"Hi, friend! Do you want a snack cake?"

An ordinary box that had been stabbed repeatedly and filled with dead butterflies and an ominous note. If not for the intervention of one Arquen the Condemned, that would be the end of our story. However, in an attempt to get some information about what the hell was going on there, Arquen brought the box to life with a magical orb and subsequently couldn't bring himself to de-animate it once it expressed a childlike, cheerful personality.

Box-chan has since stuck by Arquen's side, their animation continued by Cenoir. This is despite the fact that Arquen is a big tough guy who works for Purple Satan in Purple Hell. Despite sticking out like a sore thumb, that hasn't stopped Box-chan from sticking around!

Personality

Despite its grim origins, Box-chan has a cheerful and innocent soul. There's a very childlike energy to Box-chan: they are blissfully ignorance of the harsh reality around them, very naive, wide-eyed and idealistic, imaginative, energetic, and remarkably resilient when redirected toward happier subjects.

Perhaps as a consequence of the nature of their "birth", Box-chan has an intense desire to help others. Box-chan carries around all sorts of goodies in their... self? to this end and is happy to give anything to anyone. Box-chan's caretakers have to watch over this habit carefully, as Box-chan doesn't understand the concept of people being untrustworthy or hostile.

As a simple box with feelings, Box-chan doesn't understand most concepts, really. Box-chan is thus highly inquisitive and asks lots of questions about what things are and why things happen even when it isn't an appropriate time and/or place to do so.

Activities Helping people, being alive, making people smile, ambling about, picking up random things off the ground, decorating.

Misc. People, animals, plants, bugs, inanimate objects, animated objects... everything, basically!

Dislikes

Edibles Box-chan is a little sad about not having a stomach... According to Miitopia for the Nintendo Switch, however, Box-chan would theoretically dislike gelatin, ham, mushrooms, and crunchy things. Honestly that's the shortlist Box-chan is really fuckin picky apparently
Weather Rain, because it makes Box-chan all soggy...

Physical Characteristics

Box-chan is a fairly standard cardboard box. I have some Amazon box sitting around that's 16x14.25x6.5 inches which feels... kinda right but still too big?? Still a little too big but I don't have the spatial awareness to understand how to make that closer to right. Somewhere between that and the size of a typical shoebox. Box-chan's flaps are always open, but Box-chan can close them up at will to protect any goods or fit into smaller spaces.

Then come the non-standard parts. First, let's start with what Box-chan was like before being animated, namely stabbed numerous times. Box-chan has a number of knife wounds across its body, though these do not cause Box-chan any pain and they sometimes even use the holes to fasten decorations! Box-chan initially was filled with an unnerving number of dead blue butterflies as well as a note saying I hope you're watching." Box-chan has since been emptied out and can now be filled with whatever they'd like, typically some combination of snacks, office tools, and first-aid supplies.

Finally, being animated has given Box-chan a cartoonishly simple face as well as some stick limbs, which serve to add a couple more inches to its height. Despite lacking visible fingers, Box-chan doesn't have too much trouble grabbing and holding things, though they struggle with anything requiring more dexterity than that.

Style

Box-chan does not wear clothing. Box-chan isn't opposed to wearing clothing, but who's out there making clothes for boxes...? Well, sometimes they use their "stab wounds" to hang decorations, as stated. One could also draw clothing on them with markers, but due to the fairly permanent nature of such a thing Arquen has a firm "no drawing utenstils around Box-chan" policy...

Body Language

Box-chan is incredibly emotive for a box and pushes its simple facial features to their absolute maximum. They bounce on their "heels" often, and when stressed will close up all of their flaps. It's trivial to tell how Box-chan is feeling at any given time just by giving them the slightest glance.

Scent

Like a cardboard box. Yeah. Naturally, though, anything they're carrying around might influence this and will linger in their box for some time depending on strength. You leave your McDonald's bag in them ONE time and now they'll make you hungry for at least a day afterward...

Voice

Absolutely adorable. Adding to the cuteness poisoning is that Box-chan's speech pattern is fairly simple and childlike, their vocabulary and syntax hovering around the kindergarten-1st grade level idk listen I'm not like a speech scientist

History

During a certain cycle of The Competition, a man known as Arquen the Condemned found himself stuck in the Test Reality. To give himself and his allies better odds during The Competition, Arquen was looking around Umbra's Mansion for any Oresses. After Arquen successfully found Cenoir - a teal Oress that imparts the user with control over inanimate objects, from psychometry to animation - he noted a conspicuous closet. Inside of this closet was a cardboard box that had been stabbed numerous times, filled with dead blue butterflies, and topped off with a note that read: "I hope you're watching."

