Backstory

Kasai was born hundreds of years ago, in a time when people still believed in the supernatural. He is a race of “yokai”, or spiritual beings of [mainly] Japanese origin. It was said that a magical “kirin”, a dragon-like unicorn creature, would appear before a newborn emperor to give their blessing to the new ruler. Kasai, along with several of his kin, were in charge of this important task. So, Kasai did this, year after year after year. He wizened up, but never once did he imagine that one day an emperor that he blessed would retaliate against him. This emperor became a burden on his people, ruthless and stone cold in manner. The lower class starved, the middle class shipped off to fight wars and taxed with barely enough left to support their families…even the rich were harassed to share their wealth. Kasai had to do something other than watch the Japanese society crumble under his hooves. Such was the dual nature of the kirin…one to bless, but also one to warn of foreboding circumstance. He approached the emperor, who did not take his advice to heart. Instead, he lashed out at the graceful beast, tarnishing the purity that had been his face with an ugly scar. For the first time, Kasai cursed the man. He swore never again to condemn one to such a fate. Over time, the number of yokai in Japan began to disappear. Emperors took a back seat to politics and society’s well-being, leaving Kasai out of a job. It was then that karma had a different plan in mind for the kirin, assigning him to a new role with even greater significance. Now the last of his kind in a rapidly-transforming world of technology, Kasai is a holy messenger, racing across Earth’s landscape to greet the dying and assess their souls. Everyone on Earth and all who have set foot upon it are subject to his judgement: should they be of pure heart, he puts in a word for the Big Man upstairs. If they are a cold-blooded murderer, however…he’ll make sure they wind up where they belong. Years of this fast-paced type of work has hardened his demeanor and after standing by the sides of thousands of people, he has truly seen every type of character and circumstance…or so he thinks.

Likes/Dislikes

He deeply cares for the natural world, the spirit world, and magic and he is scornful of the recent spread of technology. In his mind, scientific advancement has led to the death of ecosystems, disbelief in souls and the afterlife, and scrutiny toward the ‘’impossible’’ concept of magic. Despite this, he knows that the world will continue to change in favor of progress, and he has resigned himself to this fate with the hopes that perhaps one day science and religion can peacefully co-exist.

Strengths/Weaknesses

Kasai's otherworldly powers allow him to physically sense the intentions of others, so he is very good at reading people unless they are considered ‘’morally grey’’. He can communicate to both beast and human via telepathy as he cannot vocalize words. By using his whiskers to ''touch'' a person's soul within their body, he can see their life's story from conception to death and use this information to make a judgment on if they will pass to Heaven or Hell. However, he can only perform this ritual if the victim in question is dying or already dead as any other time would be very uncomfortable to the person on the receiving end as their ''story'' is not yet finished. Because many beings across the world die at the same time, Kasai is able to split his soul into multiple copies in order to visit them all, but each copy will be a weaker mirror of his original form until he is recombined. To ensure he does not miss the passing of a soul, he is able to run ten times faster than a bullet train. He leaves a trail of embers in his wake, yet does not burn anything his hooves touch and can even walk atop the surface of water. While he would like to return life to those who are dead, he has not been delegated that authority and has no means to make that happen, as he believes it is ''only in the hands of Kamisama'' to do so. He has a deep knowledge of the spirit realm and the soul and how it functions, but knows little of technology and how it works. Instead, he is quite adept at using magic, particularly that in the attunement of fire, and he is able to conjure powerful spells.
