Chess the cat is, well, a cat. She spends most of her time doing cat things, hanging out with her owner, lounging around, you know, just cat stuff.
But then one day, she ended up on the wrong side of the tracks, and ended up receiving a Heart, a gem-like object that replaced her actual heart and sits comfortably in the middle of her chest. Through the power of her Heart, she gained power over dreams and illusions. She can create powerful illusions, though ultimately they're just that- illusions. They can be terrifying, but ultimately they're completely harmless.
Her real power lies in her control over the domain of dreams. There, she is far more powerful, and can bend and shape the reality of the dream world as she sees fit. And there, damage done in the dream world directly translates to damage done in the real world. Additionally, though her power, she can keep people in the dream world indefinitely, though it's possible to break out of it with enough willpower and awareness of the fact that the world is indeed a dream. Though really, she only really uses this power for one purpose...
TW: Suicidal behavior, Death of a Loved One
...and that purpose is keeping her owner, Robert, in a coma. After the untimely death of a girl Robert was very close with and romantically interested in, he ended up living the life of a shut-in for a year, his grief warping into a crippling depression that only got worse as time went on. Eventually, after exhibiting near suicidal behavior (standing on the other edge of the fence of a 2nd story balcony with his shoes off, only to back out of it and go to bed), Chess felt the only way to keep him alive was to keep him happy, and the only way to do that in his current state was to use her newfound powers to keep him in a world where the girl he loved never died and he could spend the rest of his existence with her in a fantasy land where things never changed forever.
He was in a coma for a year without any real incident until one day, a group of other Heart users approach Chess and essentially blackmail her into working with them, lest they murder Robert's body in the real world. She is then forced to kill many political figures in power using her dream powers to assassinate them in their dreams, which is when she gets on the radar of our Main Characters...
When using her illusion powers in the real world, and always in the dream world, she takes the form of a bizarre, cat-rabbit hybrid looking thing. When not using them, though, she just looks like a normal cat, though one with a gem embedded into it's chest. Her collar's tag in this form does a decent job of covering the gem up, but it's still easily noticeable from any non-dead on angle.
