Cameron comes across as being someone who is mean just for the sake of being mean, but really he just refuses to tell people that there's something bothering him. From a young age he was bullied for having long hair and not joining in with other boys when they talked about the girls they liked. Why? Because it wasn't the girls he liked. He knew from a very young age that boys were more his thing. After his big brother, Harvey, moved to Australia he was left with no one to confide his feelings to, and thus he began to get more and more closed off to those around him, including his own devoutly christian parents.
After one too many suspensions from school, he begged his parents to let him move overseas with his brother and start anew in the highschool he'd attended. After a lot of back-and-forth between Cameron, Harvey, and their parents he was finally allowed to pack up and move. After settling into the new school, a couple boys in particular caught his eye. He came to find out their names were Isaiah and Alistair, and they'd been best friends since childhood, so his hopes of getting 'in' with them began to fade. Around the same time the gossip about his sexuality started back up around him and he receded back into his shell and stopped talking to people and trying to make friends. By grade 12 the boys he liked had hooked up and he was left feeling like the only people he might ever like would hate him for intruding into their world.
