Personality
Aren is as calculating as she is chaotic. At a glance, it's impossible to tell which Aren you might engage with: the steady and cool sorceress who knows exactly which weaknesses to exploit to get what she wants, or the unrepetant warlock whose irratic nature makes her as dangerous as she is unpredictable.
It's really a toss up any given day.
Fortunutately, she's not one for making friends who might have to figure it out. For her, partnerships are a means of power. And while those wells all eventually run dry, Aren prides herself on never being caught off guard by betrayals, instead always being the first to betray such trusts. In a game of cults, artifacts, and demon gods, that's really the only way to stay alive.
Magic
A black bladed kukri capable of draining souls and power from its victims, Shayd serves as Aren's warlock patron and primary weapon.
Shayd is a sentient weapon of chaotic evil nature. It tempts with visions of grandeur and makes open threats equally to get what it wants from its warlock.
Though it should be a simbiotic relationship, there is often much tension between the kukri and its weilder. Though Shayd claims to hold all their shared power, Aren frequently reminds the blade that without her, it would still be imprisoned and useless.
Having completed an extended and bloody ritual to locate the blade, Aren is never out of reach. She stores the weapon inside herself, pressing the blade into her scarred arm for safe keeping and immediate access.
An extension of her magic affectionately called Shadow, the hound is a large dire shadow wolf. Once summoned, it will hunt its prey until it either succeeds or is destroyed.
Due to Shadow's existence being tied to Aren's, the hound reflects her own being and the magic that shapes it when summoned acts as a visual representation for Aren's mental state.
Trivia
- For an unknown reason, Aren cannot bleed. What wounds have drawn her blood have been life threatening.
- Due to sunlight sensitivity that's come from partnering with Shayd, Aren typically wears her hood up.
- There has never been a warlock more willing to sass her patron than Aren.
- Having been called the "Harbinger of Ruin" Aren notoriously laughed and replied with "Oh no, I am Ruin."
- Few can connect her crimes to her, though whispers of the dreaded Pale Lady have begun to spread through the Sea of Fallen Stars courtesy of the Swords of the Lady.
Biography
Having made a pact with Shayd, an ancient and dark sentient weapon forged in shadows of the abyss, Aren has been seeking power in the darkest of places. A natural caster of shadow magic, her pact with Shayd has given her even greater boons and purpose. Now with the blade at her side, she's travelling across the continents and the planes to dispatch their enemies, but Shayd has a greater plan in mind.
After stabbing Shayd into a well of divinity, an act which nearly destroyed them both, Aren officially earned the title Godslayer — a title she wants to cement in the histories. But with the divinity empowering Shayd, he revealed their pact was not by chance and that a demon by the name of Murmur sent her to him in hopes of releasing not only Shayd into the Material Plane, but Murmur as well. Together, they are now seeking to break the seals that hold the demon — and Tharizdun — back.
Or so she believes.
There are darker plans at work and her powers and body are not always her own. Touched by the darkest pit of the abyss, Aren is a pawn who thinks herself a queen, a delusion that may cost her when she moves to check a god.
Design
BUILD. Aren is very thin, to the point of almost looking sickly. However she carries herself with confidence and menace.
SKIN. Aren's skin is bone white little to no flush of life. As she rarely bleeds, it's even difficult for her skin to blush.
EYES. Entirely white, she has no visible iris or pupil.
TEETH. Her teeth are fiendish with canines that are particularly sharp.
HAIR. Short and black, her hair is always loose and often a little bit wild.
EARS. Pointed, almost like a half-elf.
TAIL. Thin and whiplike with a subtle spade tip, her tail is more emotive than she is.
SCAR. Down her left forearm is an ugly and jagged scar. When her magic is especially wild, it appears to glow beneath the scar.
TATTOOS. Around both of her biceps are bands of arcane black ink. The design is interlocking with matching diamonds on her outer arm.
SHAYD is a wickedly curved kukri with an obsidian blade. While it looks almost ornamental and ritualistic, it is a powerful weapon that Aren is never without. While not in use, Aren has the ability to meld it into her body, normaly doing so at the scarred point of her arm.
Aren is most often dressed in black leathers with an accent of the purple that she and her shadow magic favor. Her outfits are usually functional for an arcane thief. Due to her sunlight sensitivty, the long scarf she wears doubles as a hood.
For ritual purposes, she will often wear more dramatic gowns and cloaks provided for her by the cult. In these outfits there is always a chain motif, usually on her hips, down her back, or over one of her shoulders.
Relationships
The source of her power and her only partner, Shayd is one of the few things Aren trusts. And if she intends to kill a god, she needs the blade to do it. Even if she finds him insufferable — its a mutual feeling.
Zymun [ dead ]A strange void-touched aasimar, while they once shared similar interests, she soon realized they were unaligned. She took his crown and his life — though she suspects she's not through with him yet.
Hadara [ bitch ]Before Aren picked up the blade, the mantle had been worn by another woman, a daughter of Murmur himself. Aren has no qualms with putting her down for good if and when their paths cross.
Seer [ cultist ]Part of the Cult of Chains, Aren spared the Seer's life by granting the fallen shadar-kai new purpose. With the Crown of Horns stolen from Zirus on his head, the Seer can find Aren, and thus Shayd, anything.