The box had been left by a Manipulator named Verity. Verity was one of three Manipulators Opine had hired to help create and oversee the Test Reality and was well-noted for hating not only Opine, but all of Them in general. Increasingly frustrated by being dragged back into the Test Reality again and again and again because Opine could never be satisfied, Verity began venting her hostility in various ways. Knowing that Umbra was of particular interest of Opine, Verity decided to leave a "gift" in Umbra's house that served as a blatant threat against Opine, what with the stabbing and the corpse pile of Opine's signature symbol.

Arquen, however, had no fuckin idea what the hell was going on there and thus decided to use Cenoir to animate the box and get some answers. And so, Box-chan was born! After getting what answers Box-chan could offer, Arquen couldn't bring himself to rip life away from a being so innocent and decided to just leave Box-chan animated. Box-chan immediately took to following him around, even after Arquen had to murder a teenager in self-defense. For better or worse Opine canceled this iteration of the Competition not long afterward... but what would become of Box-chan?

The end of the Competition means that everyone Opine drags in gets to go back home, the Test Reality has its doors opened again, and the Oresses are returned to their original owners: the Oress Holders, who wielded them before the Test Reality got involved with the RPverse and are named after their respective Oress. This meant Arquen's access to Cenoir got cut off, rendering Box-chan inanimate again. Thankfully Cenoir - the Oress Holder - is both a friendly and cooperative fellow as well as someone with deep compassion for inanimate objects and instantly sensed the feelings that resonated inside of the box. He didn't hesitate to reanimate Box-chan again, and Box-chan quickly rejoined Arquen and has served as his loyal companion ever since.

...Much to the befuddlement and amusement of his peers, considering Arquen is basically part of a network of big tough evil villains who murder on the regular. Box-chan doesn't seem to mind, though, which is a testament to how good Arquen is at keeping Box-chan out of the line of fire.

RP History

Box-chan currently resides mostly in Maple Manor: the personal residence of Arquen's boss where he often stays between missions. Having recently opened its doors for a new set of maids, there were plenty of new faces to meet! Box-chan accompanied Arquen as he had an... unfortunate run-in with Dicro and Yval, fresh off of being attacked by basement monsters. As happens in Maple Manor. Thankfully the whole thing sort of went over Box-chan's head and the group headed over to the lounge afterward for some desperately-needed drinks, where Box-chan met a few more others. Here Dicro interrogated Arquen about Istra, and later spoke to Arquen and Box-chan privately on the roof about a certain suspicious figure he'd seen on the internet. This was all very important plot stuff, which needless to say also completely went over Box-chan's head. Box-chan then later met Thyx, whom Dicro was very worried about for reasons that completely went over Box-chan's head.

...You may be noticing something of a pattern here.

"Friendship is the strongest power of all!"

Box-chan has absolutely zero powers whatsoever. Box-chan lacks strength, intelligence, or notable defenses. Box-chan's only strategy in battle is to be nice and hope their enemies will become friends instead!

(Arquen keeps Box-chan far away from combat.)

Something to note is that Box-chan's continued existence is wholly reliant on the Cenoir Oress. If Cenoir himself or whoever else is wielding the Oress and keeping Box-chan alive at the time become incapacitated, Box-chan will be instantly rendered inanimate again. In this state Box-chan lacks any consciousness or sense of perception and is no longer a living being, so they do not incur any sort of distress from suddenly being helpless after experiencing life. If animated again with Cenoir Box-chan will immediately regain its previous identity and will have memories of the time it spent unanimated, albeit without much emotional attachment to them. It's somewhat like recalling a dream: you technically experienced it, but psychologically don't tend to feel like any of it really happened.

If Box-chan is destroyed, its lack of soul will render it permanently dead. The only way to resurrect a deceased object would be through time-reversing magic or Tested-brand healing. There are rumors that any object left animated by Cenoir for long enough will have accrued enough Soul Energy to develop its own soul, but it's unclear if Box-chan has qualified for such a thing or how much longer it would take assuming said rumors even have any merit.

Trivia

  • Box-chan was never intended to be an OC, but Exuro had the idea of animating the box to figure out who left it there and who was I to stop him??
  • "Box-chan" was an OOC moniker at the time of its creation. It's never actually been named in-universe and is never referred to in such a manner that one needs to use a name, so the "name" has just kind of stuck. It's entirely possible that Box-chan will get an actual name someday and I'll have to come back on a find and replace adventure!
  • In the Switch version of Miitopia, Box-chan was my Chef.

Entireties

This tab details what this OC is like in other Entireties, if applicable. An Entirety is sort of like an AU or alternate timeline, but not quite that since an Entirety can contain multiple of such things. On a meta-level an Entirety is a subforum where my friends and I roleplay with our OCs in a different context than the "main" Entirety (Ent1rety).

Box-chan currently only exists in Ent1rety. Due to Cenoir never having existed in En2rety and Al2rety, the only Entirety where a Box-chan equivalent could theoretically exist is in Altirety.
