Ellery is a high school math teacher whose life revolves around his students and his own two children. He wants to be as helpful as he can for his students and manages to make math engaging. He isn’t loud or a jokester, but his calm demeanor and honest care allows him to control a classroom just as well as a commanding and loud teacher. No, this doesn’t mean he doesn’t lose his temper or doesn’t get firm with his students, this just means that those situations are rare. Teachers always encounter students who actively work against them and those students either become close friends with him by the end of the year, or will be the ones to tell other students that he is the worst. Ellery’s even disapproval is not fun to endure. He is realistic is his observances, which can tear into people at times.
Otherwise, most people at school like Ellery. He happily hosts debate club and math lab after school and is always ready to meet with students during lunch to help them understand classwork. He gives thoughtful grades that reflect his knowledge of different learning styles and while he doesn’t grade softly, he also doesn’t grade harshly. Interacting with others, Ellery is pleasant and polite and encourages others to lead the conversation.
With his two kids, Ellery is a little looser. He has learned that his kids would prefer he show his emotions when he is stressed out or sad and they know the signs that he might need a little space or to be reminded to go to sleep. Ellery reciprocates this and works with his kids to tackle emotional, family, and school problems. They are a close family and while Ellery’s son Xavier tends to dominate the room, Ellery and his daughter, Valencia, are usually content with listening and laughing at Xavier’s jokes. Ellery had his two kids when he was 22 in a marriage that went too fast and ended in divorce. The kid’s mother elected to not be part of their life besides sending financial support. Neither child has met their mother, but Xavier has expressed some interest. The father and daughter are a little closer than Ellery and his son, and Xavier’s waves of personality may clash against Ellery’s calm river.
Currently, Xavier is in Ellery’s Pre-calculus class, which is a little awkward. Xavier is outgoing at home and Ellery has met his friends, but at school Xavier’s presence is very strong. Ellery doesn’t use his teacher tone at home with his kids and is nervous about trying to keep Xavier in line. He does his best, but he fears seeing discord between them at school carrying home. Ellery has considered requesting for Xavier to be switched into the other precalc class, but his pride in his work and his worry about making trouble for other staff members keeps him from doing this.
In his personal, non-family oriented life, Ellery enjoys reading, biking, learning new languages, and reading about math-focused philosophy and science fiction.
