Slasher is a young teenage dragon from the Dragon Lands of Equestria. Raised in the typical dragon society, Slasher was raised to be crude, annoying, and generally unwelcome towards ponies. However, Slasher never felt comfortable being like a "typical" dragon, preferring to be a kind friend to all (and avoided most conflict because of his cowardly nature), and as a result is not in the highest ranks among the other dragons. Even his mother, the leader of the dragon camp, finds herself constantly disappointed in her child.

Slasher has a fascination with ponies, entranced by their cooperation and views on friendship. And after a nasty incident with his dragon peers, Slasher decides to run away and find a place that will accept him and, with enough luck, be his friend. Only problem is dragons are seen as scary brutes to most ponies, but Slasher sets out with high hopes.

Eventually Slasher, while resting beside a river, encounters an earth pony named Rainy Meadows. Rainy has a fascination with dragons, drawn to their rough-and-tumble attitudes and intimidating appearances. Sympathetic of Slasher's situation, she offers to be his friend, saying she might be able to help him. Slasher accepts Rainy's offer and is prepared to do anything to get in good graces with the other ponies.

Rainy frequents a potion seller in the woods that experiments with strange magical spells, and has been bragging about a transformative illusion spell based on Changeling magic they were preparing to test. Rainy steals the potion and brings it back to Slasher. The potion, claiming to change the appearance of the user, is given to Slasher. And as promised, the potion changes his appearance from a dragon to that of a pegasus. Thrilled to be able to mingle with ponies, Slasher wants to go to town, but Rainy gives him some rules first. The potion is only temporary and wears off after 12 hours, so he can only look like a pony during the day. And he needed a new name since Slasher would raise some eyebrows. He remembers a nickname he was given by his dragon peers and chooses to go by Snowflake.

From there, Rainy escorts her new friend Snowflake around town. Snowflake does his best to blend in, but is still a dragon with little experience interacting with ponies, so can come across as a little awkward. Nonetheless, his kind natures comes through and makes friends with others, including a moody punk unicorn and a brash sporty pegasus. But despite being known around town as the friendly pony, Rainy is the only one who knows him as the friendly dragon.
