Appearance Description: 5'4" with a small, but curvy build, Ian is petite and feminine, which would be great if he was actually female. With his large green eyes and soft, pale skin, he also tends to look younger than he actually is. Even though he attempts to bind himself with bandages and has cut his dirty blond hair short, he still can't stand looking at himself in the mirror - his whole body feels wrong. 

This is apparent in his timid, slouching posture. His style is generally straight cut button up shirts and loose pants - anything to hide his curves. Not wanting to draw attention to himself, he sticks to neutral tones and covers up as much as possible. His voice is another thing he hates about himself, much too high-pitched for his liking. He usually speaks very softly in an attempt to mask it.

Aesthetic Board

Ian has been hiding who he is his whole life. Ashamed. Always being proper. Seeking his family's approval. People pleaser. Even though he's improved in some ways, daring to be male in public, he's still worried about what his family thinks in the back of his mind. He was always forced to be a proper girl and is unused to his newfound freedom. 

Unlike his family, Ian is not a demon-hater, though he is slightly prejudiced against them from the way he was raised. He certainly doesn't think of anyone as less than him, and he is completely uninterested in magic himself. In fact, he is fascinated by non-magical "magic tricks" and illusion. He would've loved to learn sleight of hand but his parents had strongly disapproved. 

Still a very negative thinker, even with Sam split off from him, Ian is often depressed and just beat down, as well as permanently tired, listless, aching from the soul tear. He has no self-confidence, doesn't stand up for himself, agrees with negative talk, and generally puts other people on a pedestal. He's nearly asexual because he tends to idolize people he's attracted to - perfect untouchable statues. Basically, he's a doormat with a hard time saying no. On the plus side, he is patient and independent, able to take charge of a situation as long as he's not expected to lead others. 

Ian has no short-term memory and an inability to deal with change. He craves security both financial and emotional. He can appear steady, and stoic because even though he crumbles under stress, he keeps up his mask, and bottle up any emotions. Ian will brood over disagreements, but never voice his true feelings. On a more positive note, he is good at seeing the big picture, planning, thinking ahead, and looking to the future. 

Quietly artistic, Ian likes to work with his hands. He particularly enjoys carpentry and the design process - art that requires thought and planning. 

Passive Abilities: 

Telepathic link - can send/receive thoughts between him and Sam. 

Weaknesses: 

Will get sick and die if long away from ambient magic of Manta Carlos. 

Half of a whole - Bonded - must stay within 10 ft of Sam or gets nauseous, worsening with time. After 25' becomes painful cramps and spasms, worsening with time and distance, and eventually fatal (within 12 hours). The effects pass almost immediately when back in safe range. They get anxious if separated by a wall/door and can't see each other (ie in another room). If Sam dies, it's the same thing as being more than 25' apart, and it will be fatal unless his soul's halves can be reunited in that time. 

Half-souled - permanent weakness/tiredness. Sort of dull emotional ache. 

Biography: 

Ian was born to a small but wealthy family of mages living on Manta Carlos, the middle child of five kids and the only girl. Even though his family was magical, they were also very proud humans, most of them members and supporters of groups such as Citizens Against Evil (which Ian's father gave a great deal of his funds to). They also thought of non-magical humans as being lesser, which was why they stayed on an island brimming with undesirables. 

In spite of this, Ian did attend Starlight Academy along with his siblings, though only part-time, as all of them were instructed in magic by their parents or vetted tutors rather than the Academy's "inferior" teachers. Ian and his siblings were pushed hard and expected to succeed both academically and magically, very rarely praised and even then only in comparison, but harshly punished for any slip-ups. 

Ian's parents were distant and emotionally unavailable, though not overtly abusive for the most part. But Ian was often told he was a disappointment because he simply did not care about magic. He was also pressured into being a proper lady. He always felt uncomfortable with this, but couldn't say why. When he did finally realize he was a boy, somewhere around 6 or 7, he told his mother - that was the only time she ever hit him. After that, both of his parents were even harsher towards him, and his siblings mostly followed along. 

He tried being a girl. Tried everything. But it just stressed him even more. On top of that, his negative thoughts/imaginary friend had gained sentience at some point and was making things worse for him. His family being what they were, it was natural for him to think that maybe this whole thing was caused by demon possession. He couldn't bring himself to go to his parents for help with this, so he went to an older brother. Together they performed a modified exorcism ritual that ended up splitting his soul in half and transferring it and his sentient negative thoughts into a magical construct body. It took the ritual failing before he accepted that he couldn't change who he was no matter how much it upset his parents or how much he tried to convince himself he was female. 

When this happened, Ian was finished high school, but still living at home though he was a legal adult. He still didn't feel able to defy his family and was going to be going into business with them in spite of having no interest in magic and wanting to go to a normal college. 

After, there was a big argument with his family, and he ended up getting disowned and leaving Manta Carlos with Sam. This was when he finally got the nerve to cut his hair and change his name. He would've gone by Sam, but that felt too confusing given the circumstances. Unfortunately, they quickly sickened and were forced to return. Ian and Sam ended up signing up for college in a field they both enjoyed, and Ian was free to present himself as male for the first time. His older brother, feeling guilty, gave him some extra money, but he stayed at the school and started looking for a job anyway.

Ian's mana reserves have been stunted by the halving of his soul and are being redirected to sustaining Sam's body. While he may still be able to perform simple incantations out of a book, he has no interest in studying them, and the point is moot since Sam's feeding regularly drains him of what mana he has remaining.
