Rien Motet

Appearance and Personality

Rien is a scrawny little mage who never stood out in a crowd. His disheveled brown hair, long white robes, and unimposing figure never did much to differentiate him from the crowds of stressed-out magi-in-training in the city of Nocturna. Perhaps the intricate pattern of scars and tattoos beneath his clothing would have done the trick, but only if the “trick” happened to be getting him branded as a heretic. Bummer. It’s certainly not as big of a deal now that he’s willingly run away with enemies of the state and moved into some lighthouse in a garbage port town populated by deer people.

Rien is beyond caring about anything. Mortality means nothing to him, the deadly situation brewing in his home city does nothing to faze him… perhaps the only thing he cares about is ensuring that he doesn’t anger his friends and allies too much. He’s apathetic, but certainly not heartless!!
While most of his companions tend to appreciate a solid plan, Rien is quick-thinking and impulsive, preferring to risk his life before anyone else can. It usually ends in his death, which really doesn’t matter to him – he is immortal, after all!

His inability to die has left him with a morbid curiosity as to what his body can go through before it finally gives in and refuses to regenerate. His masochistic thirst for knowledge about his own condition has often led him into the arms of… interesting company.

Powers and Abilities

While all humans on his planet are primarily beings of the soul, their bodily functions and physical state primarily regulated by the magical force of Anima that flows through their bodies, Rien is different in that his Anima is “unlocked”; Most humans, while more resilient than their Earth counterparts, still have to worry about their biological functions in order to survive – eating, sleeping, bathing, that kind of thing – but the flow of Rien’s soul was artificially increased through a number of painful experiments and rituals during his childhood. This has left his body as nothing but a shell, which can be endlessly maintained so long as his anima flows. He can reconstruct and repair himself from any sort of injury, no matter how grave, although the more serious the injury is, the longer it will take him to recover.

Most Nocturnan magi use their anima to alter the physical world around them, performing the miracles of magic by conjuring elemental or spiritual forces. Rien, on the other hand, can manifest his soul itself into physical form. This usually takes the form of “strings” or “wires” projected from his fingertips. Alone, these wires can act as razor-sharp whips, strong binds, or even woven barriers. However, they also possess the ability to enter the soul of anything they pierce, granting Rien the ability to attack an enemy’s anima (or similar source of power) directly – even allowing him to possess and control the weak or willing. When Rien uses another as his puppet, he can control their body and wield their power as though it were his own, although his own body will be left vulnerable.

Despite his formidable power and apparent invincibility, Rien is physically lacking and very easy to incapacitate, should anyone make it past his defenses. The strength of his soul has left his body frail on its own, so he’s easily reduced to a writhing husk on the ground… not that he really minds. He still requires his body to move and cast magic, so if it is out of commission, his soul is unable to do anything but attempt to regenerate his body over time.

his mom did stuff and now he's a weird soul thing. he ran away with a skeleton pirate and is now dating a bee. he's now spending his time helping his furry trash friend overthrow the government and getting kinkshamed by everyone ever.
