First round drafts picks are nice, but I love the guys who are surprises– the 12th round draft picks, the rule 5 picks who excel on a new team, the waiver treasures– and like this guy, the unheralded international scout finds. On the other end of the age spectrum from Genge but equally delightful there’s Addy Schop, the five-tool beast tearing up my outfield alongside his center field equal Jaime Cruz and sending the opposing pitchers into fits. When he was drafted at age 16 out of Curaçao, we were taking a flyer on a boy who didn’t seem like he would be anything exceptional, and ten years later he’s just won his second consecutive league MVP in a year he hit 56 home runs.
