to panic when legitimately threatened. He's not scared or deeply affected by morbid things if he's reporting on them, but he doesn't handle actually being in danger very well and usually freezes up in situations where he should run or defend himself. He's not a violent person in the slightest despite usually reporting on violent crimes, and he has a lot of trouble acting in self defense since he usually can't bring himself to hurt other people.

Clay comes off as a rather quirky character that most people either love or hate. For some his positivity and enthusiasm is contagious, but for others it's incredibly annoying. He seems a little too dedicated to his job at times and rarely goes "off duty" in terms of his personality. He tends to be fast talking, witty, and a bit sassy when talking to others, and he never lets anyone talk him out of getting what he wants. He also has a very particular way of doing various tasks, and he rarely does things differently than what he's used to. Although he's willing to try new things and take risks, in terms of things he already knows how to do he sometimes has trouble with change. Clay tends to do certain tasks in ways he's familiar with even if there's a more efficient way to do them, especially if it's something he can do in the privacy of his home office. When by himself, Clay is much more subdued and lower energy, and he rarely lets anyone see him when he's at home winding down. Being with him on a very personal and private level makes him much more quiet and coy, and he doesn't like to let other people know too much about him. He gets rather defensive and flustered when asked personal questions, and he seems to be a bit nervous about letting people know him in great detail despite how much detail he puts into his work involving other people.

  • Has the uncanny ability to be in the right place at the right time (which can easily turn into the wrong place at the wrong time)
  • Highly skilled at photography and noticing the tiniest of details in even the messiest of surroundings
  • Eloquent and highly literate, making him skilled at reading, writing, editing, and research

  • Observant, instinctual, and has keen intuition
  • Clever, eloquent with his journalism, meticulous, and creative

Weaknesses

  • Nosy, pushy, and way too curious
  • Easily flustered when outside of his comfort zone and emotionally crumbles when in danger
  • Stubborn, difficult to talk out of things, and tends to prioritize his work over his own safety or health
  • Gets into trouble frequently when he focuses too much on his investigations or when taking pictures

Backstory

Clay doesn't talk much about his past before moving to Dyrelaw. He currently works at the largest news station in the city, working as a journalist and photographer that focuses on crime and scandals. More recently he's been assigned to research and find scoops involving the increasing gang and mafia crime, particularly the increasing number of murders in the district. While snooping around the area, he constantly runs into Detective Jones and often gets on his nerves when he tries to photograph crime scenes, strangely enough usually before law enforcement can even reach them. Although Clay seems to find crime scenes at every turn like no one's business, he is willing to trade info with the grumpy detective for a more in depth story. Even though Jones is usually a jerk, Clay seems to enjoy encountering him and getting him worked up.

Trivia:

