Vance Eldridge

Childhood

Vance Eldridge was born the eldest son of a family of cobblers, though his clumsy hands (and head) clearly weren't meant for any occupation with precise detail work. As a kid he often did grunt work, gathering materials, carrying things out to market and doing odd jobs for acquantices he'd make in town. One day, a pack of wolves began attacking traveling merchants heading into town and Vance was called upon to defend his home. And he was good at it? Clearly untrained and unsure, but he impressed the captain of the local guard and was offered a chance to train with them. He took it greatfuly, although his family not so secretly wished he'd chose a safer life, his little sister knew how happy he was to finally find his calling.

Being a Guard

With the guard, Vance would learn anything that someone was willing to patiently teach him and then practice it until it stuck. Over the course of three years he learned every weapon that his fellow guards wielded and then bested them with it, but polearms always came the easiest to him. Thoughout this time, he grew close to his captian and while she occasionally trained with him, she refused to spar with him no matter how often he asked her. Once he had defeated the entire guard he went to demand a fight from her, but she beat him to it. She beat him solidly after a fifteen minute bout where he was woefully unprepared. She told him that he had much to learn still, but she cannot teach him anymore. She refers him to the Inabeth estate guard where he trains and works for another year before the cursed ranseur finds him and changes his life forever.
