Personality
“Curiosity killed the cat, satisfaction brought it back” - those are words Yuri certainly knows (and hears) all too well. She is, by nature, a rather curious child, willing to poke her nose into anything she can come across before retreating quietly away, perfectly content with whatever knowledge she has gained from her (mis)adventures. This ranges from learning about the best ways to preserve cadavers (gleaned from the ranting mortician that was employed by all the communities dotting the side of the mountain she calls home) to finding out the mayor had a second wife the village over (which became a huge scandal after a rather young Yuri told her father when prompted about her day). On occasion Yuri gets in trouble from her ill-gained insights, especially when she gets caught snooping, but she’ll take her punishment as stoically as possible (which means not at all). Yuri is, however, popular with her age group because she’s free with information that the adults often try to hide from the children. It certainly also helps that she’s nice and pleasant, and unlikely to tell anyone of authority if she gets heckled. Not like that happens since her big brother has made it clear over the years that he was the only one to harass her.
Yuri’s parents instilled a industrious nature into her and her older brother. To the Kalvelis siblings, anything worth doing is worth doing right, and anything worth having is more than worth the fight to get. Perhaps other children would rather take time off while their parents visit friends, but Yuri fastidiously continues whatever work she is given - be it learning a new spell or potion or finishing her letters and everything else in between.
Physical
So, when I first designed and started playing Yuri, I was using Shuichi Nitori from Hourou Musuko for her appearance. That’s probably shaped a lot about how I’ve always viewed Yuri in my head. Anyways, I’ve always seen Yuri as kind of lanky, but not tall. Her hair is like a dark blonde, nearly brown and normally cut in something that is cute but short and would look okay on a boy as well. She often styles it with hairbands and barrettes, but not hair bows. She really likes cute dresses, but has no problem with cute male clothes as well (especially since she has to keep some in case her parents or brother suddenly shows up!) I just… always imagined her as a loli/shota that’s absolutely adorbs okay?
Just as a mockup, here’s maybe what Yuri looks like
currently using magic to delay puberty and all its awkward changes
Backstory
Twenty years ago, great sickness plagued the village of Hasslacher and had it not been for a witch who had stopped by during a journey, the whole settlement would have surely perished. The witch from across the sea quite quickly did her best to help the town earning both great admiration and the love of her life. And that is how the foreign witch Yukiko became the wife of the most well known blacksmith in the village and gave birth to two darling little boys.
Only, one of those little boys was Yuri and she really wasn’t a boy. Not really. Not in the ways that really mattered. It was apparent from a fairly early age - although Yuri enjoyed working in the forges and furnaces and kilns and felt right at home among the fires but cared little for the rough housing and playing the other boys engaged in, preferring to talk to herself on the footpaths of the mountains or playing with the girls her age. She got on better with the girls who preferred to take the time not learning or helping their parents to play with dolls or plait each others hair. Yuri was, she’ll admit, rather bad at that but had an eye on which of their mothers’ scarves would look best draped around their shoulders as they played. The townsfolk all called Yuri a peculiar and effeminate boy and hoped she would soon grow out of the phase (for it was a phase, of course due to the fact that the other boys were all older and larger than her or many years younger), and it took quite the bit of will for Yuri to bite her tongue and stop from informing them she was a girl and was perfectly fine the way she was, thank you very much. Later, when Yuri showed signs of magic, the townspeople stopped blaming her femininity on age gaps, but on the power being from her mother.
Not like it was a lot of power either. Yuri’s mama had resigned herself to not passing on her knowledge to her sons, as neither showed much promise when they were little, well before she saw Yuri’s magic. Her magic was subtle, not the grand gestures or potions of healing, or easy grasp of flight (which Yukiko would drill into her offspring with a fervor, lest the child kill herself if she fell off a broom near home), or even animating her play toys. No, Yuri’s magic manifested as an ability to talk to rocks. They didn’t quite speak back, but they hummed and they sang, giving up the secrets of their powers and what they could do when working together. Yukiko hadn’t even noticed until a seven year old Yuri came home one day holding up a leucistic snake and asking if it was normal for a snake to say asking a crag directions to a waterfall was odd. And after getting the question repeated a couple of times, things started to finally click.
Her uncanny ability to find rare crystals out of nowhere, or find her missing friends when they strayed too far in the mines… Suddenly it all made sense now. Honestly, it was so obvious in hindsight that Yukiko wanted to kick herself for missing it until it was almost too late. She was quickly pulling Yuri out of her shifts in the mines (which Yuri enjoyed why did you have to go and take it away mama?) and started to teach her all about magic. Such one on one attention was the talk of the town and the envy of her peers until they realized just how much extra reading Yuri had to do; after that, her age mates were properly cowed and supportive whenever Yuri burst into tears at the cursive script of the many grimoires Yukiko had found on her travels before settling down. Yuri hated reading with a passion - it was slow and painful and she knew already that she learned best by doing it herself or being told how to do it verbally. Some of the books did have extensive sections on gems though, and those are the ones she pursued most.
The next six years passed by much the same way - practice flying, learn magic, work with her older brother Kubo and their father in the kilns, and pretend it doesn’t feel weird whenever someone calls her a young man or a fine wizard. Although upset that now was the time that she would be leaving (the harvest festival is in two weeks and Yuri’s going to miss seeing the dress she helped make for Dalia, and her and Kubo dance!), it is also the chance to live somewhere that wouldn’t know Yuri, the second Kalvelis boy, but rather Yuri, the witch in training! Yuri has already decided to be who she is during her year away from home. She’s going to wear dresses like she’s always wanted, and go to parties and maybe dance and just be herself. In Hasslacher, she couldn’t do that without utterly disappointing pretty much everyone. But her year’s journey will be her chance! And she knows just where to do it - someplace by the sea with plenty of boutiques!

• ⟨specialty⟩ Metallurgy is Yuri’s major power - she can manipulate metal, extract it from minerals and shape it to her needs. She uses this to create jewelry and accessories inlaid with gemstones and crystals to produce certain types of energies to help the wearer. Yuri’s affinity with the earth allows her to ‘feel out’ the land around her, which allows her to find deposits of rocks and minerals, as well as easily define them. This is through her empathy with rocks. Yuri is also fairly adept at flying, if only because her mother trained her in it extensively, but would rather walk or climb, if she was being honest.
