Sirmiq Senungetuk is a cheery and well-mannered young teenager hailing from Canada after moving to America.

Sirmiq was raised in Manitoba, Canada for all of his life, barring his birth. He was adopted as an infant and from Nunavut originally, and is Inuit in race and heritage. The village he grew up in in Manitoba is rather isolated and along the shores of Hudson Bay, so it is known mostly as a fishing town. Sirmiq never saw much in the form of outside entertainment including movies or television, living a very humble life helping with chores and developing an interest in medicine like his father. The only exception would be in the form of a CD Sirmiq bought from a traveler, which would captivate him to the world of heavy metal.

One day, his local school would announce that a high school in America would be partnering with them for a special exchange program that would send a student from their class to live in America and study abroad as part of an effort to enrich rural Canadian towns. Sirmiq is too nervous at first, but after recalling his longing for change and a want to see the world, he signs up for the program, much to his parent's worry.

Sirmiq says goodbye to his village and his family and is taken to a small town in Colorado where he will be staying with a host family, a nice couple and their daughter who love fishing, grilling, and football. Sirmiq is enrolled in the local high school and, while excited to see the radical change in culture, is also nervous about fitting in. He's so used to living in an isolated village that so much is alien to him, from language to customs to pop culture. However, he is ecstatic to finally be able to indulge in his love for metal music with other kids that like it, since he had to keep his love for it a secret back home.

But one thing Sirmiq still lacks is friends. He gets along well with his host family and their daughter, but is still the target of bullying and hazing from other kids. But on the edge of town is an expansive forest, which Sirmiq has made a habit of visiting.

One night, Sirmiq sneaks out of his host family's home to take a walk in the woods while it is quiet. The sky is crystal clear and the stars are brilliant.........too brilliant. One of them seems to fall from the sky and land in a clearing not too far from where Sirmiq is walking and he rushes over to investigate. This is where he meets Riiani.

After a series of misadventures, Sirmiq agrees to keep Riiani's identity a secret, and in exchange Riiani teaches Sirmiq how to be brave and adventurous. Sirmiq never imagined this is how he'd find a friend, but he is grateful for it nonetheless.
