2049 was quite a year for the Swamp Dragons. After years of middling-at-best baseball in Prince George, the team had finally turned a corner. An exciting team of established veterans and home-grown youths fought together and captured Prince George’s third Canada Series trophy, and their first in 24 years (PG’s previous pennants were won in 2021 and 2025).

Rookie-of-the-Year infielder Kelyn Hoffe was in on the party, with this as his first taste of Prince George baseball, along with young stars like “Happy” Allen and Darrell Battle– but mostly fans were happy that PG all-time legends pitcher François “Slaughter” Smith and catcher Chris “Sparrow” Navarro finally won the rings they so deserved before retiring. And Yohann Richard, who had won two rings as a player, earned his third as the PG bench coach.

The finale of the series itself was greatly satisfying, a matchup between PG youth pitcher Thurman Rolston and ex-Swamp Dragon Ian “Dawg” Raynor, no doubt a future Hall of Famer, but an arrogant and selfish hotshot who left the team on bad terms and bounced around the league for the rest of his career. Prince George beat him to win the Commissioner’s Trophy in Game 6 with a 13-6 rout.
