Evelyn used to be a very energetic and troublemaker as a kid, developing into a more negative and cold person.

About
Born in Shiganshina, Paradis, to Diantha Barton and Reed Thorburn, Evelyn is just a year older than Eren Yeager.
With a very energetic and adventurous personality, Evelyn was once a happy and extroverted kid full of life and dreams living with her parents inside the walls.
These dreams were cut short on the day the Wall Rose was invaded, such event was extremely traumatic and changed her forever, not only changing her way of perceiving life and the world but also turning her into a more negative and cold person.

During the evacuation, Evelyn had just been put aboard when four man came out of nowhere and pulled her parents back, dragging them away from the boat and into the crowd right in front of her eyes, she could only watch her parents disappearing into it and crying for her name, while she was one of the lucky ones who were able to get aboard, it was also the most traumatic moment of her life.
She can’t help but feel guilty for her parents death; maybe if they got aboard before her they would still be alive.
That guilt slowly started to feed on her mental health and at a certain point she started to be afraid of falling asleep because she kept reviving that moment in her dreams.

Evelyn has always been obsessed with the outside world and the Survey Corps and decided to volunteer along with Eren and the rest, at the beginning she was one of the worst but was able to show her value as the time passed by.
She never had much interaction with others of her own age before but eventually managed to get along with everyone and even bond with some, especially Sasha Blouse and Reiner Braun.
Most of the time she is seen around Sasha as she became a sister and a best friend to her.
Later on she starts to fall for Reiner but never had the courage to confess her feelings until the day she died to protect him.

She finally meets Levi and his special squad later on, she couldn’t describe the automatic déjà vu feeling she had the first time she saw him, but that feeling brought her something good, a sense of comfort and safety, it took her some time to realize why she was feeling like that, but she finally understood what was going on with her: She had met him before.
Back when she was just a kid, she used to be obsessed with titans; in fact, she never stopped being obsessed with them until the invasion took place.
She’d spend hours thinking and planning how she could get to the other side of the walls and that’s when the thought came to her mind: She would try to hide inside an exploration wagon.
Eventually for a kid that plan sounded amazing and in fact she was quite successful, managing to not be seen and achieving her goal.
Later that day, the wagon stopped to explore a certain area and that was when Evelyn decided it was the right time to get out while no one was watching the wagons.
She was quickly seen by a 4m titan who automatically ran in her direction, innocent and fearless, Evelyn didn’t try to run; instead she tried to touch the titan.
It all happened in a matter of seconds; the titan was killed right before grabbing her, she had just been saved by Levi himself.
Suddenly she remembered about that day and how her parents felt so embarrassed when Levi knocked on their door to return her, she never forgot the look on his face on the moment he saved her life.

Since that day, Evelyn started to idolize him and trying to catch his attention whenever she could, that’s what motivated her to get better at her training and improving her combat techniques, guaranteeing her with an A+ grade.
A few years later Levi finally noticed her and invited her to his special squad, to which she accepted right away.
When Reiner and Bertholdt confessed to be the armored and colossus titans, Evelyn's heart broke into a million pieces and it had a big effect on her brain chemistry, leaving her with yet another trauma; it messed her so much that she fell into a breakdown and was confined to a bed for three full weeks.
She knew she had to be strong, there was no time for rest, but for the first time she couldn't force her body to get up, something was dragging her down, making her feel completely useless.
Once the pain finally started to ease, hate and disgust took place and for a while her mood and feelings were very unstable.

Later on she finds out that her father, Reed Thorburn,was secretly sent with Grisha on his mission and that they were close friends.
After meeting and falling in love with Diantha, Reed decided he didn’t want to be part of the plan anymore and tried to just live a normal and relaxed life with his lover.
Unfortunately his dream life didn’t last long and the Reiss family found out about Reed during their encounter with Grisha at the chapel and once Rod Reiss got out of there alive, he commanded the murder of Reed and his wife.
Evelyn understood quickly that the four men who pulled and dragged her parents during the evacuation were sent by Rod Reiss and while it made her guilt cease, that feeling was now replaced with hate and a desire for revolution; blinded and clouded by her new feelings to the point of forgetting how Reiner and Bertholdt were also at fault, Evelyn decides to leave Paradis Island with Reiner and Zeke into an uncertain future.

Luckily for her, she was accepted thanks to Reiner’s influence, joining the Marleyean military training.
While she was able to get along with her new partners, she was never able to truly trust people again, constantly avoiding her own feelings.
As time passed by, Evelyn started to realize all the brainwash, especially towards the younger, especially disliking how they were getting inside Gabi's head, who she ended up caring a lot for unconsciously as she reminded her about her younger self, when she was still a kid full of expectations and when she last felt true happiness.
Tired of it, she tried to approach Reiner about it, resulting into a debate that ended with Reiner having a breakdown in her arms; she knew she shouldn't embrace him, but she did.

Eventually she started to realize that making decisions on impulse may not be the smartest thing to do; one year had passed and she was still treated as an outcast, even by who took her in.
Since when did she lost her rebellious spirit? Since when did she stop fighting? Had she lost the will to live that deeply? Was she afraid of punishment for the first time?
Evelyn tried her best to earn her place within the military but quickly she started to notice that no matter how well she'd do, they would never praise her hardwork, she knew the outside world, they'd never trust her completely and she was too old to brainwash.

She becomes very fond of Pieck, she was not only the first to welcome her when she was accepted by Marley, but also the only one who showed her some empathy, she finds her extremely intelligent and pleasant to be around which sometimes remembered her of Sasha, because of how opposite they are to each other.
Sasha was still a big part of her and all she could do was pray for her satefy and hope that her potato girl was still alive.