  • Clay’s original concept was a minor character who occasionally interacted with Tilia and Turul. He was meant to be a journalist who was trying to get a scoop on the underground fighting ring that they fought in, and Tilia was too dumb to realize it was probably a bad idea to be telling a journalist of all people about this secret fight club.
    • One of his key traits while he was still a minor character in the twins' narrative was that he was the first person to mention to Tilia that he found fanfiction about them online, which Tilia reads to Turul to annoy him, because he thinks it's gross and stupid.
    • Clay's general design and color scheme were mildly influenced by an app game I play where I have him as one of the many customizable avatars you can have. His name in the app is Barnibas (which is the name I later attached to Tilia and Turul's journalist friend, since he didn't have a name prior), and his theme was "yearbook staff" for a high school. Obviously a lot of adjustments were done, but the overall outfit style and color choices came from this app avatar.
    • His last name came randomly by asking my brother-in-law for a good last name to pair with the name Barnibas, and so it was Clay.
    • He was initially supposed to be a one-sided love interest with Tilia, but after creating Jones and working through their interactions I found them far more adorable together. And now they have an independent narrative from the original concept.
  • Clay's general appearance was roughly inspired by the avatar I use for an app game I play called Criminal Case. The resemblance is mostly apparent in hairstyle/color and the accessories I tend to cycle through, which include a camera and dog tags.
  • He has a lot of habitual mannerisms such as reaching for his camera around his neck even if he's not currently wearing it (which tends to only happen when at home) or sometimes attempting to adjust his glasses even when he's not wearing them. He rarely seems aware of them and may do the action multiple times within a short period of time without even realizing it's happening.
  • Clay doesn't have a whole lot of other hobbies/interests that don't involve writing or photography, and he rarely knows how to keep himself occupied if he doesn't have a story or theory to work on.
  • He loves dogs, and dogs always seem to love him and respond well to him.
    • As much as he'd love to have one, his current apartment doesn't allow pets, and he figures his job keeps him too busy to properly take care of a pet anyway.
  • His favorite sweets are chocolates and fruit flavored popsicles.
    • Clay usually freezes juice boxes at home and cuts them out to eat like popsicles instead of buying packaged ones.
  • Clay doesn't like coffee very much and is more likely to be seen drinking various fruit juices in the morning, or occasionally iced tea. His favorite drink is orange juice.
  • He loves grilled foods like burgers and hot dogs, which makes it easy to get food with Jones that they will both like.
    • However, his favorite style of food would be Chinese food, or at least the equivalent of Chinese styled food for his region since... China isn't on that planet.
  • Clay is embarrassingly inept at using chopsticks, although Jones is trying his best to teach him.
  • He has a habit of eating "bite-sized" foods by biting them in half so it will take two bites, no matter how small the food is. This means he'll always eat small foods like cheese cubes, grapes, or small chocolates rather slowly in half bites, since he doesn't like to eat them too fast to be savored.
    • His logic is that if you eat something delicious in one bite, it's already gone, but if you bite it in half, you have "more" to enjoy.
    • He's a rather slow eater in general if he's not rushing himself to stay on his work schedule. Don't expect him to finish a meal quickly if you take him out to lunch or dinner unless he has a deadline/schedule to keep to afterward.
  • He doesn't have a phobia, but he gets nervous around fire and tends to stay away from open flames. Having a candlelit dinner with him is a bad idea.
  • A little sensitive about the fact he can't really grow any facial hair, not because he wants any, but because he's been teased about being "baby-faced" on numerous occasions.
    • Despite his hair being brown, the rest of his body hair is relatively fair in color.
    • Clay has an odd fascination with Jones's much darker hair, particularly on his arms. Jones thinks he's a little weird for thinking it's anything interesting, but he doesn't really care enough than occasionally mildly poking fun at him for it.
  • Originally was going to be a Dyric Ela Demon Twiva, but I figured him being plain old Dyric would be fine.
  • Clay seems to be the type that loves gossip, but he honestly only is interested in gossip if he can research the truth behind the rumors rather than just speculating in an empty and meaningless manner.
  • He's mentioned that in his younger years he was always fascinated by murder mysteries, whether they be novels, tv shows, or documentaries. He doesn't keep up with them much anymore since his job has him more actively participating in the research and investigation instead.
    • Due to his interest in murder mysteries and investigations, he did take a few criminology classes in college, although he decided not to major in it and was drawn to journalism and photography instead.
    • During some of these criminology classes, he actually did some research on Detective Jones since he was a relevant investigator on several of the cases that Clay ended up writing papers or articles about for assignments. Clay was already familiar with Jones’s work and reputation before they even met in person, and Clay found his record rather impressive, especially since Jones was notable as being the youngest person to join Dyrelaw P.D. Jones had been on the force for about 3-4 years by the time Clay started researching him and his past and present cases.
    • Clay would admit he has enough knowledge about Jones’s past cases to be considered a nerdy fanboy of some sort, although it was mostly just because he liked reading about all the different murder cases Jones solved over the years.
  • Clay keeps a personal journal, along with keeping some professional journals to document his work progress. His personal journal tends to be rather minimal and is often in some kind of code so others won't absently happen across his personal musings.
  • As often as he takes pictures of other people, he really doesn't like it when his own picture is taken. He tends to be overly critical with how he looks in most pictures, but he gets a little more casual about it when he starts pestering Jones to be in selfies with him.
  • Clay has a habit of taking pictures of Jones from behind in some attempt to get a good shot of his butt. Clay claims he’s just trying to get a cool shot of him from behind where the framing is just right with his coat blowing back in the wind, but Jones is pretty sure Clay’s repeated frustration isn’t from not getting the framing perfect and is actually from the wind not blowing his coat up enough for Clay to evaluate his booty.
    • “Why is this folder full of pictures of my butt?” “I-It’s not! These are just... failed attempts of the cool behind the back windswept shot I’m trying to get!” “If they’re failed attempts, why don’t you just delete them?” “YOU CAN’T JUST DELETE THINGS LIKE THAT, THAT’S LIKE THROWING OUT EVIDENCE” “Evidence of what? Me regularly doing squats at the gym?” “...I didn’t know you went to the gym, when does that usually happen?” “Don’t take out your calendar.” “I’m... not, I’m just... taking some unrelated notes...”
  • Clay gets extremely flustered when flirted with. He doesn't handle overly forwardness very well and either ignores it entirely if he's working or he will clam up and potentially leave the situation if he's on his own time.
  • His favorite color is blue.
    • Not a fan of the color orange despite liking orange juice so much.
  • Has mild allergic reactions to certain plants.
  • Not a fan of birds.
  • He is very patient about getting the perfect shot, but more impatient when dealing with people.
  • Doesn't own a car, but he uses company cars when having to travel across the city for work. His personal vehicle for local travel and short errands is a moped if he doesn't use public transportation.
  • Later on, Jones teaches Clay to use a handgun for self defense. Clay doesn't particularly like the idea of using a gun, but he does keep a small handgun in his apartment after getting a gun license.
  • "A scoop waits for no man!"
    • or alternatively, "A scoop waits for no illnessACHOO"
  • His "least favorite laws" have to do with private property and trespassing, mostly because this tends to be the one he skirts with the most while trying to investigate for his articles.
  • Very ticklish, and he typically doesn't like having physical contact with anyone he doesn't know very well.
  • Not a fan of his landlord since he is pretty slow to have anything fixed around the complex. His landlord doesn’t really have any issues with him though, and Clay tries not to complain much since it’s hard to find affordable places to live in the city that is also close to his workplace.
