Backstory

Max wasn't born in America, but for all intents and purposes, this is his home. He moved to the US when he was only three years old, along with his older brother, after their mother died and their father went to prison. They were adopted by their paternal uncle and his wife, who already had two daughters. To Max, they were essentially his parents, though there was no ignoring the fact that they were white and he was not. He stayed in the background most of his life as he watched his fiery older brother fight and rebel at every opportunity. They were very close, he and his brother—inseparable, even. But his brother left home abruptly one day, leaving Max behind. He was only nine and when he asked his aunt and uncle, they lied and said his brother abandoned them. Abandoned him. He was angry with his brother for years until they met up again and he explained the truth, that he'd been kicked out because of his sexuality. They've gradually begun to get to know each other again.

His transition began when he was fourteen, after questioning things for nearly three years. It was small, baby steps—a hair cut, new clothes, voice exercises in the privacy of his bedroom—but he eventually worked up the courage to socially transition at school. It went surprisingly well, aside from the few bullies he accrued as the news spread. He attempted to come out to his aunt and uncle, but their denial and quick rejection caused him to backtrack on his announcement. Four years later, a year of being on HRT and a few months after top surgery, and they still refuse to call him Max.
