About
He comes from a large family which prizes magic and knowledge very highly. His family is well known in Laawan, and many of his predecessors work directly for the king, either by being advisers or working in the scholar’s department, and the rest lecture in the main university in the imperial city. About half the people born into the lineage have the ability to shapeshift (those with minds strong enough to bring about and maintain the transformation).
Jid was expected to follow his father’s path and work in the scholar’s department, gathering intelligence and formulating magic-related policies, but he could no longer do that. He had always made his parents proud, but when he found out his magic was lost, he stole out of the house, leaving just a note to explain his side quest. His family is unaware of his loss of magic. Some think him eccentric; others think him brave and adventurous.
Currently he has made it fairly far from the main city and towards the fringe of the largest desert in Laawan. Rumours in towns have steered him in this direction; across the desert and towards the coast the climate gets more tropical. He has heard that in these towns he might find the mage who stole his magic. (Spoiler alert: The mage who stole his magic used ancient dark magic to steal the powers of innately-strong mages. However, it requires a sacrifice of part of his body so he is blind in an eye).
Personality
Usually quite soft-spoken and keeps to himself. He’s very intellectual, preferring to engage in conversations with like-minded individuals. He has a low threshold for stupidity and ignorance but doesn’t show it because he has learnt that showing respect to everyone reaps only benefits. After all, judging a book by its cover is never wise.
Appearance
Jid is dark-skinned, with black hair. His eyes are purple, which is a common trait of people from mage lineages. He usually dresses in exquisite and richly coloured clothing, but when traveling he covers this up with a simple but sturdy hooded cape (also good for the terrain which consists mostly of deserts). He usually has a simple cloth bag slung over his shoulder carrying his essentials (some clothes, money, food) while he’s on the move, but most importantly, a ruby book in which he has started compiling spells lost to the world or tucked away in hidden villages. He also carries a staff with him, which acts as a conduit for his magic if needed, or just to fight with if he gets into a rough situation (more so the latter, since his magic was lost)
Abilities
Back when he still had his powers, Jid was considered one of the most prodigious in his large family. He was held as the prime example to follow, and he gained both admiration and resentment for that. Hand-to-hand combat was not a strong suit, but since he lost his magic, that has become a focus for him. Since he set out, he has gotten stronger, physically, and is somewhat confident about his combat abilities. Cai has a wealth of experience with staves so he’s been training Jid too.
